Judge Govind Vallabh Pant said that Krishna Kumar Verma raped the girl and did unnatural sex and there cannot be any le- niency towards him. THOUSANDS OF YRS OF EARTHQUAKES Earthquakes are common in Turkey, which sits in a very seismically active region where three tectonic plates constantly grind against one another be- neath Earth’s surface. CONSTRUCTION IS A KNOWN PROBLEM Many of the collapsed buildings appear to have been built from concrete without adequate seismic reinforcement. Seismic building codes in this region suggest these buildings should be able to sustain strong earthquakes (where the ground accel- erates by 30 percent to 40 percent of the normal gravity) without incur- ring this type of complete failure. RECONSTRUCTION Even though Turkish authorities know many buildings are unsafe in earthquakes, it is still a difficult problem to solve. Many of the buildings are already built, and seismic retrofitting may be expensive or not considered a priority compared to other socio-economic chal- lenges. In addition to substan- tive loss of life and infra- structure damage, both earthquakes are likely to have caused a myriad of environmental effects, such as ruptured ground surfaces, liquified soil, and landslides. These effects may render many areas unsafe to rebuild on – so reconstruction efforts should also include planning decisions about what can be built where, to lower future risks. It may be recalled that days before the RSS had planned to celebrate Netaji Subhas Chan- dra Bose’s birth anniversary in Kolkata, his daughterAnitaBose-Pfaff had said that the organi- sation’s ideology and the nationalist leader’s ideas of secularism and inclu- siveness were “poles apart and do not coincide”. She agreed that the fanfare over the celebration of her father’s birth anniversary is to “partially serve their (BJP , RSS) own interests”. As far as ideology is concerned, the Con- gress has a lot more in common with Netaji than any other party in the country, she said. BJP and RSS do not reflect the idea of respecting all religions as preached by Netaji, who was a de- vout Hindu but believed in respecting other faiths. He was in favour of pro- ductive cooperation between members of different religions, Bose-Pfaff said. “The RSS and BJP do not necessarily reflect this attitude ...If you want to put a simple label, they are rightists and Netaji was a leftist,” she had told PTI in an interview over phone from Germany . “FromwhatIhearabout the RSS ideology, I would agree that it and Netaji’s ideology are poles apart. The two value systems do not coincide. It will cer- tainly be good if the RSS felt it wanted to embrace Netaji’s ideals and ideas. Many different groups want to celebrate Netaji’s birthday in different ways and a number of them necessarily agree with his ideas,” Bose-Pfaff said. LAUDS BJP Speaking on the recent pomp and fanfare over Ne- taji’s birth anniversary celebrations, she lauded the BJP-led government at the Centre for taking a “lot of initiatives” to honour him. “This has two aspects. After Independence, the official Congress stand on Netaji was reserved and not shared by all Congressmen. It wanted to keep the narrative that it was only the civil diso- bedience movement that led to the country’s freedom. But after Netaji files were declassified, we came to know that the Indian National Army (INA) played a very key role in it,” she said. “The BJP has made a lot of effort to honour Ne- taji. With any politician, you have first to allow them to look at his/her interest. If Netaji was alive today and held a different view from that of the government, then the BJP would not have honoured him. So (in this case) it is their interest that is served,” she said. POLITICAL ‘POW-WOW’ It may be recalled that the Trinamool Congress and BJP had locked horns to appropriateNetaji’slegacy on his 125th birth anniver- saryaheadof theassembly polls in 2021. In 2015, the West Bengal government released 64 files on the leader held by the home department.Thenextyear, the Narendra Modi government at the Centre released 100 files on him. COMMISSION AFTER COMMISSION After Independence, the Centre had formed three inquiry commissions to unravel the mystery of Netaji’s disappearance. Two of them -- the Shah Nawaz Commission and Khosla Commission were formed by the Congress governments and con- cluded that Bose died in an air crash on August 18, 1945, soon after taking off from Taihoku airport in Taiwan. Bhagwat had praised Netaji’s contribution to India’s struggle for independence and urged everyone to adopt Bose’s traits and principles and work toward making India a “vishwa guru”. “We remember Netaji not only because we are grateful to him for his valuable contributions towards the freedom struggle but also to ensure that we imbibe his qualities. “Netaji Loho Pronam” at Shahid Minar Ground in Kolkata, Bhagwat stated that even though circumstances and paths may diverge, destination remains the same. “Subhas babu (Netaji) was first associated with the Congress and followed its path of ‘satygraha’, and ‘andolon’, but when he realised that this was not enough and there was a need for freedom struggle, he worked towards it. Paths differ, but the goals are the same,” he said. The RSS chief also said, “We have Subhasbabu’s ideals in front of us to follow. The goals he had are our goals too... Netaji had said India is a smaller version of the world and the country has to provide relief to the world. We all have to work towards it,” he said, “there can be different paths, and these are described as ‘isms’ (ideologies), which might differ but what is important is the goal.” He noted that “Netaji’s legacy has remained alive” in the hearts of millions of Indians even though “no substantial efforts were made to keep it alive” after the independence. According to the CPI-M central committee member Sujan Chakraborty, “this is part of a bigger ploy of pro- jecting Netaji as a Hindu rather than a believer in inclusive politics’’. “They are organis- ing the programme just keeping in mind the panchayat elections in the state this year and the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Even Netaji’s daughter has endorsed there is no common element of connection between RSS’ divisive politics and Netaji’s inclusive ideology irrespec- tive of caste, language and religion,” he said.

