5. Humboldt
This viewpoint is located in the road between La Orotava and Santa Úrsula. It was in
construction for 11 years and it has just opened to the public.
It was built in honour of Alexander Von Humboldt a very famous German explorer of
the 18th century. He saw the landscape and he thought that it was fascinating.
A lot of tourists of many countries come here to see the view or to drink or eat
something because there are two restaurants. There is a shop and an exposition room
too.
This is what you can see from there and this very big mountain at the bottom is El
Teide, the highest mountain in Spain.

13. WHAT IS MULTICULTURALISM?
Multiculturalism is the coexistence with
other cultures.
I think that this has to be in harmony and the
most important fact of a multicultural society
is the respect and tolerance to each other.
14. Multiculturalism in the world
Immigration gives us the opportunity to meet people from other
countries. But if we want to know more about them we need to
open our eyes, our ears and our hearts to listen to them and to
try to understand their habits and to learn from each other.
Those are really nice words but actually it does not happen so
easily and many times people from other countries do not feel
at home due to many reasons: we discriminate them,
sometimes we do not show interest in getting to know them, it
.
is not easy to find jobs, sometimes religion cause problems (at
school sometimes muslin girls have problems about wearing
their veil).
15. There are rich immigrants and poor immigrants and
this makes a big difference when we speak about
them. It is sad to say it but it is true. Most of our
football players are from other countries but those
are different, we admire them.
In Tenerife we have lot of immigrants in a no good
position, most of them from South America, and
Africa. Many Africans have arrived in very little boats
called “pateras”, they have no papers. We have special
houses to host them. The ones under 18 go to schools
and are given pocket money. They normally have
problems to integrate.
In Tenerife schools, in general, do not have special
programs to teach them Spanish and that makes
them difficult to attend the lessons and so they
get bored and have bad behaviour.
16. Personally, I live quite apart from all that until this project.
People here say that immigrants take our jobs, but that is
not really true. They don´t mind working anywhere and we
normally do. We think that Tenerife is ours and they are
just here because they want, so why to make efforts to get
to know them? To care about them, their problems,
worries,..? That is the politicians´ duty. We just want to
live well and we do not care much… until we get involved
in projects like this one that makes us think about it.
If we have a look we can see countries are made up of
inmigrants and thanks to them we have had the
opportunity to eat their food, to listen to their music, to
see their dances, to know different ways of thinking and
living, they are helping the country to grow in many
different aspects.
18. Multicultural Societies.
Nowadays almost every European country is a multicultural society. The
country with more foreigners in Europe is Germany.
There are many different races among us and I feel happier now that I
have got closer to this subject.

They raise the funds by the members of the library

the United Kingdom) came to visit the library,
because it is the biggest English library outside
