This document discusses methods for analyzing power consumption data to optimize reactive compensation in medium voltage networks. Key steps include collecting measurements over a representative period of time using a low sampling frequency to observe load fluctuations while avoiding interference from existing capacitor banks. A histogram is then generated from the data to roughly assess the probability distribution of reactive power consumption. This allows identifying appropriate capacitor bank sizes to maintain a power factor above 0.95 for over 98% of the time while avoiding potential issues like parallel resonance and harmonic distortion.
