In what ways does your media product use,  develop or  challenge forms  and conventions  of real media  products? Evaluation – Question One
Front Cover I have used this masthead because I believe it suited the genre, of Rock/Punk, that I was trying to convey to suit my target audience. Also the intense imagery of the masthead then suits the name of the magazine; Intense! I chose this name because I wanted this name to convey the excited imagery of Rock/Punk and the impression of a crammed full magazine. I have also used a header in bright blue so that it stands out and to suit the conventions of other Rock magazines such as Kerrang! I have used a bar code with the date, issue number and website address written below as these are essential conventions of any magazine. I have used a flasher, in bright blue with white text, to attract my target audiences attention to a certain piece of information. I have used some cover lines as they appeared to be a common convention within other music magazines. However, I have not used many cover lines because of my influence from Kerrang! Magazine. I have used two smaller images to make my page appear predominantly image led in order to suit my target audiences preferences. I have also done this as an influence from my research that other music magazines also do this. I have tilted them to make them stand out. I have used a footer to comply with the traditional codes and conventions of a magazine and also to add more information suited to my target audience. I have also used bright blue with white text to attract attention. I have used a full length photo for my main image challenging the traditional codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have done this because I wanted to show the whole of their action as their action and poses relate to the genre, Rock/Punk, of my magazine. I have positioned the image in front of the masthead to again create a predominantly image led page but also to comply with other music magazines. I have used rule of thirds to follow my research of the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have used a white background, because of my research into the backgrounds that Kerrang! magazine uses and because of the fact that I believed there was a lot going on, on my page already and so any other background may have made my page look too cramped and off putting. For my house style I have chosen 4 colours; Black, White, Blue and Purple. I chose to stick to this colour scheme because the colours Black and White are gender neutral and the colour blue is stereotypically suited towards males with  the colour purple being stereotypically suited towards females. I have positioned the name of the band in black and white to suit my house style but also in front of the main image to stand out so that those who know the band immediately recognise this and for those who don’t know the band it will stand out to them. I have also positioned it like this, with a small caption underneath, as a result from my research into Kerrang! magazine. I also used this font to suit my Rock/Punk genre and my target audience.
I have again used my masthead at the top of the contents page to identify the page, show consistency and to follow the codes and conventions of other music magazines. It is again in black and white to suit my house style. I have then displayed this  and other information on a blue banner shape  to suit my colour scheme but also as an influence form my research into Kerrang! magazine. Contents Page I have displayed an editorial, in a certain way,  on the contents page  as an influence from my research into Kerrang! magazine. I have also used this to make it more personal to my target audience. I have used a medium close up for my main image again following my research into Kerrang! magazine. I also used a gradient behind the image due to my research. I have used two smaller images below to show the content of the magazine to entice my target audience into reading further. I have also used these extra images to create an image led page because that was the preferences of my target audience, from my earlier research. I then put the page numbers onto all of the images so that they are easy to find within my magazine and to follow the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have included the issue number and date at the top of the magazine as it is to show consistency and to comply with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have displayed the credits for those responsible for the photos because it is an important and consistent convention of most magazines. I have split my contents up into appropriate sections with headings to clearly suggest what will be included in that section. I have used blue text on a black background for the headings to suit my colour scheme and so that they stand out. I have then used black text for a subheading underneath to suit my house style and give further information. I have then occasionally written a caption under the subheading, in black to suit my house style, to give further information that will make my target audience want to read further. I have displayed the page numbers in purple to also suit my colour scheme and as a result from my research into Kerrang! magazine (as they used a consistent page number colour also). I have clearly stated the word ‘contents’ at the top of the page so that it is easily understandable what this page should include. I have displayed it in an appropriate black font to suit my house style, Rock/Punk genre and target audience, I have also displayed it to comply with the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have placed an advertisement/footer at the bottom of my contents encouraging my target audience to subscribe to my magazine, However, here I am challenging the codes and conventions of normal music magazines as  this is not a consistent feature of most music magazines; although I did see it featured in a different format on Kerrang! contents and so thought it would be good to feature it in a more noticeable way on my contents to attract my target audience. I have used an informal and humorous register/tone to relate to the age aspect of my target audience and the stereotype of the Rock/Punk genre. I have used rule of thirds to comply with the codes and conventions of other magazines.
