New York’s Best Kept Secret
In April 2013, Masterpiece Caterers, cofounded by Gieto Nicaj and Paul Nicaj, became the exclusive caterer at India
House. They bring a fresh approach to the classical cuisine presented to each of the members and guests. Defined by their
motto “Mastering the art of fine cuisine”, the culinary team pulls inspiration from the heritage of their international
home. Along with their classical American dishes, they feature delights such as Sea Scallops Curry, Langoustine with
Couscous, and Ginger Lobster Fried Rice.
Located in the heart of the Financial District, this 19th century building stands as one of the remaining iconic landmarks
of its time. Housing a private collection of some of the world’s most traveled art and treasures from Asia and beyond,
this Renaissance-inspired palazzo is the home of the distinguished India House. Historians and New Yorkers alike walk
by this hidden gem, unknown to the treasures housed inside. Even fewer are aware that the venue is available for private
events. For the select that do, celebrating a wedding in the Marine Room, a holiday party in the Hanover Room or drinks
at the signature Blue Bar is almost a key in the door of the best kept secret in New York City.
The India House’s distinct name embodies the notion of the exotic in a time when India’s trade was characterized by its
rare spices and silks. The founders also wanted to pay homage to the Dutch West Indies Company, the first colonizers of
Manhattan. Since its inception, India House has represented the intellectual crossroads of foreign policy, commerce, art
and trade. Countless dignitaries, tradesmen, and decorated figures of the 20th century including President Franklin D.
Roosevelt have walked through these halls and assembled in these rooms with the intent to foster business and foreign
relations.
Originally built in the mid 1800s, this landmark is a true piece of New York history. The beautiful exterior of the
building faces the luscious green British Garden, a memorial dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II to all the Commonwealth
victims of the September 11th attacks. Fifty large neoclassical-style windows of the building bring in beautiful natural
light into every nook of the building. A grand staircase runs through the center of the clubhouse, leading to the 11
function rooms, each characterized by high ceilings, large exterior windows and several feature a working fireplace. The
interior of the building recently underwent an extensive restoration project, reestablishing the integrity of the ornate 20th
century architecture while still keeping the intimate ambiance of a sophisticated club.
India House’s membership celebrates its 100th Anniversary in the upcoming year. After a century of distinction, India
