Description Constructed between 1176 - 1439, the Strasbourg Cathedral stood as the world’s tallest building from
1625 to 1874 and remained the tallest church in the world until 1880, just before this photograph was
taken. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of late Gothic architecture in the
world. In this peculiar photograph, the famous west front is sharply delineated and the details of
thousands of stone figures appear clearly as demanded by the camera’s eye; however, upon closer
examination a variance appears in line quality and proportion in the lower sections of photograph.
The lower section of the cathedral, as well as the surrounding buildings and people appear to have
been retouched by hand, most likely in oil colors or ink, which was becoming professional practice at
the time. The tiny figures also appear to have been re-touched or hand painted to exaggerate the

Description The Galerie des Batailles is located in the Palace of Versailles and contains large paintings depicting
major military events in the history of France. Corinthian columns and marble busts of military heroes
punctuate the solemn hall. The large cornice supports vault painted coffered entablatures. The duct
midway through the hall contains 16 bronze tables inscribed with fourteen centuries of names of the
princes, admirals, and military figures killed or wounded to death while fighting for their country.
Without recognizing the hall or historical site itself, the seriality of the repeated white busts, columns,
and rectangular paintings, against the dramatic perspective lines of the patterned ceiling and floor,
               create an interesting composition alone.

Description The Aphrodite of Milos, better known as the Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek marble statue and
one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Believed to depict Aphrodite (called Venus
by the Romans), the Greek goddess of love and beauty, the statue is slightly larger than life size at
203 cm (6.7 ft) high, and on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Photography and sculpture have
long enjoyed a close, complicit relationship. Both mediums seek permanence, through material
presence and through photogenic testimony. Photographs of sculpture become even more desirable
through the passage of time, as each medium acquires a special patina and a romantic detachment
from the everyday context of their original capture.

Description This image features the villainess Morgan Lefay as she tricks Sir Tristram into bringing a shield to
Camelot that she believes will reveal to King Arthur the love affair between his wife Queen
Guinevere and Sir Lancelot. Beardsley uses the floral decoration in Morgan’s garments to create a
twisting border around the image. Morgan’s figure appears to be a part of the border as it snakes and
curls around Sir Tristram, reflecting her malicious ensnarement of the unknowing knight. Beardsley’s
marvelous draftsmanship are wonderfully apparent in this image seen in the delicate yet detailed
drawing of Sir Tristram’s garments and Morgan Lefay’s attractive form.

Description In this illustration from Le Morte D’Arthur, Beardsley depicts a scene from the beginning of the story
explaining how Arthur came into Merlin’s keeping. Earlier in the narrative, Merlin had agreed to
assist the King Uther Pendragon of England in both his war and matrimonial endeavors if he would
give him his firstborn son as payment. Uther agreed and after his son was born he delivered him to
Merlin. This print is a wonderful example of his ability to unify an image with decorative elements.
The ornate botany are repeated in the border where dragon-like forms seem to peek through, perhaps
a reminder of King Uther’s character. The unified elements of the scene help direct the viewer into
the very heart of the woods where the main event is occurring.

Description In the 19th century, people became fascinated with documenting the natural world around them, and
artists began producing works like this one for scholars, lay persons, and collectors alike. The care
and quality invested in the creation of these pieces foretold their value far beyond any practical use

La Belle Missia- Madame Thadee Natanson- who is shown on this poster, was often painted by
Lautrec. The painter often visited the Nathonsons, who had many friends among the artists.

Lautrec’s posters would usually start with hasty sketches on scraps of paper in a cafe. But the final
product was worked out to the smallest detail of design using oil paints on thick Manila paper. The
lines were copied or traced onto the stone, leaving nothing to chance. He was able to reproduce all the
rest of the poster by memory on the stone.

Description Printed with permission from the Matisse Estate in 2003, these pochoirs were designed by Matisse in
1950. In 1948, Matisse promised Sister Jacques Marie, a young nun and nurse of the Foyer
Lacordaire, that he would design a Chapel and began sketching it that same year. The Chapel stood as
a monument to the spirit of Matisse, relying on colors and shapes. Some pochoir designs
commemorate the costumes or dress worn by the bishops and clergy during Easter at the Chapel.
Others were done to commemorate the stained glass windows of the Chapel, which were based on
natural plants, cactus and flowers, of the region. Matisse writes; "For me, this chapel is the
achievement of an entire life's work, the outcome of tremendous, difficult, sincere effort."

