  29. 29. 9. Big Projects 5/12/201729 While in Finland there is perhaps one pulp factory, one data center and a cruise ship per year to counted as a big project, in Vietnam there is one published per every two weeks, and often the scale is in billions of dollars. There are approx. 300 shipbuilding projects on-going annually. The largest development projects are in infrastuctrure like roads and bridges, energy sector (incl. USD 20 billion power plant project among the 18 of those), in marine ports and in offshore (Oil & Gas). Some FDIs are mega-sized, like Samsungs USD 16 billion investment in Vietnam, or the $4.3 billion New City project in Phu Yen, the $4.2 billion Ho Tram project in Ba Ria-Vung Tau. However, as much as some of the projects are advertised in the beginning, is the agony when the project is cancelled or the licence revoked. It applies to 100% local ship building too. An sample list from January 2016, on-going and revoked http://english.vietnamnet.vn/fms/business/151424/update-on-mega-foreign- invested-projects-in-vietnam.html
  30. 30. 9. Big Project Samples 5/12/201730 Nghi Son Oil Refinery (USD 6.2 billion) is the second oil refinery in Vietnam. It is located about 200 kilometres south of Hanoi in Thanh Hóa Province. Site-clearing started already in 2008, and construction works began in October 2013, and the refinery is expected to be operational in 2017. The refinery is designed and built by a syndicate of EPC contractors including JGC Corporation and Chiyoda Corporation from Japan, GS Engineering & Construction Corporation and SK Engineering & Construction Co. from South Korea, Technip from France and Malaysia's Technip Geoproduction. Notable is that ABB is delivering the electric motors, around 8000 of those, to the refinery. Most of the motors are built in Finland. Vietnam is planning 7 more oil refinies in addition to Nghi Son and to the already operational Dung Quat refinery.
  31. 31. 9. Big Project Samples 5/12/201731 Construction the $2.5 billion Hon Khoai deepwater port in the southern province of Ca Mau, is starting before the end of 2016. The port is expected to become a major transhipment point for fuels destined for thermal power plants in the Mekong Delta. The mega port project has attracted interest from U.S. engineering firm Bechtel as well as Australian investment firm N&M Commodities. In January Bechtel signed an agreement with Van Phong Company to conduct a feasibility study for the project. The proposed design will create a 320 hectare deepwater port with 12 transhipment berths. In addition, Vietnam has at least 8 major port upgrade and new-build projects planned, starting and ongoing.