Double Page Spread I have used the same header for my double page spread as the band name on the front cover so that it is clear who is being interviewed and to show consistency like other music magazines from my previous research. I have used a stand first to comply with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I made it a little bigger than the rest of the article  so that it stands  out and I have used electric blue in between the black text to  again make it stand out and attract my target audience but also to suit my colour scheme. I have used two extra images as well as the main image to convey an image led page as this was a preference of my target audience from my research. I have included extra information at the bottom of the article to encourage my target audience to read further on in the magazine. This was from the influence of my research into Kerrang! magazine. It is in electric blue to stand out but also to suit my house style. I have used a drop capital and in electric blue to draw attention to the article but also to suit my house style and to comply with the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have used three, average length columns, in a question and answer style article as a result of my research into Kerrang! magazine. The columns are not too long to engage my target audience as this was their preference from my previous research. I have written the question in purple so that it is clear as the question and the answer in black to suit my colour scheme and to relate to my target audience. Also the people from the band names, answering  the question, are in bold black to stand out so that it is clear that this is not part of their answer. Also all of this complies with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have used  rule of thirds to  show a consistent house style and to follow the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have used  a consistent informal and humorous register/tone to suit my target audience. I have displayed credits for those who are responsible for the photos on this page to suit my house style and to comply with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have displayed the page number here on my dps to suit my house style and to follow the codes and conventions of other magazines. Main Image: - Here I have used a full length shot on top of a gradient which uses my colour scheme to show consistency, following the codes and conventions of Kerrang! magazine. However, I have challenged codes and conventions of, other music magazines, because I have used an image only slightly different from my main front cover  image because it was not possible for me to get a different photo due to the fact that some of the people were no longer available to be part of another photo shoot. I also displayed the questions and names in bold to comply with the codes and conventions from my research of Kerrang! Magazine. I have used a by line here to conform with the codes and conventions of other magazines and to suit my house style. I have used  an ‘Intense! Exclusive’ caption at the top of the page as an influence from the conventions of Kerrang! Magazine.

How this media product uses and challenges conventions of real magazines

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Evaluation – Question One
  • 2. Front Cover I have used this masthead because I believe it suited the genre, of Rock/Punk, that I was trying to convey to suit my target audience. Also the intense imagery of the masthead then suits the name of the magazine; Intense! I chose this name because I wanted this name to convey the excited imagery of Rock/Punk and the impression of a crammed full magazine. I have also used a header in bright blue so that it stands out and to suit the conventions of other Rock magazines such as Kerrang! I have used a bar code with the date, issue number and website address written below as these are essential conventions of any magazine. I have used a flasher, in bright blue with white text, to attract my target audiences attention to a certain piece of information. I have used some cover lines as they appeared to be a common convention within other music magazines. However, I have not used many cover lines because of my influence from Kerrang! Magazine. I have used two smaller images to make my page appear predominantly image led in order to suit my target audiences preferences. I have also done this as an influence from my research that other music magazines also do this. I have tilted them to make them stand out. I have used a footer to comply with the traditional codes and conventions of a magazine and also to add more information suited to my target audience. I have also used bright blue with white text to attract attention. I have used a full length photo for my main image challenging the traditional codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have done this because I wanted to show the whole of their action as their action and poses relate to the genre, Rock/Punk, of my magazine. I have positioned the image in front of the masthead to again create a predominantly image led page but also to comply with other music magazines. I have used rule of thirds to follow my research of the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have used a white background, because of my research into the backgrounds that Kerrang! magazine uses and because of the fact that I believed there was a lot going on, on my page already and so any other background may have made my page look too cramped and off putting. For my house style I have chosen 4 colours; Black, White, Blue and Purple. I chose to stick to this colour scheme because the colours Black and White are gender neutral and the colour blue is stereotypically suited towards males with the colour purple being stereotypically suited towards females. I have positioned the name of the band in black and white to suit my house style but also in front of the main image to stand out so that those who know the band immediately recognise this and for those who don’t know the band it will stand out to them. I have also positioned it like this, with a small caption underneath, as a result from my research into Kerrang! magazine. I also used this font to suit my Rock/Punk genre and my target audience.