Description Henri Matisse’s last, and some say his greatest, artistic triumph was a series of papiers coupes [or
paper cutouts]. Confined to his bed and unable to paint freely, Matisse cut from colored paper
freehand shapes, which he pinned up on his studio’s white walls. He adjusted them into a series of
‘perfect’ compositions, later to be applied to the medium of lithography. The paper collages today
hang in the most prestigious museums around the world including the National Gallery of Art,
Washington, DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MOMA in NY and the Muse Matisse Nice.

Description At the end of Matisse’s life, it became increasingly difficult for him to paint at an easel. He learned
how to create paintings by way of collage instead. By cutting out shapes from pure colored sheets of
paper, he could “sculpt” his way to assembling a finished composition. In 1954, he worked with
Mourlot, the famous printer, to commemorate his finished collages or “cut outs” in the medium of
original lithography. These images are some of the most famous in modern art.

more strongly while still providing a beautiful backdrop for the energetic exchange between the
shapes. The Derriere le Miroir (DLM) series, originally an exhibition catalogue with lithograph
illustrations, was started by Aim Maeght, one of the Western world's most influential art dealers and

Description This print fully demonstrates Miro’s ability to create a simple yet engaging composition. The swirling
red mass on the one side is vibrant and voluminous which Miro juxtaposes with the minimalist black
dot. The piece is both still and quietly energetic with a pervading sense of an enigmatic dialogue
occurring between the two forms. The Derriere le Miroir (DLM) series, originally an exhibition

pieces in total, created in various media, among them lithography and pochoir. There were 275
complete folios published by Fernand Mourlot Press in 1957. 200 of these were signed and numbered.
This work of art is from no. 134 of 200. The folio is accompanied by a text written by Jaime Sabartes,
Picasso’s friend and personal secretary. For over 30 years Sabartes worked with Picasso, watching
him become the most celebrated artist of the modern era. This folio celebrates Picasso’s work from
1914-1948. Many of his important paintings and drawings were created by these master printers with
                   Picasso’s instruction.

Description The chudamani - “crest jewel” - of the Bhagavata Purana: such is the description of the five chapters
called the Rasa Panchadhyayi, which treat Krishna’s great rasa (dance). For they contain not only the
narrative of Krishna’s sport with his beloved gossip, but also moving passages which describe great
love - for Krishna disappears from the midst of his beloveds. The “damsels of Vraja” look confused
after loosing sight of their Krishna, after being lead into the forest by heated moonlight near the
                   Yamuna river.

This artwork is based on a painting done for a folio from a dispersed Bhagavata Purana series in the
                   Pahari school, ca. 1760-65.

Description This impressive scene depicting Palace life denotes a departure from the religious Hindu scenes that
were commonly painted before the Mughal Empire. In the Mughal studios, artists would work on
different parts of the painting. The elaborate borders would come last. In this case there are three
separate borders possibly painted by two to three different artists. The very outer border appears to
have a Turkish or Deccan influence. This image is embedded with gems - rubies, sapphires and

