Big Cat project
By Felicia Ferentinos
What is a big cat
• Big cats are really powerful predators that can
be found almost on every place in the world
expect in cold ranges. A other name for a big
cats is called a Felidae. The cats that you have
at home are just like a big cat expect that big
cats are wild and House cats are tamed .
During this Perestion you will learn all
different types of big cats and what they do to
stay alive. Example of a big cat Lions, Tigers
and cheetahs are big cats.
What makes a big cat a big cat
• A big cat are usually 4 members of the cat family and those cats are
leopard, Jaguar, lion and the tiger are known to be really big cats
that is because these cats know how to roar and they can not purr
like the cats do or like a house cat does. These cats can purr but
they can only do it when they breathe out. Every single big cat is
known to be an carnivore which means they only eat meat this also
means they also have very special adaptations that can help them
to get the job done and those special skills is that they have very
powerful jaws, long sharp claws and they also have dragger like
teeth these are the adaptations that makes these animal amazing
on what they do and that is to hunt. Big cats also need a lot of room
and also lot of prey so that they can have a full stomach and to help
them with their survival on their environment.
Types of Big cats
• There are about 37 big cats on this planet. The
animals that are in this animal group are
tigers, Lions, Jaguars, Leopards and Cheetahs
Tiger Lion Jaguar Leopard
Cheetah Cougar Lynx Snow leopard
A cat’s life
• The does not matter how big or how small the
cat is these animals spend a lot of their time
doing different types of amazing tracks to
keep their cat life's busy and the activates that
makes a cat’s life is doing these different
types of tracks and they are hunting, eating,
sleeping, cleaning and they also love to play
to. All of these events is what a cat does
everyday in their lives.
Learning about all kinds of big cats
• In this part you will learn all about all the cats
in this animal group. You will be learning all
different types of facts about them and what
makes them so greatly to have them on this
planet. You will learn how they hurt for their
food, where they live, how long do they live
for, and you will also learn about the troubles
that these cats have to face.
Big cats all over the world
• There are about 37 species of wild cat on this
planet. The type of habitats where big cats can
be found is places like high up in the snow-
capped mountains, to deserts, grasslands and
they can also be found in rainforests to. There
are so many different cats that can come in
shapes and sizes and that roam the earth
today. Big cats can live anywhere in the world
but they do not live In Antarctica
Tiger
• Diet: The food that the tiger eats are or really big ungulates like wild boars, Malayan tapir and deer. When they are not
hunting bigger animals then they will also go for really small animals like fowl, monkeys, and fish. These cats can also kill a
orangutan but tigers do not catch them very often because they do not spent a lot of their time on the ground so it is really
hard for a tiger to catch them. There are some tigers like the Sumatran will also sometimes hunt mice and other really small
mammals that is when bigger animals are scarce.
• Habitat/Range: Tigers can be found all around Asia . Their range is starting to declined dramatically that has lots of localized
extinctions. The biggest population of tigers is in India . These cats
• Size: A adult tiger can grow 4.5 feet (1.37 m) to 9 feet, The males are a lot bigger then the females are. The biggest tiger in
the world is the Siberian tigg and they can weigh about 500 pounds (230 kg). The smallest tiger in the species is the
Sumatran tiger and they can weigh about 250 pounds (115 kg). The size of an tiger ‘s tail is 3 – 4 feet (0.9-1.2 m). Long
• Life span: Tigers can life for 10 to 15 years when they are in the wild and when they are in captivity then they can life for 20
years when they are in a zoo or an rescue center.
• Threats : Tigers are known to be the most endangered cat in the world. There are not a lot of them lifted in the wild today.
One of the many threats that they face today is that their habitats are getting destroyed. There are two species of tiger that
became extinct for the last thirty years and there are only seven of them are about to head to extinction pretty soon. There
are 5 tigers that are still living today and there are three species that become extinct for the last 70 years.
