3. EXISTING PRODUCT
This example of a Fanzine is based on coffee. It is very relevant as most of
the population loves a good coffee in the morning to keep them wake for
the day. The photos in this fanzine are very simplistic, the front cover
attracts your attention because of this simplicity. The front cover doesn't
include any typical conventions which you would see in a magazine which
makes me more intrigued to this fanzine.
Throughout the Fanzine there are facts about the type of coffee which is
featured, however there is not a specific interview which has taken place in
this Fanzine unlike most of the Fanzines which I have researched. Drawings
and Sketches are added into this Fanzine which makes it seem more
interesting, the drawings have been added to make a fact seem more
interesting. These sketches also have very bright colours which jump out in
the fanzine straight away.
This 44 page fanzine have very simplistic colour themes of beige and brown- this could
symbolize the colours for the coffees and cups. The photography is very detailed and
focused on the main focus of the image. The text to picture ratio is shown well in the
double page spreads of this fanzine as there is a bit of text on one side of the page and
an image on the other side. The photography is very detailed and focused on the main
focus of the image. The text to picture ratio is shown well in the double page spreads
of this fanzine as there is a bit of text on one side of the page and an image on the
other side. The font choices change for different text. The headlines throughout the
Fanzine are in a curly font which look elegant, on all the other types of coffee the fonts
are straight and very basic which matches the simplistic theme.
The writing style of this Fanzine is very descriptive because it is teaching the audience
what the differences in the types of coffee are. The mode of address is very directed
towards the audience who reads this- the use of the personal pronouns will entice the
audience to read on as it feels like they are being personally spoke to. The content of
this fanzine was based in 2013 when Coffee became a whole new trend with trending
barista art on Instagram and other social medias.
5. EXISTING PRODUCT
This example of a Fanzine is based on Feminism. It is very relevant as
Feminism is a relevant subject throughout the society. This fanzine is also
supporting ‘Black Girl Magic’- this is a concept and movement that was
popularized in 2013. The concept was born as a way to "celebrate the
beauty, power and resilience of black women”. The photography through
this fanzine is very simplistic but yet powerful, the front cover stands out
through the colour scheme and the title. Most of the articles which have
been written in this fanzine are very empowering for women, some examples
of articles are, ‘generation: free to be me”, “url activism”, “roll the tape” and
‘the revolution will be televised”. Just by the titles of the articles and the
layout of the articles will make the audience feel empowered. This Feminism
Fanzine include some sketches on the section of ‘Tumblr Feminism”,
however it still keeps with the text to picture ratio which works really
effectively throughout this fanzine. At the end of this fanzine they are
multiple interviews which have taken place to find out about different aged
females views on feminism and ’Black girl magic’. On some of the pages the
photos which are shown have been taken into a studio which personally
makes me feel as though this Fanzine are motivated to make a movement.
The images are also very professional.
The main colours consist of Pink, White, Grey and Black, with a few pages
being a conception to this colour theme. All the colours which have been
used are very simple but make the Fanzine stand out against other
products. Throughout the whole zine the same font has been used- When
researching different fanzines there were only a few who kept the same
uniformed font like this fanzine. The writing style of this Fanzine is
descriptive because it teaches the audience about this movement and
feminism in this day and age. The mode of address changes through the
fanzine, the interviews are all in first person, however some articles are very
formal. This Fanzine was produced in 2016, this is when Feminism started to
influence younger girls which meant it became more popular movement.
7. EXISTING PRODUCT
This Fanzine explores the issue of waste and mass consumption in the fashion
industry, its aim is to inspire you to buy less and care more about the environment.
Most of the photos which are included in this fanzine are illustrated, actual photos
or infographics. The illustrations and infographics are used very effective to make
people think about their actions when buying new clothes. The double page
spread which is shown above has a dark photography- with the dark lighting it
could show the negative feelings towards the waste of fashion. Throughout the
fanzine there are little interviews between believers of this movement.
This 124 page fanzine is filled with tips from leaders of circular fashion movement
and innovators in textile recycling. There is a double page teaching people how to
preserve their clothes and get rid of any stains which are on any clothes. The text
to picture ratio is very equal in this fanzine, there are pages of illustrations just by
themselves with no text but there are also pages of text with no images.
The main colours consist of Black, Orange and white, with a
few pages which are different colours. All the colours which
have been included stand out and look like they are making a
statement on every page. The font changes throughout the
fanzine for different subjects. Most of the titles and the
illustrations are in bold so that they will stand out compared
to other fanzines. The writing style of this fanzine is the same
as all the fanzines which I have researched before, it is a
descriptive writing style because it is teaching people that
buying new clothes is bad for the environment and is trying to
tell the audience how they could save their old clothes and
save the environment as well.
This fanzine was published in December 2017 which is when
communities decided that the fashion industry is contributing
to the Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere as well as having to
8. • A fanzine is a magazine usually produced by
amateurs for fans of a particular performer,
interest of entertainment. This is often like
sports, music, opinions and politics. Fanzines
can have completely different layouts but
from what I have researched most of the
time Fanzines include interviews from the
subject of the fanzine, they also include
illustrations, articles and photographs which
all relate to the subject of the Fanzine.