Medium Albumen Photograph Edition Only known proof Edition Size Publication Gallery Price: $2150 Description Constructed between 1176 - 1439, the Strasbourg Cathedral stood as the world’s tallest building from 1625 to 1874 and remained the tallest church in the world until 1880, just before this photograph was taken. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of late Gothic architecture in the world. In this peculiar photograph, the famous west front is sharply delineated and the details of thousands of stone figures appear clearly as demanded by the camera’s eye; however, upon closer examination a variance appears in line quality and proportion in the lower sections of photograph. The lower section of the cathedral, as well as the surrounding buildings and people appear to have been retouched by hand, most likely in oil colors or ink, which was becoming professional practice at the time. The tiny figures also appear to have been re-touched or hand painted to exaggerate the Details Strasbourg Cathedral handwritten below photograph on folio page. Medium Albumen Photograph Edition Only known proof Edition Size Publication Gallery Price: $1850 Description The Galerie des Batailles is located in the Palace of Versailles and contains large paintings depicting major military events in the history of France. Corinthian columns and marble busts of military heroes punctuate the solemn hall. The large cornice supports vault painted coffered entablatures. The duct midway through the hall contains 16 bronze tables inscribed with fourteen centuries of names of the princes, admirals, and military figures killed or wounded to death while fighting for their country. Without recognizing the hall or historical site itself, the seriality of the repeated white busts, columns, and rectangular paintings, against the dramatic perspective lines of the patterned ceiling and floor, create an interesting composition alone. Medium Albumen Photograph Edition Unnumbered Edition Size Publication Gallery Price: $2450 Description The Aphrodite of Milos, better known as the Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek marble statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Believed to depict Aphrodite (called Venus by the Romans), the Greek goddess of love and beauty, the statue is slightly larger than life size at 203 cm (6.7 ft) high, and on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Photography and sculpture have long enjoyed a close, complicit relationship. Both mediums seek permanence, through material presence and through photogenic testimony. Photographs of sculpture become even more desirable through the passage of time, as each medium acquires a special patina and a romantic detachment from the everyday context of their original capture. Artist Aubrey Beardsley BEA1008W03 (1872-1898), United Kingdom * New Acquisition Official Title How Morgan Lefay gave a shield to Sir Tristram (Morte d’Arthur Series) Unofficial Title Catalog Ref Year 18931894 Medium Woodcut Edition 27 Edition Size 750 Publication Gallery Price: $2400 Description This image features the villainess Morgan Lefay as she tricks Sir Tristram into bringing a shield to Camelot that she believes will reveal to King Arthur the love affair between his wife Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot. Beardsley uses the floral decoration in Morgan’s garments to create a twisting border around the image. Morgan’s figure appears to be a part of the border as it snakes and curls around Sir Tristram, reflecting her malicious ensnarement of the unknowing knight. Beardsley’s marvelous draftsmanship are wonderfully apparent in this image seen in the delicate yet detailed drawing of Sir Tristram’s garments and Morgan Lefay’s attractive form. Details Artist Notes At the end of 1892, Beardsley was approached by publisher J.M. Dent who asked him to illustrate a forthcoming publication of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. The commission was so large that it enabled Beardsley to leave his hated clerking job at an insurance agency. The illustrations were completed in 12 monthly installments and not completely finished until November of 1894. Artist Aubrey Beardsley BEA1008W01 (1872-1898), United Kingdom * New Acquisition Official Title Merlin taketh the child Arthur into his keeping (Morte d’Arthur Series) Unofficial Title Catalog Ref Year 189394 Medium Woodcut Edition 27 Edition Size 750 Publication Gallery Price: $2400 Description In this illustration from Le Morte D’Arthur, Beardsley depicts a scene from the beginning of the story explaining how Arthur came into Merlin’s keeping. Earlier in the narrative, Merlin had agreed to assist the King Uther Pendragon of England in both his war and matrimonial endeavors if he would give him his firstborn son as payment. Uther agreed and after his son was born he delivered him to Merlin. This print is a wonderful example of his ability to unify an image with decorative elements. The ornate botany are repeated in the border where dragon-like forms seem to peek through, perhaps a reminder of King Uther’s character. The unified elements of the scene help direct the viewer into the very heart of the woods where the main event is occurring. Gallery Price: $2250 Description Printed with permission from the Matisse Estate in 2003, these pochoirs were designed by Matisse in 1950. In 1948, Matisse promised Sister Jacques Marie, a young nun and nurse of the Foyer Lacordaire, that he would design a Chapel and began sketching it that same year. The Chapel stood as a monument to the spirit of Matisse, relying on colors and shapes. Some pochoir designs commemorate the costumes or dress worn by the bishops and clergy during Easter at the Chapel. Others were done to commemorate the stained glass windows of the Chapel, which were based on natural plants, cactus and flowers, of the region. Matisse writes; "For me, this chapel is the achievement of an entire life's work, the outcome of tremendous, difficult, sincere effort." Details Artist Notes Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 - November 3, 1954) was a French artist, noted for his use of color and his fluid, brilliant and original draughtsmanship. As a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but principally as a painter, Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s, he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.[1] His mastery of the expressive language of Frame Weight oz. He adjusted them into a series of ‘perfect’ compositions, later to be applied to the medium of lithography. Matisse writes; "For me, this chapel is the achievement of an entire life's work, the outcome of tremendous, difficult, sincere effort." He learned how to create paintings by way of collage instead. By cutting out shapes from pure colored sheets of paper, he could “sculpt” his way to assembling a finished composition. In 1954, he worked with Mourlot, the famous printer, to commemorate his finished collages or “cut outs” in the medium of original lithography. These images are some of the most famous in modern art.
