2. • Esports (also known as electronic sports, e-sports, or eSports) is a
form of competition using video games.
• Esports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video
game competitions, particularly between professional players,
individually or as teams.
• Although organized competitions have long been a part of video
game culture, these were largely between amateurs until the late
2000s, when participation by professional gamers and spectatorship
in these events through live streaming saw a large surge in
popularity.
• By the 2010s, esports was a significant factor in the video game
industry, with many game developers actively designing and
providing funding for tournaments and other events.

6. 19th October, 1972:
The earliest known video game competition was held
at Stanford University. Players were invited to the:
Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics
The winner was Bruce Baumgart who won a year’s
subscription to Rolling Stone magazine.
1974 - The All Japan TV Game Championships
300 locations around Japan, 16 finalists, 1 winner

7. Challenged by 1,300 different people, only 7 won!

8. In 1984 Konami and Centuri held the first international
arcade game competition called ‘Track and Field’.
As of 2016, it is still the largest ever gaming event with
more than 1 million players from the USA and Japan.
This game introduced BUTTON MASHING
In 1991, Street Fighter II, introduced and popularized
head to head matches where score no longer determined
who won.
This game is responsible for the multiplayer and
‘deathmatch’ type of games we see today.

9. Task: eSports Timeline of Major Events
Brief
Your task is to create a timeline (starting at 1970 and finishing at 2022) which highlights 10 of the most interesting or
influential dates / events in the eSports world / scene. You should include the year, date and a brief description for each
event.
Tips
Use a preexisting template in PowerPoint (search for it from the NEW screen)
Use space carefully
When finished, save the file as a PowerPoint File and then as a PNG image file.
Submission
Submit your PNG image file to Compass under the task ‘Timeline’ by the due date for S or N
Success Criteria
Heading, fully labelled, neat, concise, has at least 10 dates/facts explained
