Everyone loves a hot, sunny day, but when it comes time to keep your home cool, you don't want to have to dig too deep into your wallet. And, while a nice thunderstorm can be quite soothing, you still don't want the wind and rain to cause a roof leak. For these reasons, your roof is not an aspect of your home you want to skimp on. It's responsible for helping you regulate the temperature of your home without forcing your appliances to work overtime. It's responsible for keeping you and your belongings dry and out of harm's way. In order for your roof to achieve everything you want it to achieve, you have to have two things in mind: efficiency and durability. In states like Hawaii, where the sun shines brightly and the rain comes down hard, there are two popular and eco-friendly roofing materials: cool roof asphalt shingles, and cool roof silicone roof coating.

These shingles by the Landmark Solaris Collection are perfect for any climate in which the summer months are incredibly warm because they provide a reflective barrier between your home and the sun. Here are some of the benefits:  The shingles reflect solar energy, preventing your home from getting too warm and therefore lowering energy consumption from cooling appliances.  They provide a roof surface that achieves up to 40% solar reflectivity, which is by far the highest in the asphalt roofing industry.  They are a standard solar reflective roof surface as defined by ENERGY STAR®, but can reduce the cooling load two times more effectively than a normal ENERGY STAR® rated roof.  Potentially double your energy savings from installing a solar reflective roof!  Solaris shingles may qualify for credits/points in LEED, NAHB, and other green programs.  While cool roof coatings only come in white, Solaris shingles come in a wide range of colors to meet your aesthetic.

A five-gallon pail contains enough coating for 250 square feet of roof space. Once it's applied, you'll never have to coat your roof again. Here's what you do:  Remove all loose material and debris from your roof. Pressure wash the roof with alkaline soap.  Wait until the surface is completely dry.  Caulk holes and cracks with silicone caulk and allow it to dry as per manufacturer's instructions.  Bridge openings in seams, cracks, skylights, drains, scuppers, et cetera with Gaco RoofTape.  Using a power drill and a paint mixer attachment, stir GacoRoof coating thoroughly for 3-5 minutes. Do not use a paint shaker.  Use a solvent-resistant ¾" or 1" nap roller to apply one gallon of GacoRoof per 100 square feet of roof. Allow the first coat to dry until it can be walked on – this will take anywhere from 1 to 12 hours.  Apply the second coat at one gallon per 100 square feet and allow to dry again.
