In Lumila, everyone cooperates with each other for the benefit of the whole enterprise. The
core business practice in Lumila operates as a family, connected closely with each other in
every day’s duties. As an efficient team, they communicate directly and promptly.
Complete all the project and mission and fulfill the best output.
Trade Strategies
As one of B2B companies, Lumila concentrate on establishing a good relationship with the
key clients in France. Providing products with high quality and customized installations,
Lumila has successfully built up customer loyalty and raised reputation in LED lighting
industry.
Product Overview
Lumila is specialized in LED solutions for the industrial lighting, architectural lighting and
customer project when demand. Throughout years’ experience in research, Lumila
developed a range of LED products for road works, ballasting works, maintenance works,
inspections, shop floors, tooling and electrical stations.
Industrial
Pipeline
The Pipeline® is a LED lighting tube with magnets, providing different choices in input
voltage, length, luminous flux, beam angle, color and temperature etc. This Pipeline is
made to meet the demand of interior and exterior applications in some extreme working
conditions. Consequently, it has been widely used in aviation, railway, construction and
transportation industries, especially for underground maintenance by ERDF, ballasting
works by SNCF etc.
Advantages of Pipeline include shock resistant (IK08), waterproof (IP65) and lifespan
(L70), which is up to 35,000 hours. Basically, three types of models can be seen in Pipeline
series. They are Pipeline 17, Pipeline 20 and Pipeline HP (High Power), which can all be
adaptable with the above specifications provide the best LED lighting solution to the clients.
Portable Pipeline
Portable Pipeline® is Lumila’s patented lighting system, composed of a linear LED tube
and battery units which can last up to 10 hours depending on use. Increasing the mobility
when working at night, Portable Pipeline is especially used in railway, as well as
underground work. It contain the same qualities as the Pipeline, shock resistant (IK08) and
waterproof (IP65).
The difference between black and yellow Portable Pipeline is mainly the charging time.
Yellow model improve the time from 4h30 to 2h30.
PEPC
The PEPC (Pipeline Collective Protection Equipment) is conceived to meet the need of a
complete security signaling system for ERDF. Composed of a high power tube and an
amber tube, it can provide powerful lighting and emit lighting and sound signals at the
same time. In general, the PEPC is used in maintenance works and all types of applications
that need signaling for the workers as well as for passers-by.
K2
As a high power projector, the K2 give a sufficient luminous efficiency up to 10 meters for
indoor and outdoor applications. Thus, the K2 is typically used for warehouses, shop floors,
and monument facade lighting. It is adjustable and configurable in mono/bi color or RGB,
with or without a lens.
Waïmea
As a high rendering index lighting, Waïmea is a LED lighting tube with a mounting system
which can be adjustable easily according to the length of a tube. Similar to the above
products, the qualities include shock resistant (IK08) and waterproof (IP65). Ideal solution
for the industrial sectors, Waïmea is also generally used in aviation, railway, construction
and transportation industries.
Building
Chantilly Tube
Equipped with a continuous line connection system, the Chantilly Tube is designed for
large-scale lighting, for instance in monument lighting (interior and exterior). Besides,
Chantilly is equipped with a system permitting the connection of the tubes in a continuous
line (waterproof connectors). Therefore, it ensures uniform lumination all along the desired
surface.
Customized Service
In addition to the key products, Lumila involve in various projects. Its expert team fulfill
the demands of clients from scratch. Not only designing but also manufacturing the final
products. From development to manufacturing, Lumila satisfy every high-standard
customer.
Bass Lighting Project
Joined Guitare Garage lighting project, Lumila combined a guitar with LED lighting, which
can change colors and patterns along with the music.
Gush Concert
Participation in a project with Martin Rossi and Christophe Vermand of Collectif Or
Normes, Lumila created a wonderful lighting decoration for the Gush concert.
SituationAnalysis
Marketing Scale
As this figure shows, LED market penetration between 2010 and 2020. In 2015, we can
predict that the LED marketing scale will keep increasing steadily.
This marketing is considerably huge, according to a report of European LED Quality
Charter 2011, “At an estimated market size of around 73 billion US dollars, general lighting
was the largest segment in 2011. The general lighting market is expected to exceed 100
billion US dollars by 2020, while the automotive lighting market is expected to rake in
revenues of just under 25 billion US dollars in 2020, thus accounting for almost 20 percent
of total market revenue.” The values have been converted from euros to US dollars at a rate
of 1 EUR = 1.323 US dollars (correct as of December 31, 2012).
External Factors
The euro’s decline has raised the price of imports. Devaluation of a currency means the
more money will be pied. Furthermore, according to the governmental regulation, when
selling the final product in European Union, it could not be added any tax (HT: tax free,
exclusive of VAT), which means without the tax we pied for some components. The only
way to solve this issue would be applying for a document, déclaration d'echange de biens,
so that a company can get its compensation after.
On the other hand, as we can see in the figure below, the rate tendency of the exchange rate
of Euro to New Taiwan Dollars has declined gradually since 2015, which means Lumila
has to spend more money in importing some products from Taiwan.