The country’s largest integrated logistics player had clocked a consolidated profit of `1,535.28 crore a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Its total consolidated income increased to `5,051.17 crore in the December 2022 quarter from `4,713.37 cr in the year-ago period. The company’s total ex- penses in October-Decem- ber 2022 rose to `3,507.18 crore compared to `2,924.30 cr in the year-ago period. Karan Adani, chief executive officer and whole-time director of APSEZ, said, “The company also conclud- ed the transac- tions of Haifa Port Company, IOTL, ICD Tumb, Ocean Sparkle and G a n g av a r a m Port, and is pro- gressing well on transition- ing its business model to a transport utility”. APSEZ is targeting FY24 EBITDA of `14,500- 15,000 crore, he added. “Besides an estimated capital expenditure of `4,000-4,500 crore, we are considering total loan repayment and pre- payment of around `5,000 crore, which will significantly improve our net debt to EBITDA ra- tio and bring it clos- er to 2.5x by March 24,” Adani said on Tuesday . The group owned by tycoon Gautam Adani lost around $120 billion in value after claims of accounting fraud were levelled by short-seller US investment group Hindenburg Research on January 24. The rise on Tuesday of Adani Enter- prises and several other listed units of India’s biggest conglomerate helped trim the total loss to around $112 billion, Bloomberg reported. ‘Cannot come at the cost of the poor’ Bengaluru (PTI): India, the world’s third largest oil consumer, on Tuesday said it is committed to energy transition but surviving the present and cushioning the vulnerable from price volatilities is essential before moving to clean and green energy . India has committed to net zero carbon emission by 2070 and has repeatedly emphasised that ‘dirty’ fuels like oil and coal, on which the economy is two- thirds dependent, will have to continue to be in use in the foreseeable future. An immediate shift from low-priced coal and oil to expensive fuels of the future such as hydrogen will entail huge costs in a nation with low per capita income. “Unless we survive the present, we will not be able to go into the world of clean and green energy ,” Oil Min- ister Hardeep Puri said. “While affordable tradi- tional energy resources are essential for meeting the base load requirements, new sources of energy which are cleaner, sustain- able, and innovative, are critical for combating the menaceof climatechange.” Geopolitical situations last year led to a spike in prices of crude oil - raw material for petrol and diesel. “We have to make sure our transition entails surviving the present and cushioning vulnerable from volatility,” he said, adding the transition has to be affordable and sus- tainable particularly for vulnerable sections. Russia, whose oil is available at discount due to some western nations slapping sanctions, is now India’s top oil supplier. “I will be very frank, we will play the market card,” he said. “We will import from wherever it is available on a predictable and sound basis.” ‘INDIA WILL PLAY MARKET CARD ON OIL’ Bengaluru (PTI): India’s largest oil and gas producer ONGCwillthisyearreverse years of decline in production and gradually raise output thereafter, as it in- vests billions of dollars to produce from newer discov- eries, an official said. Oil and Natural Gas Cor- poration (ONGC) in fiscal 2021-22 produced 21.707 million tonne of crude oil, which is refined to produce petroleum products like petrol and diesel, and 21.68 billion cubic metre (bcm) of natural gas, which is used to produce electricity , manufacture fertiliser and as CNG in automobiles. “We are definitely look- ing forward to increasing production of oil and gas in 2023-24 and even in the cur- rentyear,”ONGCchairman Arun Kumar Singh said. In the current fiscal year (2022-23), crude oil production is slated to rise to 22.823 million tonnes and gas to 22.099 bcm. In the following fiscal year, oil production will climb to 24.636 million tonnes and 25.689 million tonnes in 2024-25. The coal requirement for such category of con- sumers cannot be substi- tuted by domestic coal. Thus, import of coal cannot be reduced to zero,” Power Minister R K Singh said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. During 2022-23 (till Janu- ary 2023), Coal India Ltd despatched 485.99 million tonne (provisional) coal to the power sector as compared to 440.05 MT during the same period a year ago, registering a growth of about 10%. However, he stated that with the rise in electricity demand, the increase in supply of coal to power plants is not com- mensurate with the domestic coal requirement. The meeting notice has clearly mentioned that even after a long time has passed and the required information has not been provided, thus the Speaker and Questions committee has considered the concerned officials and employees to be indifferent towards state work. It has happened for the first time that top officials of various departments have been summoned to appear before the Speaker in person.