• The other reason why the tiger is in trouble t because for so many years the people have been killing the tiger for their fur d
so that they can make coats out if them and other different types of clothes . And they are also being hunted fro t other
different part body parts that are on a tiger to.. People will also kill them for their bones to so that they can make Chinese
medicine. There are some cultures that people will also hunt the tiger for sport to and to demonstrates their own bravely . .
Tigers are also being killed to be sold for money to . There are about seven different types medicine that are being used for
as tiger body parts. . The other big threat to tigers not just them getting killed. There are also losing their homes to.. The
reason why because people are starting to live in tiger near in areas where tigers live. This will forcing these animals to
move to place where it is so small that it is so hard to hunt and to raise their young. .
Lion
• Diet: Lions will eat will big animals like wildebeest, impalas, Zebras, buffalo, and warthogs. They will
usually hunt these animals in Africa and in nilgai and those animals are wild boar and seven
different species of deer that those are the lions that live in India.
• Habitat/range: Lions live in Sub-Saharan Africa. These cats can also be found in Asia to but there
population is starting to be really endangered. The lions that live in Asia only live in a national park
that is called the Gir Forest. This located in India. Lions no longer live in North Africa and in
Southwest Asia. They used to live there for millions of years. The habitats that they live in are
savannas, grasslands . Even through they might even live in a bush and in a forest.
• Size: A lion can be big as 4.5feet long that is how big their head and their body is . Their tail can be
big as 2.3-3.5 feet long. There are some lions that can be big as 3.5-4 feet high at the shoulder, 265-
550 pounds.
• Life span: Lions can live about ten to fourteen years when they are in the wild and when they are in
captivity then they will live for twenty years.
• Threats: Lions are known to be on being vulnerable. Their population is starting to declined that
can be half till 20 years and they are counting to shrink really fast. They are also getting killed for
their fur . They are also getting killed for sport . This probe is also includes their habitat and the
prey that they catch. They are also getting killed because they killing the peoples livestock for food.
Jaguar
• Diet: Jaguars are known to be carnivores that means that they only eat meat. And it also means that they are
predators to. They will normally hunt mammals, reptiles, birds and eggs to. This will also means that they hunt
peccaries, tapirs, turtles and they will take down a alligator to. If they are not done . After they are done killing
it then it will start to bury it so that it can eat it later. The time that they will mostly hunt is when it gets dark out
which means that these cats are nocturnal.
• Habitat/Range: Jaguars live on North America, Central America and they can also be found on South America.
The type of habitats that they will live is in rainforests, Swampy areas, grasslands, woodlands, dry forests and
they can also live in deserts to
Size: The Jaguar can grow about 4 to 6 feet (1.2-1.8 m) long. Their tail can be 2 to 3 feet (0.6-0.9 m). The Jaguar is
mush bigger than the leopard .
Life span When the jaguar is in the wild then they get to live about 12 to 15 years and they can live about 20 years
when they are in the zoo.
• Threats: Jaguars are in trouble because they do not have a lot of habitat to live on and people are also hunting
them to. Jaguars are known to be The top predator in their habitat. These cats have no natural predators the
only predator that they have are humans. The reason why because they want to kill them because for their
spotted coats and also for their skins to. People all over the world have been killing these animals for a their
skins and for their spotted coats to. These animals started to be hunted in the 1960’s till than the Jaguar
population has put these cats at risk. The people that are in The CITES are making laws that can easily stop
people from saling their skins in stores ans they are making them as fast as possbile but these laws are not being
successful because people are not listening to these people so that means that Jaguar coats are still being sold
and people are also still buying in so many different types of countries on where Jaguars are found. The other
problem that Jaguars are having is that these cats are killing ranchers livestock that is because there is not a lot
of wild prey for these cats to eat. So Ranchers are setting up traps and they are also poisoning these cats to. The
other threat that is hunting these cats is because of deforestation that is because of logging, mining and also
farming is also a problem for these cats to. This is really destroying these cats homes and that means that these
cats have an really hard time looking for food and looking for a mate to have babies with.