Competitions
LED lighting is still a future trend, for consuming less energy than traditional incandescent
bulbs but perform better than ever. Many new companies entered this profitable market,
however, not many of them could last more than three years. Generally speaking, there are
already numerous international key players, for instance, GE Lighting, Osram, Philips,
General Electric and Siemens.
However, all these giant company are not the competitor to Lumila, because Lumilla is
focus on a niche market, where has the biggest benefit and not so many competitors yet. As
a B2B company, Lumila import different components mainly from Taiwan, and then their
powerful team assemble them into a high-end product for the customers. Consequently,
there are few competitors for Lumila. They are small but strong, knowing who are their aim
and continue in designing and researching for a better LED lighting solution for every
client.
Future Overview
New Products
Beside the existing products, Lumila proposes a robust backpack for their product, a
portable pipeline. This is a project cooperating with SNCF, fabricating a backpack to put 4
sets of lamps inside. This way, the workers can work long time and use the lamps much
more easily at night. The pictures following are the first version of design, and we are now
contacting a German company, Ergon, for redesigning a model of backpack, BC3.
Outlook for the Future
Lumila has already built its reputation in France and also started its business in Germany
with Deutsche Bahn, a German railway company. In the previous years, Lumila maintain a
good relationship with two organizations, they are CCFA (Chambre de commerce francaise
Allemagne) and CCFN (Chambre de Commerce France-Norvefienne). With their help,
Lumila can be known by more local companies, thus seeking for the opportunities in the
near future.
Conclusion
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” A small company can
always create miracles with the right people. As an assistant in administration and
communication, I discovered some delicate interactions between people. Not only the two
founders have different ways of leadership, but also can be seen the four different
departments. Generally speaking, we can see the methods of communications changes
between different types of people. There are nothing good or bad of that, only if it is
balanced. I truly believe this small company can make its own way and expand to more
European countries.
Experience Sharing
Intern Experience
Intern is an opportunity for us to use what we have learnt at ITI. However, we cannot
guarantee what kinds of intern experiences that we could have. Even though I chose to go
to France instead of being arranged by the school, I am still wondering would it be different
if I just followed like others. Indeed, it could turn out to be a totally different story.
Nevertheless, experience itself cannot be compared. We should define the meaning of our
intern experience ourselves. For me, having internship in France is the best choice ever. I
build up my confidence again, where I lost long time ago.
Being alone in a new environment has taught me how to be more independent. I can finally
not being compared with peer, because I feel that I am unique in France. The fact is I am
the only person who speak Chinese in Lumila. I understand a little bit French so that we can
get into my colleagues much more easily. Besides, having visited France twice makes me
can focusing on work instead of planning traveling all the time. For me, my internship is
like a journey, a journey of finding myself. I put myself in an unfamiliar environment and
try to practice my French every day either listening or speaking. Also, I observed how do
people here working. I believe atmosphere is important when working and what you work
with every day really matters. The most unbelievable thing for me is that everybody has to
greet each other with a kiss on the face (faire bises) or shake hands before getting to work.
I understand clearly that my mission is to help this small company become better, even just
a little bit, that would be amazing. Once I made the decision, I followed my heart and I
sacrificed my time to do every little thing with my whole heart. Nevertheless, I am not
always satisfied what I have done. My langue and the ability to express restrain my
performance. Perhaps there are something that we could not change so easily. Everything
takes time and practice, but I always believe I am a lucky girl. The colleagues are so nice to
me, and the most wonderful thing is working with my supervisor. Polite, hard-working, and
always kind to everyone. She is the one I want to be in the near future.
“Get busy living, or get busy dying.” To be honest, my intern is not always interesting. I
often discover that I am lost because I have no idea who I am and why I am here. At the
end, I know the biggest problem of me is I don’t have a courage of keeping asking question.
I give up easily sometimes. If I do nothing but waiting, the only thing happen is I am
getting older and older. Then, why not just leave? Human is a strange creature, we could
not tolerant the feelings of failure once and once again. So I tried self-learning, thus I knew
I improve and I am better than yesterday. I may not be able to help all my collogues in
Lumila, but I smile and greet everybody warmly. I cheer them up so that we make Lumila
become better and better every day. To conclude, merci beaucoup for everyone who have
spent the time with me. You are all become an unforgetable moment in the life forever.
Suggestions
I really appreciate the ITI offering me the liberty to organize my internship in Paris, France.
The process of preparing is easier than I thought. However, I know exactly the cost behind
of freedom, which means I have to take the whole responsibility for myself. From
contacting the company to organize the transportation and homestay, they are just the
beginning of challenges. Nevertheless, I have to thanks many help and support from my
friends and family, so that I could finally walk to the end of my internship.
Perhaps in the near future, there would be more and more ITI students choose to do the
same thing as me. On the other hand, ITI can invite some alumnus from relating fields or
countries to give them advice. I believe it can really make the intern experience special and
priceless.