RESEARCH SUMMARY
When looking through the Fanzines
which I have researched I have noticed
that they all have significant illustrations
which could be something which I would
want to include in my Fanzine project.
11. IDEA 1 MUSICAL
THEATRE
Context:
I have chosen to this idea
mainly because it is something
which I am interested in and I
know quite a lot in this subject.
I wanted to try add in one of
my other ideas if I tried to do
this idea- I would explore
feminism and racism in musical
theatre.
Articles:
The different articles which I wanted to
explore in my fanzine are:
‘Musical Theatre better than before!’
‘LGBT community taking Broadway by
storm’
‘Why Hamiliton reminds us of the roots of
British Musical Theatre in Political
Activism’ BRANDON VICTOR DIXON TO
VICE PRESIDENT-ELECT PENCE
’What if musical theatre was made for
women?’
Consider
Including:Interviews- I would interview any
connections with the Theatre
Royal/Grand Opera House- ask
them about their favourite musical
and what they would like to see
more of in Musical Theatre.
Consider
Including:Photographs- From the
woman's march or from
a musical.
Consider
Including:
Colour theme:
Fonts:
Writing Style:
I would like my colour scheme
to be bright and cheerful. I
would like to use the different
shades of blue incorporated in
this whether it is a design like
my 2nd existing product double
page spreads. I like the idea of
a bright fanzine as it would
stand out and look appealing
for those who like musicals.
Text/Picture Ratio- From what I have
research of existing fanzines I will
use the same guidance which most
of these have. I would have one full
sized image on one side of the page
and an article on the other.
My writing style would be
descriptive as I would want
to teach people about the
different genres and how
references from the world
like Feminism and Racism
is being portrayed into
musical theatre.
My fonts
would be very
bold and at
times in a
swirly text like
the ’fact’ font
in the first
existing
product.
13. IDEA 2 FEMINISM
Context:
I have chosen to this idea
mainly because it is something
which I feel really strong about.
I would want to create a
fanzine about this to teach
people the different types of
movements going on in
feminism. As well as teaching
them the actual different types
of feminism.
Articles:
The different articles which I wanted to
explore in my fanzine are:
Suffragettes
Modern vs Traditional Feminism
Me too campaign and other campaigns
Feminism acts in the 1900’s
Musical Theatre and Feminism
Consider
Including:Interviews- I would interview some
local feminists which I know. I might
even contact the feminist group at
College if there is one. I would ask
some questions which are
frequently asked to feminists and
explore their different replies.
Consider
Including:Photographs/illustration
sdrawings- I am not a
major artist but I would
like to add some
photographs- maybe an
illustration of different
females
Consider
Including:
Colour theme:
Fonts:
Writing Style:
I would like my colour scheme
to be pastel colours. This will
be light pink, light blue, light
green and purple colours. This
is because the fanzine which I
looked at for my research it
had all pastel colours and it
looked really good.
Text/Picture Ratio- I would like to
have more text in this fanzine,
however it wont be like an essay
instead it will have the occasional
photo on one of the double page
spreads but I will make sure it looks
good and professional.
My writing style would be
descriptive as I have
previously suggested that I
would want to teach my
audience the main facts
about feminism in my
articles as well as the
movement in feminism.
My fonts would consist of
being very plain and simple but
still stand out. In the coffee
fanzine they had different fonts
for different headlines- this
might be something which I
would look at. I would have a
curly font for a statistic and
have all the article text in the
same font.
15. IDEA 3
PHOTOGRAPHY
Context:
I have chosen to this idea
mainly because it is something
which I am interested in and
something which I would like
to learn more about. There are
quite a lot of fanzines which
are based on photography so it
would be helpful to refer back
to them if I did choose this
idea.
Articles:
The different articles which I wanted to
explore in my fanzine are:
Tips on how to photograph
wildlife/interview
Consider
Including:Interviews- I would try to interview
photographers who have been in
the industry for a while and get their
tips to put at the end of my fanzine.
Consider
Including:Photographsdrawings
illustrations- seen as
though this fanzine is
focused on
photography there will
be photographs which
will look professional
Consider
Including:
Colour theme:
Fonts:
Writing Style:
I would like my colour scheme
to be based on the theme of
my photography. I was
planning on doing a nature
fanzine which would include
the colours of different shades
of green, black and brown to
create this naturistic theme.
Text/Picture Ratio- There would be
more images than text in this
fanzine as it is based on a
photography fanzine so there would
barely be any text. However, I would
like to add some text in whether it is
a famous quote or a poem to match
the theme of the fanzine.
For this fanzine because it
is mainly all photographs
there isn't any writing style.
However, if I do choose
this idea I would add
quotes/poem to this
fanzine- this would mean
they were in first person.
My fonts would almost look
handwritten as I would like
this fanzine to look
homemade and non
professional to go with the
amateur photographs. I
would find a curly font to
write the title and any text in
the fanzine.

Look at different types of content, design elements, the subject and context.
Type of content- studio/location photography, articles, reviews, adverts, sketches, drawings and other artwork
Design – colour schemes, photography and images, text/picture ratio, font choices
Subject and context – What subject(s) is the fanzine covering? What is the writing style? What is the mode of address? In what context was the fanzine produced? Context is the environment in which something was produced. Think about the time this was made.

You don’t need to find links between different fanzines because, often there are not any.
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