Cheetah
• Diet: The food that the cheetah will eat is impala, gazelles, rabbits, birds, and they will also eat other small animals to. The cheetah will
normally eat mammals that weigh about 40 kgs (90lbs). The animals that they will hunt is Thomson's gazelles, springbok, kob, warthogs,
blackbuck, lesser kudu, guinea fowl and hares. There are some times that cheetahs will normally work together when they are up
aganest bigger animals like wildebeest and they will also eat their calves to.
• Habitat/Range: The cheetah lives in parts that are in Africa. They can live on the desert, savannah, scrub, bush and they can also be
found on the woodlands that can be found in Africa. They can also be found in the Southwest of Asia they can also live on the
temperate of grasslands and they can also live on the tropical savannas.
• Size: A adult cheetah can be bigger than 7 feet (2.15 m) long and they can weigh about 125 pounds (55 kg). The female can be bigger
than 6 feet(1.8 m) long and they can weigh about 100 pounds (45 kg). The height of a cheetah is 2 1/2 – 3 feet (8.9m) at the shoulder.
These cats can weigh about 110l-140 lbs (50-64kg). The shoulder of a cheetah is really 2-3 feet (67 to 94 centimeters). The length of
these cats are 3.6 to 4.4 feet (1 to 1.4 meters). The length of tail is 3.are 6 to 4.4 feet (66 to 84 centimeters). These cats can weigh
about 85 143 pounds (39 to 65 kilograms). The males are a lot bigger than the females are.
• Life span When the cheetah is in the wild than they can live about 12 years and when they are in captivity than they can live for 17
years when they are in a zoo or in a nature preserve. A cheetah ‘ s life span is between 10 to 12 years. When the cheetah is in the wild
than they can live until they are 8 old. When they are living in a zoo than they can live until they are 10 years old.
• Threats: There are so many different types of threats that the cheetah is going through today. The biggest threat to these cats is habitat
loss. The reason why their habitats are not looksing so good is because humans are taking over their lands. The other problem that they
are dealing with is that when people are taking over their lands than they will have a really hard time looking for food and they have a
really easy change for the humans and cheetahs to meet each other. The other big problem is that there is not a lot of protection for
cheetah cubs because they are always getting killed by other predators like lions or hyenas that is because they are in a competiton
with their babies and this will also lead to abnormalities
Leopard
• Diet: Leopards will eat just the smallest hoof stock and those animals are gazelles, impala, deer and they will also eat wildebeest.
They will only hunt these animals but they will only if it is really necessary and those animals are monkeys, rodents, and they will
also eat birds to. The way that they can protect their meal from other predators and from scavengers they will usually store their
prey up in a tree . The animals that the leopard will eat are different types of mammals, birds, reptiles, birds, crabs and they can
also eat fish to, the best time of the day for the leopard to look for food is really when it get s dark that means that these cats are
nocturnal.
• Habitat/Range: Leopards are mostly found on the continents of Africa and in Asia. The types of habitats that these animals will live
in are in forests, mountains, grasslands and they can also live in desert areas to. The other places where they can be found is in
rainforests, woodlands, plains and they can also be found on shrubby areas.. The parts of Africa where they can be found is in sub-
Saharan Africa, the ones that live in Asia they can be found in the Middle east parts that is in China, India, Siberia and they can also
be found in Southeast Asia. The other places where they can live is in the Soviet Union, Korea, China, India and they can also live in
Malaysia. These cats can be found on so many different types of habitats and those places are in forests mountains, grasslands and
they can also live on deserts areas to.
• Size: The size of an leopard is about 1.5 to 2.6 feet that is how big they are to the shoulder. They can also grow about 3 to 6 feet
long. The size of their tail can be big then 2 or 3.5 feet long. The males can weigh about 82 to 200 pounds the females are a lot
smaller then the males are. The length of an leopard is 3 to 6 feet (91 to 191 centimeters) their tail can be big as 23 to 44 inches (58
to 110 centimeters). The males can weigh about 80 to 200 pounds (36 to 90 kilograms). The females can weigh about 62 to 132
pounds (28 to 60 kilograms). The leopard can normally grow about 3.5-5.5 feet (1-1.7 m) long. Their tails can be big about 2 to 3 feet
(0.6-0.9 m) long. The adults can weigh about 65 to 175 pounds (30 to 80 kg).
