  4. 4. had the good fortune of meet- ing our Hon’ble Prime Minis- ter two years back. We dis- cussed tourism and travel and the opportunities these sec- tors presented before us. I got 15minutesforinteractionand true to the time, the meeting started one minute before the scheduledtimeandcontinued for a few minutes beyond. But those 15 minutes were devot- ed to focused discussion on tourism and travel. PM Modi gives undivided attention in his meetings so much so that the person meeting him feels that there is nothing more im- portant to the PM than the agenda at hand. The PM has vast and in-depth knowledge of travel and tourism that for once I got a feeling that no one can know more about it than him and that he probably has only this industry to think about. Of course, he is the PM and is aware of every little as- pect of governance in all sec- tors, but his interest and ex- pertise in travel and tourism is simply remarkable! He is the Prime Minister of the world’s second biggest countryandtheworld’slargest democracy .Youknowhewould only be thinking 30 thousand feet above, but he can have dis- cussionswhicharerightdown there at the absolute ground level. He does not indulge in macro-conversations. Let me givesomeexamplesof it.Once we were discussing what has and what has not worked for us. I said what has worked for usisthatwehavegonetosmall property owners, and helped them develop their infrastruc- ture and get revenue. What I have learned in India is that supply is the problem, not the demand. If wegetgoodquality supply at the right price, con- sumers need them and they come forward. At the same time,Indiaisanagrarianecon- omy . We have a lot of farmers in our country and people like to visit villages, experience their stay in village accommo- dations and learn from it. So PM Modi suggested “Why don’t you try village tourism? This would enable some of these farmers to create a sus- tainable long-term source of income and help urban dwell- ers experience and know what villagelifetrulyis.”Ihave alot of colleagues who hope that someday they can take their children to the village and show them how the village en- vironment feels. Now this was in the middle of Covid and we decided to go ahead and experiment with the idea. So we went to a vil- lage in Gujarat, spoke with a certain number of villagers and started doing business with them. I am so happy to state that each one of these homes fetched the villagers more than Rs 50,000 of income permonththroughoutthepan- demic. There is one of our owners, Raju bhai, who has not just one home, but got two rooms constructed. And today , he is on the path of becoming our reseller who is going and selling our services to other farmers.Hetellspeoplethathe has been using OYO and how he has benefited from this in the same environment. So one bit of conversation with PM Modi, just a minute and a half, translatedintoanopportunity for so many of our farmers. Not just OYO, any company can venture into village tour- ismthathousesalargepartof Indian population, and enable consumers to have a unique experience and create an in- dustry by itself. PM Modi has this ability to converse in terms of massive depth and massive breadth. He looks at large scale initiatives but tracks their execution very closely and this makes our Hon’ble PM truly a Startup Prime Minister. I mentioned to him that my mother for the longest time thought that me pursuing entrepreneurship was a bad idea. Some of my friends convinced me to be an entrepreneur and she felt it was not the right thing to do. The first time the PM talked about me in Startup India, my mom finally told me that what you are doing must be proba- bly right. In his interactions with oth- erindustryleaders,hediscuss- es ideas, challenges and way ahead with the same level of depth. I have heard him talk- ing about data centre expan- sion, heard him talk about re- newableenergyrightfromthe location of solar to ethanol resources, where to find the raw materials to manufacture thesepanelsinIndiaetc. When we think infrastructure, we only think of road, railway , highway . But I have heard in- dustrygroupshaveaconversa- tion about consumer electron- ics. India this year probably will be single biggest country forconsumerelectronicmanu- facturing. Very rarely do peo- ple know about it. Recently there was a big drone policy and reform measures to pro- mote India’s drone industry . India is becoming the hotbed of drone manufacturing and innovation. In each of these industries, suchlevelof depth, inmyviewisunparalleledand this is leading all these indus- tries to grow. He is an incredible listener. In an industry delegation, he would listen to every item on thee list. In one of pre-budget CII delegations, his clear per- spective was that long term valueiscreatedbyinvestingin infrastructure. So if tourism needs to expand, we should make large scale, long term infrastructureinvestment.Ke- vadia in Gujarat is a great ex- ample of this where the world’s tallest statue, the Stat- ue of Unity is. But along with that, there are rapids for raft- ing, cactus gardens, garden basedrestaurants,junglesafa- ris and what not. It is a one-of- its-kindexperienceandIhigh- ly encourage people to visit Kevadia or Ekta Nagar. This infrastructure has now al- lowed a huge hotel industry to flourish there. We can look at Kashi Assi Ghat, railway sta- tion, Shri Kashi Vishwanath - itisincrediblehowthecityhas transformed and has had a greatknock-oneffectonevery- oneintheecosystem.Whether you are an auto driver, tourist guide, someone selling temple products, youaregrowingand soisthegovernment!PMModi is a long term reformist and a value creator. 100 unicorns don’t get created out of one initiative. Quite a few things had to come together for all of us to be here. The world and our own entrepreneurial eco- system is in awe of how we have been able to get there! We are a country with a bil- lion plus people with the as- piration and inspiration to be best in world. And we have a leader who says that we are not satisfied with status quo! TO BE CONTINUED... OTHER STORIES IN INDIA, 1% own more than 40% of total wealth Davos (PTI): The richest 1% in India now own more than 40% of the country’s total wealth, while the bot- tom half of the population together share just 3% of wealth, new study showed. Releasing the India sup- plement of its annual ine- quality report on the first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting here,rightsgroupOxfamIn- ternational said that taxing India’s ten-richest at 5% can fetch entire money to bring children back to school. “A one-off tax on unreal- ized gains from 2017–2021 on just one billionaire, Gautam Adani, could have raised `1.79 lakh crore, enough to employ more than five million Indian primary school teachers for a year,” it added. The report titled ‘Sur- vival of the Richest’ fur- ther said that if India’s bil- lionaires are taxed once at 2% on their entire wealth, it would support the re- quirement of `40,423 crore for the nutrition of mal- nourished in the country for the next three years. “A one-time tax of 5% on the 10 richest billionaires in the country (`1.37 lakh crore) is more than 1.5 times the funds estimated by the Health and Family Welfare Ministry (`86,200 crore) and the Ministry of Ayush (`3,050 crore) for the year 2022-23,” it added.