External Factors The euro’s decline has raised the price of imports. Devaluation of a currency means the more money will be pied. Furthermore, according to the governmental regulation, when selling the final product in European Union, it could not be added any tax (HT: tax free, exclusive of VAT), which means without the tax we pied for some components. The only way to solve this issue would be applying for a document, déclaration d'echange de biens, so that a company can get its compensation after. On the other hand, as we can see in the figure below, the rate tendency of the exchange rate of Euro to New Taiwan Dollars has declined gradually since 2015, which means Lumila has to spend more money in importing some products from Taiwan.
  • 11. Competitions LED lighting is still a future trend, for consuming less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs but perform better than ever. Many new companies entered this profitable market, however, not many of them could last more than three years. Generally speaking, there are already numerous international key players, for instance, GE Lighting, Osram, Philips, General Electric and Siemens. However, all these giant company are not the competitor to Lumila, because Lumilla is focus on a niche market, where has the biggest benefit and not so many competitors yet. As a B2B company, Lumila import different components mainly from Taiwan, and then their powerful team assemble them into a high-end product for the customers. Consequently, there are few competitors for Lumila. They are small but strong, knowing who are their aim and continue in designing and researching for a better LED lighting solution for every client.
  • 12. Future Overview New Products Beside the existing products, Lumila proposes a robust backpack for their product, a portable pipeline. This is a project cooperating with SNCF, fabricating a backpack to put 4 sets of lamps inside. This way, the workers can work long time and use the lamps much more easily at night. The pictures following are the first version of design, and we are now contacting a German company, Ergon, for redesigning a model of backpack, BC3. Outlook for the Future Lumila has already built its reputation in France and also started its business in Germany with Deutsche Bahn, a German railway company. In the previous years, Lumila maintain a good relationship with two organizations, they are CCFA (Chambre de commerce francaise Allemagne) and CCFN (Chambre de Commerce France-Norvefienne). With their help, Lumila can be known by more local companies, thus seeking for the opportunities in the near future. Conclusion “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” A small company can always create miracles with the right people. As an assistant in administration and communication, I discovered some delicate interactions between people. Not only the two founders have different ways of leadership, but also can be seen the four different departments. Generally speaking, we can see the methods of communications changes between different types of people. There are nothing good or bad of that, only if it is balanced. I truly believe this small company can make its own way and expand to more European countries.
  • 13. Experience Sharing Intern Experience Intern is an opportunity for us to use what we have learnt at ITI. However, we cannot guarantee what kinds of intern experiences that we could have. Even though I chose to go to France instead of being arranged by the school, I am still wondering would it be different if I just followed like others. Indeed, it could turn out to be a totally different story. Nevertheless, experience itself cannot be compared. We should define the meaning of our intern experience ourselves. For me, having internship in France is the best choice ever. I build up my confidence again, where I lost long time ago. Being alone in a new environment has taught me how to be more independent. I can finally not being compared with peer, because I feel that I am unique in France. The fact is I am the only person who speak Chinese in Lumila. I understand a little bit French so that we can get into my colleagues much more easily. Besides, having visited France twice makes me can focusing on work instead of planning traveling all the time. For me, my internship is like a journey, a journey of finding myself. I put myself in an unfamiliar environment and try to practice my French every day either listening or speaking. Also, I observed how do people here working. I believe atmosphere is important when working and what you work with every day really matters. The most unbelievable thing for me is that everybody has to greet each other with a kiss on the face (faire bises) or shake hands before getting to work. I understand clearly that my mission is to help this small company become better, even just a little bit, that would be amazing. Once I made the decision, I followed my heart and I sacrificed my time to do every little thing with my whole heart. Nevertheless, I am not always satisfied what I have done. My langue and the ability to express restrain my performance. Perhaps there are something that we could not change so easily. Everything takes time and practice, but I always believe I am a lucky girl. The colleagues are so nice to me, and the most wonderful thing is working with my supervisor. Polite, hard-working, and always kind to everyone. She is the one I want to be in the near future. “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” To be honest, my intern is not always interesting. I often discover that I am lost because I have no idea who I am and why I am here. At the end, I know the biggest problem of me is I don’t have a courage of keeping asking question. I give up easily sometimes. If I do nothing but waiting, the only thing happen is I am getting older and older. Then, why not just leave? Human is a strange creature, we could not tolerant the feelings of failure once and once again. So I tried self-learning, thus I knew I improve and I am better than yesterday. I may not be able to help all my collogues in Lumila, but I smile and greet everybody warmly. I cheer them up so that we make Lumila become better and better every day. To conclude, merci beaucoup for everyone who have spent the time with me. You are all become an unforgetable moment in the life forever.
  • 14. Suggestions I really appreciate the ITI offering me the liberty to organize my internship in Paris, France. The process of preparing is easier than I thought. However, I know exactly the cost behind of freedom, which means I have to take the whole responsibility for myself. From contacting the company to organize the transportation and homestay, they are just the beginning of challenges. Nevertheless, I have to thanks many help and support from my friends and family, so that I could finally walk to the end of my internship. Perhaps in the near future, there would be more and more ITI students choose to do the same thing as me. On the other hand, ITI can invite some alumnus from relating fields or countries to give them advice. I believe it can really make the intern experience special and priceless.
