2. Initial Reaction
• I would like to either create a short film/trailer or a documentary. The kind of idea I have at the
moment is to create something that talks about the impact that mental health/disability has on
society. I find this to be interesting because it is a topic that is often brought up and talked about
in both positive and negative ways. I would want the product I create, whether it be a short
film/trailer and/or documentary, to focus mainly on this theme. If I were to create a short
film/trailer I would want to try and create music, either through BeepBox or Garageband, that
would work well with my chosen theme whether it being background music or sound effects
that are relevant to what is happening at the time. I’m not so sure about using props in my
video, since I don’t think it would be relevant. However I would want to try and take costume
into consideration since I wouldn’t want my actors to just wear anything and have that ruin the
theme of the video. I would want my actors to wear simple clothing that doesn’t stand out so
much such as them wearing darker colours and not bright/vibrant colours. In order to create this
I will need roughly around three people, myself and two others. One person to be my actor
alongside myself and another to operate camera work/lighting. Alongside my product I might
consider creating movie posters, if I do plan to create a short film/trailer. I would like these to be
minimalistic and show either only myself or my actor as well as the main title. I would want to
posters to look natural, so I could perhaps do a shoot in York with my actor. If I were to create
posters I would want them to look visually and aesthetically pleasing. I had the idea to take
photos of my actor sat on a bench in the park, staring off into the distance. Overall I think that
this will be an interesting project since the topic I have chosen to cover can be quite sensitive but
it is also something that I would like to talk about and give my opinion to. I must also think about
how my actor(s) may feel when approaching this kind of subject with them.
3. Mind Map
Short Film/Trailer
The story of a boy who is coping with the stress of
high school/college but also dealing with the copes
of a mental illness and/or disability. He struggles to
try and speak normally to people as well as having
trouble fitting in with everyone else. The story
follows how he deals with his problems as well as
the stress from work he receives from his
school/college.
I would want the story to focus entirely
on this character as it shows his normal
routine either through school/college or
even at home e.g. what he does, how he
does, how he feels when he does
something or when he interacts with
someone.
If I were to create a short film/trailer I’m not sure
about how long I would make it. I would have to take
into consideration about how long it would take to
shoot, potentially create posters, create the video and
then evaluate. Because of this, I think I would want
the video to be roughly 5-10 minutes if I were to make
a short film. If I were to create a trailer however, I
would want it to roughly be around 2-3 minutes.
Depending on how I plan around the
creation of my product will also determine
how long the short film will be. I don’t
think the time I spend will have much
impact if I were to create a trailer, since it
will roughly be around 2 minutes or so.
4. Mind Map: Short Film/Trailer
(Film Posters)
Film Posters
If I were to create a short film/trailer I would also want to
create film posters to go with it. These posters would
include a release date, for when the short film/trailer
would be released. As well as a main title and even a
subtitle. I would plan to have the title be in the center of
the page to draw the audiences attention more. The
poster would also include a sort of description as to what
the short film/trailer is.
I would want the focus of the film
posters to be on the person the film
is about, this will help to show the
audiences that this character is an
important person and the story
focuses on them.
Because of the theme that I have chosen for my project, I must
make sure that my film posters don’t include any kinds of
material and/or language that could offend any person or social
groups. If I would want to do extra research for my project I
must make sure that I fact check any information I use to make
sure that it was correct and not false.
5. Mind Map
Documentary
A documentary following someone who has a mental
illness and/or disability. Similar to the idea when
thinking about a short film/trailer, if I were to create
that. This documentary would include an interview
talking about how that person deals with their daily
life as well as how they deal with their mental illness
and/or disability e.g. how it effects their routine, if I
effects on how they speak to people/how they work.
Thinking about the length of a documentary, I think
that it would be quite similar to the length of a short
film, which would roughly be about 5-10 minutes. I
must also take into consideration how long it would
take to create the product and/or any additional
products, produce a script and then evaluate my work
at the end.