• Life span :The normal life span for a leopard is really 20 years. When leopards are in the wild then they can live about 12 to 15 years
and when they are living in captivity then they can live for 23 years when they are living in a zoo or a wildlife preserve
• Threats : leopards are legaly being killed for their fur coats and people are secretly selling them in stores. The other problem that
leopards are in trouble that is because people are cutting down their trees so that they can make buildings and they are also getting
killed by poachers to and the reason why because they are getting killed for their whiskers that people are using to make potions out
of them. The are so many reasons why so many leopards are so in trouble today the other reason is that these cats are killing
farmers livestock and these cats are being poisoned by ranchers because they are trying to protect their animals. . Leopards are in
trouble because they are losing their habitat and they are also losing their prey and the last thing that is going on with them is
because people are hunting these beautiful cats.
Conger, Puma and mountain lion
• Diet: The mountain lion will normally eat very big mammals like deer and they can also eat smaller animals to and those animals happen to be mice, squirrels, porcupines, raccoons,
rabbits, and they will also eat beavers to. These cats are very fast and they will usually hunt alone. These cats can also be very active in both times of the day which is dawn and dusk. The
animals that they will usually eat is wild hogs, sheep, moose, elk, rabbits, hares and they can also eat rodents to like beavers. They will also eat livestock to but they will only eat these
animals if there is no wild prey in the area. A conger will normally sneak up on their prey and then they will normally attack it by leaping from a tree or from the ground. When they are
killing a really big animals than they will normally pounce on the back of their neck and than they will break it by biting into the animal’s neck.
• Habitat/Range: These cats can be found in places that are in deep deciduous forests, rainforests, grasslands and they can also live on the deserts that can be found in North and in south
America. The types of places where these cats can be found is in western of Canada, on the west side of the United States and they can also be found in the state of Florida to and they
can also live in Central and in South America. The types of habitats that they live is in forests swamps and they can also be found on grasslands as well. Congers have lots of exception
from humans but this cat has an really big range and it has the most biggest range than any other mammal that lives in the Western Hemisphere. The places where these cats can be
found is in Canada and they can also be found in Argentina. The ones that live in North America then they can be found on the British Columbia and they can also be seen ion the south
part of Alberta , California and they can also so be found in the state of Texas to. There is not a lot of congers that is on the eastern part of the Mississippi River. The Florida panther is
found in so many different types of populations that are in Florida.
• Size: The length of an male conger is about 3 to 6 feet (90 to 180 centimeters) and the length of the females are 3 to 5 feet (90 to 150 centimeters). The height of these cats are 1.9 to 2.3
feet (60 to 70 centimeters to the shoulder. The males can weigh about 147 to 227 pounds (67 to 103 kilograms) and the weigh of the females is 79 to 132 pounds (36 to 60 kilograms). The
size of these cats are about 6 feet (1.8 m) long and their very long tail can be big than 2 or 3 ft (60 to 90 cm) long. They can also weigh about 200 pounds (90kg). The height of these
animals are 2-2,3 feet that is up at the shoulder and the length of these animals are 3.5-5.5 feet (2-2.5-foot down to the tail).
• Life Span: The Average life span for an conger is really 20 years. When they are in the wild then they can live about 12 years and when they are living in captivity than they can live about
25 years. There are some congers that can live about 8 years.
• Threats:: The Conger is in trouble because they are killed because they are killing farmers livestock and they are also losing their habitats and poaching is also a problem to for these cats
to. There is a very big problem with people because they are moving on places where congers live. This has made their population increase with their numbers. There are a lot people
that look at congers like pests an when they do see one they will normally shot them and they can also trap or even poison them if they do come in contact with an human. These are
some of the reasons why these cats have become very scarce all over North America. But it is very important to understand that these cats play a very important role in the ecosystem.
