4. Digital painting
• The first thing I did was cut out Ruel and copy by layer, then I changed
some of the image settings of the new layer with only Ruel no background.
Once I did that, I used the smudge tool to smooth out his skin and hair.
Next, I used the pen tool to colour over his face and add highlights to his
hair, colour matching as I went along to make the picture look drawn.
Then I colour matched the album cover this was a promo picture for and
used those colours to make the background.
• Reflection - I love how it can turn a normal photo into something that
looks like a drawing without having to draw the whole thing from scratch. I
also think this is quite a unique effect that isn't seen very much especially
in album art. I don’t like how this effect is likely only going to be affective
and useable if the album art is just going to be a person's face on its own,
there can't be to many small details.

6. Glitch effect
• The first thing I did was make the picture black and white then make a
copy of the picture. Then I turned off the red channel in the blending
options of the copy and moved the picture to the left. Then I used the
marque tool to move different sections to the left and right making the
image look glitched, I then did all of that to the text to get the same effect.
I also put a purple/pink ombre over the top to add some more colour to
the picture.
• Reflections - I like this effect because of the distorted look it has which I
think would fit really well with the aesthetics of the album cover. Glitch
effects or similar effects are quite commonly used for album art but
not for much alternative music. I don’t like how different the colours of
the final picture look compared to the original picture, the
picture turning purplish wouldn't fit the colour scheme I have planned.

9. Photo manipulation
• The first thing I did was change the colour of the top hat from black/grey to
red/green using the 3D material drop tool. Then I cut out the path and field from
the rest of their pictures, I also adjusted the colours of the field to make it more
purple. Next, I put the field on the image of the sky, blended them together then
added the path and blended that. Then I put the hat on, and I had to add shadows
and change the direction the light hit the hat, I found this step slightly tricky as I
had no tutorial to learn from, I just used a few random tools till I liked how it
looked. The last thing I did was add the bee on and blend it in till it looked like it
was part of the picture and trying to pick up the hat.
• Reflection - I like how I can easily make abstract art/images by
using multiple pictures layered instead of having to take a picture with everything
in at the same time. I also love how there is no limitations to the kind of
pictures you can make, and I can put some of my other photoshop skills to use.
I don’t like how some of the images don't blend as easily as the others so you can
kind of tell its multiple pictures put together.

12. Turbulent displace
• Once I imported the video, I put on the turbulent
displace video effect to get the video to look wiggly,
then I changed the offset levels till it got to a point I
was happy with.
• Reflection - I like how the waves make it look li it’s a
trippy point of view. Effects similar to this are
used quite frequently in music videos. I don't
like that the effect means you can't really see what is
going on in the video very well.

15. Lens distortion
• Once I imported the video, I put on the lens
distortion video effect to make the video have a kind
of like a fisheye effect. Next, I changed the curvature
levels to -71 this made the video curve out instead of
in.
• Reflection - I love how this effect makes it look
like you are the one experiencing what is
happening like it is your point of view. I don't like
how warped and blurry the edges of the footage
look with this filter on it.

18. Paint bucket
• I imported the video then put on the paint bucket
effect, then I changed the colour of the paint to
black. Once I did that, I moved the fill point to where
I wanted it to be then I changed the opacity to 64%
and the stroke type to choke.
• Reflection - I love how this effect highlights the areas
you choose, and you can change the highlight colour
and the fill/stroke type to suit whatever footage
you're editing. I don't like how it ends up making the
entire video quite dark.
19. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
– I like the digital drawing effect for the album cover because it
gives a unique effect that you don’t see much, I also like that it
does look like a drawing without actually having to be able to
draw.
– I do really like the glitch effect so I think I might miss out the
ombre layer step so that the image stays similar sort of
colours it started out as.
– I liked the lens distortion effect because it’s a cool effect to use
for the POV of the actress in the video
– I like the distorted look the paint bucket effect gave; I think this
would fit really well with the creepy vibes I am wanting
to portray in the video.