I would want the main focus to be on the
person who I am interviewing. Due to the
topic I have chosen, I must make sure that
the script I produce is appropriate and
doesn’t make my actor feel uncomfortable
when we do the shoot(s).
The length of the documentary will
depend on how long it takes to produce a
script and how long the script is. I plan to
go into detail and include lots of relative
information. I also plan to do extra
research into my chosen theme to make
sure that I can make everything as
accurate as possible e.g. if I were to use
facts during the interview I would want to
fact check to make sure what I was saying
was true.
6. Key Influencers: Documentary
(Kofi and Lartey)
• Synopsis: “The story of a man who escaped one of the most toxic places in the world, and his
fight try and empower two young boys to do the same.”
• During my visit to the Aesthetica Film Festival I was able to watch a variety of short films. One
of theses short films that stood out the most to me was a documentary, which was directed
by Sasha Rainbow, about two kids named Kofi and Lartey who live in a place called
Agbogbloshie as they struggles through their daily lives having to work under intense
conditions due to a large amount of toxic fumes in the atmosphere. The documentary follows
Abdallah who, after building a children's play center, began a film project with both Kofi and
Lartey, giving them the opportunity to tell their story.
I enjoyed the documentary because it gave us, the
audience, an insight into how both Kofi and Lartey
live their lives compared to how we live our lives. I
found this to be an interesting concept and wanted
to try and incorporate that idea into my own
product.
7. Key Influencers: John Green
(The Fault in Our Stars Movie)
• John Green is a famous author that has written many books, in which have been turned into
many movies that have become quite popular over the years. One of his books ‘The Fault in
Our Stars’ debuted number one on The New York Times best seller. The movie adaptation
also became number one at the box office in 2014. the reason I have chosen John Green as
an influencer is because that said film follows similar features to the one that I have chosen
for my own short film/documentary. Like my own, this movie talks about topics that are
spoken about in everyday situations. I think that this is good since it talks about things that
are commonly spoken about and is something that people question as well.
9. Mood Board
• I found when researching that there were a lot of different kinds of film/documentary/trailer
posters. When looking at different products I made sure I found ones that differed, so that I
had a variety of images to look at for inspiration when creating my product and/or
brainstorming on what I could do/make. If I am going to create a film/trailer poster then I
would want to create something similar to the posters I had found when researching. The
colour schemes are quite simple as well as the use of text. I’m not sure yet if I want to create
a poster where my actor is shown or if I just want to simply use a background and text. I like
the idea of using a mix of bright/vibrant colours to make the poster stand out more and it will
give the poster more of a warmer feeling, which could make the poster look more upbeat.
However doing this could be a problem because of the product I am trying to create Using
bright/vibrant colours could be misinterpreted.
10. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected?
Repeated colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
• The images I have chosen all have different kinds of tones e.g. some posers have more of a
warmer feel because of the use of brighter colours but others have some of a eerie feel
because of the darker colours used. I did this on purpose because I wanted to get a sort of
variety between my images since I didn’t just want to include an mood board that just had
images that were all similar. As mentioned all images have different tones, some having
brighter tones and the others having a more darker tone. When thinking of my own product I
would want to try and create a poster that mixes the two. I think that if I were to create a
poster that uses bright colours that I think that it could be misinterpreted, however this could
be the same if I were to use darker colours, meaning that I would have to use a mix of the
two.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• The idea of my product is to create a documentary/short film/trailer that is centred around a
certain subject of my choice. I have decided to also create additional products e.g. film/trailer
posters. I plan to imitate the kinds of tones used in other documentary's/films that I have
watched to create a trailer that not only feels authentic and professional but also draws in
the audiences attention and looks good. I haven’t thought much about costume and how I
plan to coordinate my colour scheme to match with my actors choice of clothing but I feel as
though this is an important factor to consider because I wouldn’t want my actor to dress in
one way that misleads what my product is. The images do not include any real life aspects
which I also could have considered.