  • 3. I have again used my masthead at the top of the contents page to identify the page, show consistency and to follow the codes and conventions of other music magazines. It is again in black and white to suit my house style. I have then displayed this and other information on a blue banner shape to suit my colour scheme but also as an influence form my research into Kerrang! magazine. Contents Page I have displayed an editorial, in a certain way, on the contents page as an influence from my research into Kerrang! magazine. I have also used this to make it more personal to my target audience. I have used a medium close up for my main image again following my research into Kerrang! magazine. I also used a gradient behind the image due to my research. I have used two smaller images below to show the content of the magazine to entice my target audience into reading further. I have also used these extra images to create an image led page because that was the preferences of my target audience, from my earlier research. I then put the page numbers onto all of the images so that they are easy to find within my magazine and to follow the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have included the issue number and date at the top of the magazine as it is to show consistency and to comply with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have displayed the credits for those responsible for the photos because it is an important and consistent convention of most magazines. I have split my contents up into appropriate sections with headings to clearly suggest what will be included in that section. I have used blue text on a black background for the headings to suit my colour scheme and so that they stand out. I have then used black text for a subheading underneath to suit my house style and give further information. I have then occasionally written a caption under the subheading, in black to suit my house style, to give further information that will make my target audience want to read further. I have displayed the page numbers in purple to also suit my colour scheme and as a result from my research into Kerrang! magazine (as they used a consistent page number colour also). I have clearly stated the word ‘contents’ at the top of the page so that it is easily understandable what this page should include. I have displayed it in an appropriate black font to suit my house style, Rock/Punk genre and target audience, I have also displayed it to comply with the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have placed an advertisement/footer at the bottom of my contents encouraging my target audience to subscribe to my magazine, However, here I am challenging the codes and conventions of normal music magazines as this is not a consistent feature of most music magazines; although I did see it featured in a different format on Kerrang! contents and so thought it would be good to feature it in a more noticeable way on my contents to attract my target audience. I have used an informal and humorous register/tone to relate to the age aspect of my target audience and the stereotype of the Rock/Punk genre. I have used rule of thirds to comply with the codes and conventions of other magazines.
  • 4. Double Page Spread I have used the same header for my double page spread as the band name on the front cover so that it is clear who is being interviewed and to show consistency like other music magazines from my previous research. I have used a stand first to comply with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I made it a little bigger than the rest of the article so that it stands out and I have used electric blue in between the black text to again make it stand out and attract my target audience but also to suit my colour scheme. I have used two extra images as well as the main image to convey an image led page as this was a preference of my target audience from my research. I have included extra information at the bottom of the article to encourage my target audience to read further on in the magazine. This was from the influence of my research into Kerrang! magazine. It is in electric blue to stand out but also to suit my house style. I have used a drop capital and in electric blue to draw attention to the article but also to suit my house style and to comply with the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have used three, average length columns, in a question and answer style article as a result of my research into Kerrang! magazine. The columns are not too long to engage my target audience as this was their preference from my previous research. I have written the question in purple so that it is clear as the question and the answer in black to suit my colour scheme and to relate to my target audience. Also the people from the band names, answering the question, are in bold black to stand out so that it is clear that this is not part of their answer. Also all of this complies with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have used rule of thirds to show a consistent house style and to follow the codes and conventions of other magazines. I have used a consistent informal and humorous register/tone to suit my target audience. I have displayed credits for those who are responsible for the photos on this page to suit my house style and to comply with the codes and conventions of other music magazines. I have displayed the page number here on my dps to suit my house style and to follow the codes and conventions of other magazines. Main Image: - Here I have used a full length shot on top of a gradient which uses my colour scheme to show consistency, following the codes and conventions of Kerrang! magazine. However, I have challenged codes and conventions of, other music magazines, because I have used an image only slightly different from my main front cover image because it was not possible for me to get a different photo due to the fact that some of the people were no longer available to be part of another photo shoot. I also displayed the questions and names in bold to comply with the codes and conventions from my research of Kerrang! Magazine. I have used a by line here to conform with the codes and conventions of other magazines and to suit my house style. I have used an ‘Intense! Exclusive’ caption at the top of the page as an influence from the conventions of Kerrang! Magazine.
