  21. 21. 21 Smarter packaging!
  22. 22. ©2014 H.B. Fuller Company 22 Smarter packaging is… •Stronger •More reliable in the supply chain •Easier to carry •Easier to open/close
  23. 23. Handle reinforcement application examples 23
  24. 24. Handle and hand hole reinforcement •Avoid catastrophic multi pack failure •Protect brand image •Stronger handle performance •Potential paper reduction 24
  25. 25. Brand assurance on bottled beer box Industry Challenge • Package tear in warehouse and stores • Refrigerated conditions • Product damage 25 Smarter Packaging • Preventing catastrophic handle failure in ambient and refrigerated conditions • Enabled board weight reduction by reinforcing critical stress points
  26. 26. 26 We offer several access hole reinforcement solutions Shown here is our kraft Back tape which we developed for the Canadian beer market. Sesame® Kraft Backed Tape
  27. 27. ©2014 H.B. Fuller Company 27 Sesame®Dry End Tape In addition to our traditional Sesame Tape technology we developed a dry end application of our tape. This Dry end application is easier to apply yet strong enough to support the weight of contents. Both of these technologies can be applied to reinforce access holes from beer to Televisions, improving the stability of the package throughout the supply chain. We have ben supporting beer industry with these tape technologies & protecting beer consumers in North America, Europe, and Latin America over 35 years.
  28. 28. Patented multi pack handle reinforcement Industry Challenge • Handle failures in stores • Cool, wet and humid conditions • Cost effective solution • Need to run at line speed 28 Smarter Packaging • Brand protection with improved handle strength in difficult conditions • Allowed >20% caliper reduction • Intermittent application to reduce tape usage/cost. • In line 30,000 cartons/hr
  29. 29. Patent pending: H.B. Fuller in-line intermittent handle 29 High speed, in-line handle application with line speeds approx. 15,000/hr Plastic handles manually inserted Line speeds approx. 5,000/hr Manual or slow off line process Industry Challenge Smarter Packaging
  30. 30. Containment/reinforcement application examples 30
  31. 31. ©2014 H.B. Fuller Company Containment –bulk packaging Benefits •Stronger, bulge resistant package •Burst Protection •Reduced product loss •Paper reduction •Cost reduction
  32. 32. ©2014 H.B. Fuller Company •This packaging is used for intermediate transfer box for processed meat & poultry. By reinforcing the critical stress points in the bin we are able to make a stronger more efficient package. Imagine 2000 kg of meat spilling out a ruptured bulk bin in a warehouse. By adding our tapes we were able to make the bin stronger and more bulge resistant, increase the burst protection and reduce cost. 32 Containment –bulk packaging
  33. 33. H.B. Fuller Sesame®sustainability North America Estimated: •15-30% of paper weight reduction •22,000 tons less paper per annum •380,000 fewer trees = 2.3 million new bulk boxes and saved •1.8 million gallons of oil •157 million gallons of water •92 million kw/hrof electricity 33 *The above estimate is based on H.B. Fuller internal data and calculated using the assumption of 12.8 ftper tape x 8 tapes per box + 12.5% waste/stock = 102.4 ft/ box. 75% of total ST supply (1.8MM mft) reduced paper aveof 20% = 44.8MM lbs, 22.4 tons.
  34. 34. We designed a double wall bin with tape reinforcement to replace the triple wall bins, thereby saving the industry between 15% and 30% in paper fiber. In 2013, 1.8 Billion ft, a half million KM of Sesame® Tape was applied through 41 corrugated plants in North America, not just for meat and poultry, but also on fresh, frozen, and dry foods, plastic resin and chemical bins, and machinery parts bulk boxes. 34 H.B. Fuller Sesame®sustainability North America
  35. 35. Score line & bulge reinforcement Benefits •Package failures reduced •Bulge reduction •Improved stacking strength •Score line failure protection •Longer resistance through supply chain 35
  36. 36. Seafood box reinforcement Industry Challenge •Burst during off-shore packing due to score line failure •Damp environments 36 Smarter Packaging •Bursting eliminated in wet, pressurized conveyor system •Reduced damage of the box and contents •Eliminated the need for higher cost liner combination
  37. 37. ©2014 H.B. Fuller Company Re-tripped distribution box –score line reinforcement Industry Challenge •Vertical score line tear due to French fold •Boxes failing in the supply chain 37 Smarter Packaging •Vertical score line reinforced to prevent tear •Doubled shipper box usage •Sustainable solution with fiber reduction
  38. 38. Patented Sesame®high modulus: tray reinforcement Industry Challenge •Bottom sag damaging the product underneath •Tray failure before arriving retail at retail stores •Extra cost to reduce product damages Smarter Packaging •Reduced bottom sag with reinforcement, preventing product damage •Sustainable and cost efficient solution with potential for paper reduction 17% Bottom Sag Improvement 38
  39. 39. Retail ready application examples 39
  40. 40. Retail ready packaging & easy opening Benefits •Clean opening •Reduce paper usage by > 30% •Compared to 2 piece systems •Single in-line process at line speed •Clean opening with no BCT impact 40
  41. 41. This is very popular application in Europe and the trend is growing in North America and in Asia. Stores in Europe and in the US do not allow employees to use knives in opening packages for display, Why, because they are not safe to use, they can cause lost time accidents to employees and can cut through the products inside. The biggest benefit to using our opening system is that you do not have to sacrifice box strength by using perforations to gain a clean cut tray. 41 Retail ready packaging & easy opening
  42. 42. H.B. Fuller Open-Sesame® System 42
  43. 43. Retail shelf ready opening: 2 to 1 piece box Industry Challenge •Costly 2 piece box •Desired cost reduction •Manual packing line because of box design 43 Smarter Packaging •35% paper saving •50% increased productivity using automated packing line •Maintained compression strength award winner
  44. 44. Specialty applications 44
  45. 45. 45 Cutting Edge® Industry Challenge •Time consuming off-line, manual process •Limited blade option Smarter Packaging •Inline, fully integrated application •Flexible blade design and width •Safer blade offering for brand owners
  46. 46. 46 Close-Sesame™ Smarter Packaging •Faster in-line application •Eliminated manual operation, reduced laborcost •Meets e-commerce demands Industry Challenge •Hand application of double sided tape •Slow off-line process with additional costs on labor
