The document summarizes research conducted on existing video games and films including New Super Mario Bros 2, Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Force Awakens film, Star Wars: Rogue One film, and Star Wars: A New Hope film. Key findings from the research include that the products commonly include music, sound effects, dialogue, animations, and utilize color schemes and fonts. Aspects that will be incorporated into the author's own work include sound effects, music, dialogue, and animations like explosions.
2. Existing Product New Super Mario
Bros 2
Music
The music is very catchy throughout, but changes on every level. In most levels it doesn’t sound heavy, but in some it does because of the setting (e.g Castle).
It’s easy to remember as when people hear it, they know what game it is.
Sound effects
The sound effects sound very uplifting and realistic. They don’t sound miserable unless the character dies. When you collect coins, there’s a dinging sound
which sounds like you’ve actually collected money.
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme works well on every level/world. Lots of colours have been used to make the settings stand out. In some worlds it’s bright and colourful,
and in some, it’s dark and gloomy because of where it’s set.
Lighting
The lighting is very good throughout. It changes in every world. It’s very effective especially in the dark worlds because it can create suspense for the player –
making them wonder what could happen. It makes the settings very atmospheric.
Post-Production
The game has been made using a modern game animation software. This makes the game appeal to the audience because it gives it a new, fresh look. If the
game was made using pixel art, it would put people off playing it because it would look old and messy.
Fonts
The fonts are big and easy to read, and they stand out against the backgrounds. There placed in the top corners so there not in the way of the gameplay area.
Locations
The locations change on every level. Some of them are in a castle, tower or house. Some are underwater , and the character has to swim to the finish without
being hit. Some levels are set in the sky, which is unusual because it’s not normal to see a path/platform in the sky.
Audience Appeal
The game appeals to the audience because people can play it at any age. More than one player can play at a time because there’s a multiplayer mode. It’s a
family friendly game because it’s not violent, making it suitable for children, and there’s no ‘rude’ dialogue.

4. Existing Product Mario Kart 7Colour Scheme
The colour scheme is bright, and the colours work well to make the background/setting look good. Some race tracks some bright colours (e.g Koopa Cape because it’s
underwater), and some use dark colours (e.g Bowser’s castle). This helps make the racetracks atmospheric. Also, The graphics are very cartoony and modern.
Music
The music is catchy and easy to remember. it mostly doesn’t sound heavy, but on some racetracks it does sound heavy. It’s quite fast paced throughout the game. On the
first two laps of a race, the music is fast paced, but plays at the same speed. On the third lap, the music speeds up even more, making you feel like you need to rush to the
finish.
Sound Effects
The sound effects sound realistic. When an Item dice is ‘smashed’ into, it sounds like glass has shattered. Most sound effects are uplifting, but some sound quite electric (e.g
Lightning Strike and blue shell). The lightning strike shrinks and slows down seven racers and so the racer in last place can catch up and try to get further ahead. The blue
shell flips the racer in first place into the air, making them stop so other racers can get past.
Some sound effects are useful. There’s one that alerts the player if the blue shell is going to pass them. This warns them to get out of the way. This is useful for the player so
they know something is going to happen.
Lighting
The lighting is very good throughout the game. It’s used differently on every race to make it effective/atmospheric. On the bright coloured racetracks, the light is bright, and
on the dark coloured racetracks, the light is dark.
Post Production
The game has been made using modern computer game software. This makes the game appeal to the audience because it’s new and looks fresh, and the sound, music and
footage quality is a high standard. It wouldn’t appeal to the audience if it was made using pixel art because it would look old, and the quality wouldn’t be as good. The
sounds and music would need to be old.
Fonts
The fonts are small, but still clear enough to read. It’s placed in the top right corner of the screen so it’s not in the way of the game play area. When you change racing
position, the position number changes and the font colour changes. This only happens in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In 1st place, it turns to gold, in 2nd place, it turns to silver and in
3rd place it turns to bronze.
Locations
Most settings are on the ground, mostly outside, but some races go through buildings. Some races are set in space (e.g Two Rainbow Roads), and some are set under water
(e.g Koopa Cape). These settings are unique because it’s unusual to see a road in space and underwater.
Audience Appeal
The game appeals to the audience because it’s a family game and anyone can play from any age. Although it’s not relaxing, it ‘s entertaining and people enjoy playing it.