These are one of the animals are known to be the top predator in their habitat. Without these amazing predators then the populations of other animals like deer will start to be
unhealthy and they their habitat will get big to filled all of those animals in their habitat. It is very true that these cats can be very dangerous and with every single problem that these
animals face should really be reported to an local animal control agency like the U.S. Department of fish and wildlife. But there are some people that enjoy to live and play in places that
are known to be wild. So this means that we have to understand and we also have to respect the wildlife that lives around in those areas. This means that we have to think of an better
way for the action of our pets, livestock and our property. It is important to learn that the mountain lion is the wisdom of power of grace.
•
Snow leopard
• Diet: These cats will eat so many different types of animals and those animals are wild sheep, marmots, pikas, hares, birds and they can also eat other animals to. The
other animals that they will eat is goats. They can also eat very small animals to and they are different types of rodents, hares and game birds.
• Habitat/Range: There are so many different types of snow leopards that can be found in the highest ,mountains that can be found in Central Asia and those altitudes
can be bigger than 9,800 to 17,000 feet.. They can also be found in the Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and they can also be found in Russia. The other areas Asia where they
can live in is in northern part of India and they can also be found on the east side of China to. There are about 60% of snow leopards that live in china. These cats can
be found on every single mountain that can be found in Central Asia.. The type of habitats that these cats can be found are in places that are on cliffs and they are
also on rocky slopes that can be underneath permanent snow line they can also live in coniferous forests scrub.
• Size: The body length of a snow leopard is 39 to 51 inches (99 to 130 centimeters). The females are a lot smaller than the males are. The length of their tails are about
31 to 39 inches (80 to 100 centimeters). The height of their shoulders is about 24 inches (60 centimeters). The males can weigh about 99 to 121 pounds (45 to 55
kilograms). The females can weigh about 77 to 88 pounds (35 to 40 kilograms). These cats are known to be medium-sized cats and they can grow about 3 ½ feet (1
m) long. The tail can grow about 3 feet (0.9m) long. A adult snow leopard can weigh about 60-120 pounds (27-55 kg). The males are a lot bigger than the females are.
• Life span: When these cats are living in captivity like they are living in a zoo or in a nature preserve than they can live for about 21 years. It is very hard to till how long
does a snow leopard in the wild because it does not like to be with people so it is very hard to see how long these big cats live in the wild. There are some zoos where
they can live for 18 years when they are living in captivity.
• Threats: The snow leopard is facing lots of different types of threats one of those threats is the change of the climate. These are some of the threats that these cats
are facing. The snow leopard is in trouble today because they are losing their habitats to humans and people are also hunting these cats to. The other threats that
these cats are facing is the change of the clmate that is going on in their habitat range. The other problem that the snow leopard is facing is that they are losing their
habitat so that means that they can not find a lot of food for them to eat and they are also getting trouble because they are getting hunted a lot to. The places where
the snow leopard is being called in places like in Central Asia, Eastern Europe and the people that live in Russia these are the type places that are killing the snow
leopard for their beautiful coats and people will nomrally use their coat so that they can make fur trades out of it. They are also killing the snow leopard for other
different types of reasons to and those reasons in they are also killing the snow leopard for other garments to. People will use these cats body parts and they will also
use their bones so that they can make Asian medicine. There is another problem that the snow leopard is facing and that is there is not a lot of room for them to look
for food that is because their area is being taken over by people’s live stock herds are starting to graze on their land so that means that the snow leopard will have a
hard time hiding in the grass for when they are sneaking up on what ever animal that they are trying to catch. If the snow leopard does not find a lot of food to eat
then they will start to wander into where people live and then they will start to kill their livestock but they will normally do this if they can not find any wild prey to
eat.
