How can we classify a
star, what are the traits
of a star?
What is
Astronomy? is a natural science that studies celestial
objects and phenomena. It uses mathematics,
physics, and chemistry in order to explain
their origin and evolution. Objects of interest
includes planets, moons, stars, nebulae,
galaxies, and comets.
Spectroscopy is the
study of the interaction
of light and matter.
Many types of
spectroscopy rely on
the
ability of atoms and
molecules to absorb or
emit electromagnetic
(EM) radiation.
The Hubble Space Telescope is a
space telescope that was launched
into low Earth orbit in 1990 and
remains in operation. It was not the
first space telescope, but it is one of
the largest and most versatile,
renowned both as a vital research
tool and as a public relations boon
for astronomy.
Star
Formation
WHAT IS A STAR?
A star develops from a
giant, slowly rotating cloud
that is made up entirely or
almost entirely of
hydrogen and helium.
According to NASA, this
collapsing material grows
hotter and denser, forming
a ball-shaped protostar.
Sirius Star
Sirius is known for being
the brightest star in
the night sky and is
nearly twice as bright as
the next brightest star,
Canopus
with a magnitude of -
0.72
Sirius Star
Sirius is also known as
the 'Dog star' or Sirius A
because it is part of the
constellation
Canis Major, which is
Latin for
“the greater dog.”
FACTS ABOUT
OUR TOPIC
Constellations is
imaginary patterns of
the stars.
Constellation : Five constellations in the
Northern Hemisphere
that Circle the pole star
(Polaris).
Circumpolar :
How are constellations
named? Most of the
constellation names we know
came from the ancient Middle
Eastern, Greek, and Roman
cultures.
How are constellations
named? :
Examples of
constellations:
One constellation tradition
is the western zodiac,
which is made up of 12
constellations: Aries,
Taurus, Gemini, Cancer,
Leo, Virgo, Libra,
Scorpio, Sagittarius,
Capricorn, Aquarius and
Pisces.
Examples of constellations:
Aquarius
Latin word for
“Water
Carrier” or
“Cup Carrier”
Examples of constellations:
Aries
Aries
Latin
name is
for “ram”
Examples of constellations:
Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia, in
Greek
mythology,
was a vain
Queen who
often boasted
about her
Beauty
Examples of constellations:
Orion
Orion was a
massive,
supernaturally
gifted hunter
who has a son
named
Poseidon.
The North Star or Pole Star –
aka Polaris – is famous for
holding nearly still in our sky,
while the entire northern sky
moves around it. That's
because it's located nearly at
the north celestial pole, the
point around which the entire
northern sky turns.
(TAKE NOTES)
What Polaris is :
This name comes from the Latin
“Stella Polaris,” which means
“Pole Star”. In Ancient Greece,
the North Star was called
“Kynosoura,” translated as “the
dog's tail.”
(TAKE NOTES)
What Polaris is :
A spectrograph sometimes called a
spectroscope or spectrometer breaks
the light from a single material into its
component colors the way a prism
splits white light into a rainbow. It
records this spectrum, which allows
scientists to analyze the light and
discover properties of the material
interacting with it.
Take down notes
^^
Characteristics
of Stars
Brightness
There are two characteristics define brightness :
Luminosity and Magnitude
Luminosity is the amount of light that a star
radiates.
The size of the star and its surface temperature
determine its luminosity.
Brightness
Brightness (apparent magnitude)
Brightness
Brightness
Apparent- brightness as seen
from earth
Absolute-brightness the star
would have if it were at a
standard distance from earth
The parallax angle is the angle between the
Earth at one time of year, and the Earth six
months later, as measured from a nearby star.
Astronomers use this angle to find the distance
from the Earth to that star.
Measuring Distance
Color
Stars have a different colors white, blue,
yellow, orange, and red. The color indicates
the star's temperature in its photosphere, the
layer where the star emits most of its visible
light.
Color
Color is a way that we describe an object based
on the way that it reflects or emits light. Your
eye can see different colors because a part of
your eye called the retina is sensitive to
different wavelengths of light.
Color
They may contain the mass of one or two Suns
but are often just 20 to 40 km in diameter.
White dwarf stars are a bit bigger - often
similar in size to our planet Earth. The largest
supergiant stars can be more than 1500 times
larger than our Sun. This makes them over
2,000 million km across.
SIZE
Scientists use the Kelvin
scale because it is an
absolute measure of
temperature and is
directly related to kinetic
energy and volume.
Surface
Temperature
The surface temperature
of a star depends in part
on its mass and affects its
brightness and color.
Surface
Temperature
SIZE
Astronomers represent the mass
of a star in terms of the solar
mass, the mass
of our sun. For instance, Alpha
Centauri A is 1.08 solar masses.
Mass
Alpha Centauri includes a pair of bright
stars that orbit each other a yellow,
sunlike star named Alpha Centauri A
and a redder star named Alpha
Centauri B. These two stars are about 4.4
light-years from the Sun. They complete
one orbit about every 80 years.
Stars with similar masses might not be similar
in size because they have different densities.
For instance, Sirius B is roughly the same mass
as the sun, but is 90,000 times as dense, and
so is only a fiftieth its diameter. The mass of a
star affects surface temperature.
Mass
Sirius B is one of the largest known white
dwarf stars and is 10,000 times dimmer
than Sirius. It's so dim that astronomers
couldn't estimate its mass until 2005 by using
data from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Sirius B is about 10,000 times fainter than
Sirius A. The white dwarf's feeble light makes
it a challenge to study, because its light is
swamped in the glare of its brighter
companion as seen from telescopes on Earth.
