1. Student Ambassadors for Digital
Literacy (SADL)
LSE SADL is a programme which aims to develop and enhance students’
information and digital skills, encouraging peer-to-peer support and fostering
partnerships between staff and students.
It is now in its 3rd year with over 40 student ambassadors and 9 senior
ambassadors. Finishing the programme in previous years, the senior
ambassadors support us in running the workshops and by coordinating student
led projects. It includes four 90-minute workshops on:
Finding and evaluation information
Academic practices: reading and research
Managing and sharing information
Digital footprint.
Evaluating information found online
10 minute group activity where students assess spoof websites
A very brief checklist of things to consider is shared with the students at the
start – who wrote it, why, when was it updated, what domain is it on.
A very brief demonstration of evaluating a website is done by the trainer -
http://www.preparingforemergencies.co.uk
Each group then reviews and critiques one of the following websites:
Dihydrogen Monoxide: http://www.dhmo.org/
Tree Octopus: http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/
Ova Prima Foundation http://www.ovaprima.org/index.htm
Drop bears https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear
Class discussion on what was found.
Planning and managing assignments
15 minute group activity for students to discuss steps and tools used in
managing and planning tasks and activities
Each group discusses what steps they take in dealing with an
assignment and what tools they use.
Flipchart paper and marker pens are made available for mind-map
drawings.
Students are encouraged to explore differences between
disciplines e.g. law vs statistics.
Diagrams are displayed and groups share with the class what they
found.
