Respiratory Diseases
Some of the most common infectious
diseases in the Philippines are ones that
target the respiratory system. Millions of
Filipinos are affected each year and leads to
loss of life.
4. The Respiratory System
- It is the system in charge of
gas exchange by taking in
oxygen and removing carbon
dioxide from the body.
5. How Does Respiratory System Works
- Air enters through the nostrils, leads to the
esophagus, then, the trachea or windpipe,
the bronchi, and then enters the lungs.
- The lungs are full of small sacs known as
alveoli, and this is where gas exchange
occurs. Respiratory diseases affect any of
these organs. Some affect multiple
respiratory organs at once

What causes Respiratory Diseases?
Pathogens
Viruses and multiple
species of bacteria and
fungi
Secondhand Smoke
Tobacco Smoke,
Air Pollution,
7. Symptoms
congestion or runniness of nose,
which could indicate mucus
production and buildup;
coughing
Respiratory Infections
Acute Respiratory Infection
affects the
nostrils,
sinuses, and the
larynx. Examples
of diseases that
are URIs are
sinusitis, colds,
laryngitis,
and pharyngitis.
Lower Respiratory Infections
affect the trachea,
and the
lungs themselves.
Some common LRIs
are bronchiolitis and
pneumonia.
a heavy feeling in the
chest
fatigue
Sore throat
Sore muscles
8. Pneumonia
❖ serious disease
❖ causes inflammation in
the lungs and the alveoli
❖ infectious disease that has
many known pathogens
that can cause it
Causes:
Streptococcus
pneumoniae, which can
also cause blood
infections, an infection of
the brain, and many more.
pathogens
Signs and
Symptoms
●difficulty breathing;
● coughing;
● fever;
● fatigue;
●chills;
● nausea; and
● low body
temperature.
9. - is an infection caused by a bacteria
called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It
can be classified into either latent
tuberculosis or active tuberculosis
itself as a disease.
Causes:
- caused by the
pathogen
Mycobacterium
tuberculosis
- bacteria that
spreads airborne
Symptoms:
● severe cough;
● chest pain;
● blood after
coughing or blood
in
phlegm;
● fatigue;
● weight loss and
appetite loss; and
● fever.
Tuberculosis
10. - inflammation of the bronchitis tube
- may be classified into acute
bronchitis or chronic bronchitis.
Acute bronchitis - characterized by
the production of mucus by the
lining of the bronchi, and the
inflammation of these tubes
Chronic bronchitis - maybe a
possibility if the symptoms
associated with acute bronchitis
keep repeating themselves
11. Causes:
- commonly caused by viruses
Signs and Symptoms:
● severe cough;
● fevers;
● release of mucus that is dark in
color;
● bloody mucus; and
● difficulty breathing.
Bronchitis
12. Prevention and Control of
Respiratory Diseases
Proper hygiene
proper hand
washing is
observed at all
times
Avoiding Irritants
Entering an area
that can
potentially have
respiratory
irritants, make
sure to always
wear a mask to.
Avoid/Quit Smoking
Smoking has many
negative health effects,
such as blood vessel
damage, heart problems,
and a weakened respiratory
system.
Keeping the Immune
System Healthy
Taking vitamin
supplements, having a
proper diet, and
performing regular
exercise.
13. Myths and Misconceptions on Respiratory Diseases
Smoking is OK in small amounts
There is no acceptable amount of smoking. Even
having one cigarette stick a day can have many
negative health effects, and some of these can severely
affect the respiratory system. Smoking should be
avoided as much as possible.
All Respiratory Diseases are the same
As you have learned in this lesson, many of
the symptoms of respiratory diseases are the
same. However, the parts they affect and the
pathogens that cause them are distinct. This
means that the ways of treating these
diseases are also different.
Colds and Cough are Okay to ignore
In most cases, cases of colds and coughs can
resolve themselves. However, these can also
be symptoms for other respiratory diseases. If
these symptoms of colds and coughs do not
resolve after an extended period of time,
consult a doctor.
14. “Life is not measured by the
number of breaths we take but
by the moments that take our
breath away.”
— Mary Angelou