GENERALIZATION
Let’s watch and Learn!!
as you can see Stars are so
important to us because they have
helped humans navigate through
earth,

INFUSION
By looking for patterns, the stars and
locations can be much easier to spot.
The constellations had uses in ancient
times. They were used to help keep track
of the calendar.

  • 5. Let’s watch a Video! Characteristics of Stars Title: adventures in ISTEM Owner of the Video:
  • 6. What color have the coolest temperature? 01. Red stars. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. 02. -Color -Size -Brightness -Mass How can we classify a star, what are the traits of a star?
  • 7. What is Astronomy? is a natural science that studies celestial objects and phenomena. It uses mathematics, physics, and chemistry in order to explain their origin and evolution. Objects of interest includes planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and comets. Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction of light and matter. Many types of spectroscopy rely on the ability of atoms and molecules to absorb or emit electromagnetic (EM) radiation.
  • 8. The Hubble Space Telescope is a space telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation. It was not the first space telescope, but it is one of the largest and most versatile, renowned both as a vital research tool and as a public relations boon for astronomy.
  • 10. WHAT IS A STAR? A star develops from a giant, slowly rotating cloud that is made up entirely or almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. According to NASA, this collapsing material grows hotter and denser, forming a ball-shaped protostar.
  • 11. Sirius Star Sirius is known for being the brightest star in the night sky and is nearly twice as bright as the next brightest star, Canopus with a magnitude of - 0.72
  • 12. Sirius Star Sirius is also known as the 'Dog star' or Sirius A because it is part of the constellation Canis Major, which is Latin for “the greater dog.”
  • 13. FACTS ABOUT OUR TOPIC Constellations is imaginary patterns of the stars. Constellation : Five constellations in the Northern Hemisphere that Circle the pole star (Polaris). Circumpolar :
  • 14. How are constellations named? Most of the constellation names we know came from the ancient Middle Eastern, Greek, and Roman cultures. How are constellations named? :
  • 15. Examples of constellations: One constellation tradition is the western zodiac, which is made up of 12 constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
  • 16. Examples of constellations: Aquarius Latin word for “Water Carrier” or “Cup Carrier”
  • 18. Examples of constellations: Cassiopeia Cassiopeia, in Greek mythology, was a vain Queen who often boasted about her Beauty
  • 19. Examples of constellations: Orion Orion was a massive, supernaturally gifted hunter who has a son named Poseidon.
  • 20. The North Star or Pole Star – aka Polaris – is famous for holding nearly still in our sky, while the entire northern sky moves around it. That's because it's located nearly at the north celestial pole, the point around which the entire northern sky turns. (TAKE NOTES) What Polaris is :
  • 21. This name comes from the Latin “Stella Polaris,” which means “Pole Star”. In Ancient Greece, the North Star was called “Kynosoura,” translated as “the dog's tail.” (TAKE NOTES) What Polaris is :
  • 22. A spectrograph sometimes called a spectroscope or spectrometer breaks the light from a single material into its component colors the way a prism splits white light into a rainbow. It records this spectrum, which allows scientists to analyze the light and discover properties of the material interacting with it.
  • 24. Brightness There are two characteristics define brightness : Luminosity and Magnitude Luminosity is the amount of light that a star radiates. The size of the star and its surface temperature determine its luminosity.
  • 28. Brightness Apparent- brightness as seen from earth Absolute-brightness the star would have if it were at a standard distance from earth
  • 29. The parallax angle is the angle between the Earth at one time of year, and the Earth six months later, as measured from a nearby star. Astronomers use this angle to find the distance from the Earth to that star. Measuring Distance
  • 30. Color Stars have a different colors white, blue, yellow, orange, and red. The color indicates the star's temperature in its photosphere, the layer where the star emits most of its visible light.
  • 31. Color Color is a way that we describe an object based on the way that it reflects or emits light. Your eye can see different colors because a part of your eye called the retina is sensitive to different wavelengths of light.
  • 32. Color
  • 33. They may contain the mass of one or two Suns but are often just 20 to 40 km in diameter. White dwarf stars are a bit bigger - often similar in size to our planet Earth. The largest supergiant stars can be more than 1500 times larger than our Sun. This makes them over 2,000 million km across. SIZE
  • 34. Scientists use the Kelvin scale because it is an absolute measure of temperature and is directly related to kinetic energy and volume. Surface Temperature
  • 35. The surface temperature of a star depends in part on its mass and affects its brightness and color. Surface Temperature
  • 36. SIZE
  • 37. Astronomers represent the mass of a star in terms of the solar mass, the mass of our sun. For instance, Alpha Centauri A is 1.08 solar masses. Mass
  • 38. Alpha Centauri includes a pair of bright stars that orbit each other a yellow, sunlike star named Alpha Centauri A and a redder star named Alpha Centauri B. These two stars are about 4.4 light-years from the Sun. They complete one orbit about every 80 years.
  • 39. Stars with similar masses might not be similar in size because they have different densities. For instance, Sirius B is roughly the same mass as the sun, but is 90,000 times as dense, and so is only a fiftieth its diameter. The mass of a star affects surface temperature. Mass
  • 40. Sirius B is one of the largest known white dwarf stars and is 10,000 times dimmer than Sirius. It's so dim that astronomers couldn't estimate its mass until 2005 by using data from the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • 41. Sirius B is about 10,000 times fainter than Sirius A. The white dwarf's feeble light makes it a challenge to study, because its light is swamped in the glare of its brighter companion as seen from telescopes on Earth.