6. Existing Product New Super Mario
Bros 1Graphics
The graphics looks good, but although there not pixel graphics, they look dated because of when the game was made (2006). There not a high quality.
Music
The music sounds uplifting, but old. Again because of when the game was made. It sounds calm and uplifting at the start of the game, but gets heavier and
more tense as the game gets harder. It doesn’t sound annoying until you win a level, where it plays an eerie sound. The music is easy to remember so people
will know what game it is when they hear it.
Sound effects
The sound effects sounds realistic when the game is being played. They don’t sound annoying until you win the game. When you win the game, fireworks go
off and the sound plays, which sounds like someone’s bouncing or shooting something. They don’t sound like real fireworks.
Colour Scheme
Although the game uses lots of different colours, the colour scheme isn’t good because it uses one sometimes two colours. When it uses two colours it looks
good, but when it uses one colour it looks bland. The same colour is used lots throughout a level.
Lighting
The lighting is good. It makes each level atmospheric. In the bright coloured levels, the lighting is bright, making it look colourful. In the dark coloured levels,
the lighting is dark, which makes it appeal to the audience because they might wonder what will happen in a dark level/world.
Post Production
The game has been made using computer animated software, which was modern at the time it was made. The sound effects and music will have been made
by the game developers.
Locations
The locations are different in every world. Some are on the ground, some are under water and some are in volcanoes. This makes the game appeal to the
audience because the game is getting harder as these change.
Audience Appeal
The game appeals to the audience because it’s entertaining. It’s not relaxing because it’s gets harder as it goes on. it’s afamily game as there is a multiplayer
mode on it.
8. Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens
(3ds)
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme is blue and white on the loading page and the Y-Wing fighter plane is flying. It’s like it’s flying through a wormhole. This appeals to the
audience because it gives them something to watch while the page is loading.
When the game loads up, the colour scheme changes to green/gray which works well to make the background look good. The colours change as the game
goes on because the locations change.
Music
The music is quiet, but still loud enough to hear. It can help the player to concentrate as it sounds classical. It doesn’t sound heavy or electric. If it sounded
heavy, it would put people off playing the game because it would be too distracting.
Sound effects
The sound effects sound cartoony, which works well with the game because it’s animated. They don’t sound realistic.
Locations
Every location is set on the ground. Most of it is set outside, but some of it is inside. This makes the game fun, but challenging because if it was set in space,
it would put people off because it wouldn’t have an interesting concept. The locations change as the game gets harder, to make it challenging for the
player.
Post Production
The game has been made using modern animation software. It’s easy to see it’s modern because it doesn’t use pixel art and it has a fresh new look. The
footage quality is a very high standard.
Fonts
The fonts and big, bold and colourful. They stand out against the dark background, and they’re easy to read.
Audience Appeal
The game appeals to the audience because it’s entertaining and it’s challenging, but fun to play. It’s a family game so more than one person can play at a
time. It can be played from any age as long as people understand the concept.

Fonts
The fonts are big and bold, and they’re easy to read. It stands out against the background. They’ve used a light font against a dark
background.
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme looks good throughout the film. There isn’t loads of colours at once so it doesn’t look too busy. It’s mostly dark because of
the film being set in space. It uses light colours when it’s been filmed on the ground.

The film has been made using CGI, but using real people. This is appealing to the audience because it’s a different, but interesting way of

keep the audience gripped, making them think about what might happen.

Lighting
The lighting is very effective because it helps set the scene and makes it atmospheric. The light changes throughout the film, but it’s mostly dark
because it’s set in space. The only time it’s bright is when it’s being filmed on the ground or in a spaceship.
Fonts
The fonts stand out against the background. They’re big, bold and easy to read. The fonts are colourful and the background is dark.
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme is really good throughout the film. Although it’s mostly one colour, it changes when it’s been filmed in a different location.
The dark colours make it easy to see it’s been filmed in space because there are stars in the background. The light colours make it easy to see it’s
been filmed on the ground in a village. The grey colours make it easy to see it’s been filmed on a spaceship.
Post production
The film has been made using real people, and CGI. It’s been made using film making software which is high quality, making the footage and sound
quality a high standard. This appeals to the audience because it looks new, and it’s a different way of making a film, using real people in CGI.
Music
The music sounds very intriguing, which draws the audiences attention in because they want to know what’s going to happen. It’s starts of quite
loud which attracts the audience’s attention. It changes 5-10 seconds after the start, to sounding dramatic, which keeps the audience attached to
the film and makes them interested in watching it.

The music sounds very dramatic and like it’s been performed by an orchestra. This grabs the audiences attention, making them want to listen
and watch more and see what happens.
Sound effects
The sound effects sound realistic. Most of them are loud (e.g when a gun is being shot or an explosion happens).
Locations
Most of the film is made in space either outside or on a spaceship, but some of it is filmed on the ground.
Post Production
The film has been made using CGI. Although the film quality is good, it’s old because it was made in 1977. The software they used will have
been new at the time, but it’s very old today.
Audience Appeal
The film appeals to the audience because it’s a family film, but it has an age restriction on it because some scenes won’t be suitable for
children. The age people can start watching it is 12+. Also, children wouldn’t understand the story.
