Romanian Intellectual Feast at Bloomington
On March 30-31, Indiana University hosted the fifth edition of the Ro-
manian Studies Conference. Irina Costache and Ruxandra Pop - current
Fulbright Grantees - and the American Fulbright Alumni Cristina Bejan
and M. Benjamin Thorne presented their work at the conference.
Professor Dennis Deletant, the key note speaker of the conference,
shown his interest on the research conducted by the younger genera-
tion of scholars focused on Romanian issues. “I am glad to see such a
young gathering of post-graduates working in the field of Romanian
studies, who had the opportunity to access the archives in ways in which some of us in the older gen-
eration didn’t have, and the fact that they are using that access to such good effect, opening our eyes
to a more nuanced understanding of Romanian realities which are sometimes glossed over, especially
in the press. The whole series of Romanian studies conferences in Indiana consolidates the view that
Romania is an extremely complex country, one which always offers surprises”.
"Like the past events that we had, this conference was an intellectual feast where scholars had a great
deal to share and offer to each other in terms of making different connections between disciplines, be-
tween topics and of course, between generations, and in terms of the ways in which Romania is a rich
site for research and scholarly endeavors", said professor Maria Bucur-Deckard, John W. Hill Chair of
European History, Department of History and Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, one of the
organizers of the conference.
