Issue/Challenge
By initiative of Miyagi Universityof Education(MUoE),GreaterSendai RCEhave developedESD/SDGsactivity
by networking with each regional network in Greater Sendai area. MUoE links the urban area (Sendai City)
with agricultural land (Osaki City), mountainous regions (Shiroishi/Shichigasyuku) as well as sea side
(KesennumaCity).The regionandconsequentlythe networkwere devastatedbythe earthquakesin2008 and
2011 and now incorporate disaster reduction as part of its core work. Specific activities include promoting
nature conservation; reductionof wastes and environmental educationin the urban area of Sendai; wetland
conservationandregionaldevelopmentbasedonwet-paddyrice agricultureinOsaki city,namedaGIAHSsite;
integrated,systematicenvironmental educationatall levelsof schools,protectionof the marine environment
and eco-tourisminKesennumaCity,whereweredamagedbyHuge earthquake in11 March 2011. In addition,
a local knowledge base has been created to provide ESD actors the latest scientific information, learning
materials and good practices. In Mountain area, Shiroishi/Shichigasyuku, conserve the environment of water
and forestsystems.
Education Strategy and Response The strategy of RCE Greater Sendai is to practice ESD based on regional
characteristics.Itstartsfromenvironmental educationaimingatarecycling-basedsociety,andlaterexpanding
the scope to widerESDissues.
