Editor's Notes
At ácumen Sports we like to say “We create Winners”. This does not mean that we guarantee that our athletes will always win by taking our training.
What we are saying is that we provide essential training to build their mental toughness, to strengthen their ability to control emotions, help build super cognitive skills (which are brain based skills required to succeed as an athlete) and help them maintain a winners attitude-where they always give 110% to play the match and let the results be what they are.
As we have spoken to several world class coaches they have shared a success formula with us that we have summarized into this simple yet powerful formula. We believe you will agree with the three categories but perhaps may have a slightly different percentage for each of the categories:
To receive the edge an athlete requires, the three elements are:
10% to have the right body that is fit to endure the rigors of the sport
50% is the contribution of the coach on the skills required to make the athlete successful
The Balance, the 40% is the missing link, that we call MENTAL TOUGHNESS-made up of the cognitive, mental and emotional training provided by acumen
The missing link that we provide with the acumen high performance training hugely supports the work you already do as coaches. Our training makes the athletes mentally tough with super developed cognitive skills that will make them even more receptive to the essential coaching provided by you. In essence your coaching will take greater hold and performance will improve as the athlete’s transformation unfolds.
The missing link to your success that we train on is built on science-in specific neuro-science and within it a field called neuroplasticity.
To become a Winner, being excellence is essential. The philosopher Aristotle said that “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.”
We must repeat good habits to become excellent at our chosen field.
Neurologist Daniel Levintin, who was quoted extensively in the best selling book “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell has said that it takes 10,000 hours to become a world class expert.
If an athlete practiced good habits (and skills provided by their coach) for 8 hours per day 365 days, it would take them nearly 3 ½ years to finish 10,000 hours. If they practiced only 4 hours it would take them 7 years to complete their expert status. THIS IS PROVIDED THEY HAVE EMBRACED THE CRITICAL SKILLS RECEIVED FROM THEIR COACH.
In our brain we have billions of cells that process information, these are called neurons. Through shared events and experiences one neuron can connect up to 10,000 neurons in what is called a neural network.
As the famous basketball player, Michael Jordan said, I can practice for thousands of hours of a bad shot, and as a result I will become good at being bad.
Our brain has five major areas: our motor skills, our visual ability, our auditory, our ability to focus and of course the most complex of the brain functions, social-emotional.
I the neural networks can be made faster an more efficient, than all brain based functions in essence can be improved.
Neural networks can be improved with the right training done both repeatedly and frequently
We will discuss these five systems a little more in just a few minutes.
First, we must look at how information is gathered through our senses
The gatherers of information to our brain are our five senses.
For an athlete, 80% of information is gathered by the eyes, hence training of the eyes is an important aspect of the ácumen training.
To give you an idea, some of the things about the eyes that we work on include:
Read list
From the senses, the information needs to get to the brain in a fast and efficient manner.
Once the information is gathered and arrives to the brain, we must understand what happens at the brain.
There are five systems in the brain: Sensory-motor, auditory, visual, attention and focus and social-emotional.
Think of these five areas as being 5 cities in different areas of the country. The cities are connected by a road. The road can be a dirt road, a one lane tarmac road or a highway. Each road will get us from one city to another. The difference being how long it will take us. It could take us 4 hours or 45 minutes.
Think of the brain in the same way. By training athletes on their cognitive skills (brain based skills) we are turning these neural networks into highways that help move information more efficiently and faster.
It is also interesting that these five areas by being connected lead to improvements in all areas while we focus on improving one area.
In order for the brain to make good decisions (Effective decisions) it needs large quantities of high quality information from the senses.
The eyes have to be trained to collect more high quality information and send it to the brain.
The neurons in the brain have to process information at the speed of travelling on a highway and then submit this information to the body.
The body has to be fit to accept and react to this information.
We break-up our mental toughness (high performance) training into four major groupings:
Physical and Cognitive skills
Mental skills
Visual skills
Emotional skills
During the acumen high performance training, here are some of the areas we improve:
The physical and cognitive aspect of the training is connected.
Cognitive skills: Concentration, attention, Focus, Short and long term memory
Physical: Coordination, Dynamic and static balancing, Fine motor coordination and reaction time.
Visual skills: Reaction time, peripheral vision and spatial judgment.
Managing stress is part of our mentality training and works on breathing efficiency, visualization skills, relaxing techniques and self-motivation.
Mental toughness also involves, control over emotions and being focused on the present moment instead of worrying about what happened or what may happen.
What is our training method?
A tough mind that can make efficient and effective decisions requires the senses to be strong, the emotions to be under control and the body fit to endure the rigors of the sport.
In Argentina, where acumen was born, many famous athletes have trained-here is a sample listing.
ADD ANY NAMES TRAINED LOCALLY
How does our training work?
Athletes come to the ácumen Sports Center twice per week.
The 1st time they will have Physical/Cognitive training for 1 hour with a coach. This is followed by one hour in the interactive zone under the supervision of a coach.
The 2nd time they will have one-on-one mentality training with a coach followed again by one hour in the interactive zone under the supervision of a coach.
Daily on your phone they will train for 30 minutes on Lumosity-brain based training.
At the same time they must maintain their focus on their goals on the ácumen Performance tracker.
As with every business you must understand what it takes to succeed, this way you know you have what it takes to be successful.
We have divided this into five areas of success focus
Your 1st Success focus should be on building a BrainFit community and you do so by adhering to our Code of Conduct, honoring our 100% satisfaction guarantee and being positive and timely in all interactions with parents. It is about doing things right.
Your second success focus should be on growing your business and you do so by ensuring that everyone on the team is aware and focused on increasing customers, implementing our comprehensive sales & marketing system and building retaining loyal customers.
Your third success focus should be on delivering the highest quality products. You can only do so if you hire the best people and invest in their improvement.
Your fourth success focus should be on building a successful business and you do so by following the system, doing things timely and meeting or exceeding system standards.
The fifth and final success focus area is that as a franchisee you too must learn and grow and you do this through participation and contribution to the system, being open to learn and grow and being open to receiving coaching and mentoring from us
This concept was created by the BrainFit Group from Singapore in 2001 and has become much stronger and powerful as the years have gone by.
In 2013, Global Franchise Masters also of Singapore took the BrainFit Studio brand as part of their portfolio to globally grow and support the BrainFit Franchise. Global Franchise Masters if our franchisor and has expertise in franchising.
Between the two the way to market is developed with strong programs and strong systems and all of which is supported by strong training and support.
Global Franchise Masters is committed to global expansion via franchising.
