4. Video conference
Video conferencing systems are used in both clinical and administrative somatic and psychiatric
departments. By using video conference as a strategic resource time is saved on transportation and
resources are used more effectively across the region.
Video conference in the Region of Southern Denmark is used for a variety of tasks:
- Meetings between colleagues from different hospital units and with people outside of the region.
- Video interpretation - foreign language interpretation via video
- Discharge consultations between hospitals and municipalities/special units
- Medical conferences between hospitals to coordinate joint treatment
efforts in specialized patient treatment plans
- Remote education sessions
5. Patient Briefcase
The Patient Briefcase was developed to facilitate telemedical monitoring and follow-up on COPD patients
who have been discharged from the hospital after an acute admission.
The patient briefcase used in treatment of COPD patients is included in various activities:
- It is a part of the European RENEWING HeALTH project.
- It is the basis of a clinical PhD project which will start to present its results in late 2013.
- It is included in a COPD physical rehabilitation project, where the effects of doing rehabilitation via
the briefcase for this group of patients is tested. In 2014 a PhD project on this service will be initiated.
- A pilot project using the briefcase for new parents opting for early discharge was carried
out in spring 2013.
The patient briefcase solution was developed and piloted for COPD patients from
2007 to 2009 as a part of the EU-project Better Breathing. The briefcase was developed
and is now provided by the Danish company Medisat.
6. Teleconsultation for Diabetic Foot Ulcers
Teleconsultations replace consultation visits with controls in the home of the patient.
Patients save time and effort on transport to and from the hospital.
Wound specialists can guide the municipal nurse in the treatment of the individual patient - no
matter where the doctor is located.
7. 3D Photo Optic Camera
The 3D photo optic camera provides a much more efficient and precise method for
diagnosis and treatment of foot ulcers.
The 3D camera provides exact measurements of high quality, and is a quick and
innovative method for determining area and volume of a foot ulcer.
For that reason the 3D camera has the potential to greatly improve the field of diabetic
ulcer treatment.
8. Sustains
SUSTAINS is a European project that aims at introducing secure online access to health data
for Europeans. A total of 16 European regions from 11 countries are participating in the project.
OUH will strengthen the dialogue between patient and hospital by giving patients access to
adding information to their own electronic patient record.
9. ePatch
In cooperation with DELTA Microelectronics, OUH has developed a wireless, electronic patch
that makes it possible to carry out safe home monitoring of patients with arrhythmia.
10. Health Games
The idea behind Health Games is Serious Gaming, i.e. games that can be used for something
other than entertainment.
Serious Games as a concept covers games for learning, improving quality of life, solving
health issues etc. In the hospital, game technology can furthermore be used for diagnostics,
rehabilitation, information, learning and care.
The Health Games-project is a collaboration between organizations with clinical skills and
companies with experience in IT and gaming software.
11. Nerve Centre
In a busy hospital it can be difficult to maintain a clear view of available resources,
tasks and task flow in the department. As a consequence, it is difficult for the
coordinator to prioritize incoming tasks and allocate the right staff to the right task.

12. SmartCare
SmartCare focuses on integrated care delivery. More than 20 European regions and over
40 partners participate in SmartCare.
The Region of Southern Denmark is contributing to the SmartCare project with its Shared
Cared platform that ensures a standardised treatment plan for a specific patient group.
The Shared Care platform ensures a cross-sectorial collaboration between the
municipality, the general practitioners and the hospital.
13. Projects focused on gathering evidence & sharing experience
RENEWING HeALTH:
RENEWING HeALTH is a European health project, with the goal of supporting a broad European cooperation at regional level within
the field of telemedicine. The project aims to evaluate mature solutions in a real-life clinical environment, and create a large
knowledge-base to assist decision-makers. The project carries out scientific studies to investigate the effects of telemedicine, which
will all be evaluated based on a common evaluation model – MAST (Model for Assessment of Telemedicine). Close to 8000 patients
are included in the project; distributed among three main chronic patient groups: COPD, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
United4Health:
The aim of the United4Health project is to increase the use of telehealth in Europe by deploying telehealth services at a large scale
and adapting the services into routine care.
Additionally, United4Health will "validate and strengthen the evidence for chronic disease management by telehealth solutions,
especially on effectiveness, cost-efficiency and transferability of the implementation of the services" by producing high quality
evaluations of telemedicine services across Europe.
Momentum:
The Momentum Thematic Network is a platform across which the key European players share their knowledge and experience in
deploying telemedicine services into routine care with the goal to build a body of good practice.
The Momentum partners will work together to define a Blueprint that validates a consolidated set of methods supporting the
telemedicine service implementation process.
COLLIN – COLLaboration for Innovation:
For a number of years OUH has had a close collaboration on projects with the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel,
Germany (UKSH), and this relation has now resulted in the project COLLIN that aims at transforming the project collaboration to a
long-term partnership and strong network.
14. Patient@Home:
Patient@Home is the largest welfare technological research- and innovation project in Denmark, focusing on new technologies and
services – particularly for rehabilitation and monitoring in the Danish health care sector.
The Patient@Home project is expected to develop 40 new products but for OUH the project will focus on testing well-known
services and technologies in new settings and gathering evidence of effects.
"Baby briefcase" for maternity parents
In a pilot project new parents are offered to be discharged quickly after birth and take home a Patient Briefcase to offer more
security. Through the briefcase they can make video-contact with staff at the hospital as needed.
Monitoring of cardiac patients with the ePatch
The possibility to move patients to their own home for monitoring of heart rhythm will be investigated through studies and tests with
by the already developed technology ePatch that measures cardiac data and sends it to the hospital through a portable receiver.
Sensors for diagnosing diabetic foot ulcers
The project "Diabetic foot ulcers" explores new sensor-technologies that give staff very precise tools to diagnose foot ulcers and
ensure targeted treatment. The project will develop sensors for measuring of temperature, pH, oxygenation, mucus, etc. in diabetic
foot ulcers. The development of the sensors is based on and combined with an already developed prototype of a handheld 3D
optical camera for precise wound imaging and measuring that is currently being tested at OUH.
Implementation of telemedical discharge conference
When a patient is discharged from hospital, the municipality and hospital must cooperate to create a continuum, so that citizens are
ensured the best possible quality in the transition from hospital to home. OUH is thus implementing telemedical discharge
conferences in collaboration with a number of municipalities to facilitate a smoother transition.
