Henry Fayol, in early part of twentieth century
proposed that all managers Perform five functions.
Today,these functions have been condensed to four.
They are:-
I. Planning
II. Leading
III. Controlling
IV. Organizing

If you have no particular destination in mind,then any
road will sufice.However, if you have someplace in
particular you want to go,you need to plan the best way
to get there.
Because an organisation exists to achieve some
particular purpose,Planning is must in management.
Planning defines goals,establish strategies for
achieving goals and develop plans to integrate and
coordinte activities.

It is first function of Management
Planning is Forward looking.
Planning is a thinking process distinct from
operations.
Planning is pervasive.
Planning is continuous.
Planning is interactive and iterative process.

Planning results into selection of course of action.
6. Organizing
Managers are responsible for arranging and structure
work to accomplish the organization’s Goals.
Organizing defines what needs to be done,how it will
be done and who is to do it.
7. Characteristics of Organizing It is a formal structure of activities and authorities.
Efforts to achieve goals of unit at each level are clearly
defined.
Efforts are properly Departmentalized.
Authorities and responsibilities are clearly defined
Inter-relations among each employee become distinct
depending upon relative importance of Efforts.
8. Leading
Leading is a critical function of management.
Every organization has people, and a manager’s work is
to work with and through people to accomplish goals.
It includes following sub-functions:
-Leadership
-Motivation
-Communication
9. Leadership
Leadership is the essence of successful management.
Leadership is a broader function of “Directing”.
Successful leadership will influence the people
spontaneously through infinitive appeal rather than
the external factor.
10. Motivation
Motivation is an important function of “Directing”
function of management.
Generally employees are not putting their the best in
them from organization.
It is generally concluded that some deliberate efforts
must be made to moyivate the employees to extract the
maximum possible capabilities to the benefit of
organization.
11. Controlling
After goals and plans are set tasks and structured
arrangements are put in place and people are
hired,trained and motivated there has to be some
evaluation of whether things are going as planned this
function comes under controlling.
12. Characrteristics of controlling
Planning and controliing are intimately related.
It is a positive process.
It is a person oriented activity.
It is a dynamic Process.
It is a pervasive activity.