Lynx and Bobcat
• Diet: The type of food that the bobcat will eat is rabbits, hares, they will also eat other animals to like they can eat birds bats, and they can also eat a
full-grown adult deer, but they usually hunt deer when the winter season comes. The other food that they will eat is lambs, poultry and they will also
really small pig if there is ranch somewhere in that area. They will also eat foxes, weasels and they can also eat really small species of deer to, They
can eat fish and eggs.
• Habitat/ Range: The type of places where the bobcat lives is in forests, swamps, deserts and they can also live on suburban areas. The Eurasian lynx
range can be found on western part of Europe the other places where they will live is in North Asia and they can also live in the middle east, The
Spanish lynx can be found in Spain and in Portugal. The Lynx that is Canadian and the bobcat only be found on the Continent of North America. The
types of habitats they like to live in are on the prairies, steppes, scrubland, temperate forests and they can also be found in taiga they can be found
in tundra but it really depends on the type of species . Bobcats can be found on so many different types of places that are in the Continent of North
American but they are can also be found in Mexico and they can also live in the southern part of Canada. Bobcats can also live in forests, swamps,
mountains, prairie and they can also live on deserts that can be found in North America.
• Size: The bobcat can grow about 24 to 40 inches (60-100 cm) long this also means that tail to their tail can grow about 4 to 7 inches (10 to 18) long.
The height of these animals are 17 to 23 inches. Their length is 25 to 41 inches. They can weigh about 16 to 28lbs this is the weight of an male and
the females can weigh about 10 to 18 lbs. The Siberian lynx can be bigger than 39 inches (1 meter) the other species of lynx can be grow about 19 tl
35 inches (48 to 90 centimeters). The Siberian lynx shoulder height is about 27 inches (70 centimeters), the other species of lynx shoulder heights is
about 16 to 22 inches (40 to 56 centimeters). The length of their tail is about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters). The male Siberian lynx can weight
about 84 pounds (38 kilograms) the other species will normally weigh about 18 to 60 pounds (8 to 27 kilograms) but this weigh really depends on the
type of gender and the type of habitats.
• Life span :When the bobcat is in the wild then it can live about 12 years when they are on their natural habitat and when they are in captivity then
they can live about 21 years when they are living in a zoo or in nature preserve. These cats can also live about 12 to 13 years
• Threats: The Lynx does not have an very good future that is because people are taking over these cats habitats when this happens then the lynx will
have a really hard time to look for food and there are some places where there are forest are being cut down to the reason why they are being cut
down is because of agricultural uses. The other problem that these cats are facing is that people are hunting them to the reason why because they
are being killed for their coats that will normally keep the lynx really warm and very comfortable they also need their fur for the really cold months
comes. Their fur is really popular for their fur industly but they will need their lighter-colored belly fur the most. Some people think that there are
about 90,000 bobcats and lynx that are being sold in different types of markets in every single year on every sngle place around the world. But their
coats look like better on lynx than on a person where it belongs.
The difference between a Jaguar and a
leopard
Which one is a leopard or a Jaguar
Extinct Big cats
• The extinct cat that I am doing is this type of cat that is called the Sabor tooth tiger or Smilodon.
The Smilodon used to be the most biggest saber-tooth cat ( or it can also be called saber-tooth
tiger). This dangerous predator used to weight about 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 m) long and least at less 3
feet (0.9) all the way down the cats tail. The Smilodon used to be a carnivore that means that they
were a meat-eater and they will only eat meat The type of food that these cats will mostly eat were
prey that will usually be very thick-skinned like the mastodons ( which happens to be a very hairy
elephant that is now extinct). The other food that they used to eat were different types of horses
and they will also eat bison as well. These cat probably ambushed their prey will usually have a very
short time when they are running that is because they had very short legs so it was very hard to run
fast. The Smilodon has very good hunting skills that can help these cats to caught their food and
one of those skills is that they will use their very sharp saber-like teeth this is how these cats will
use their very sharp teeth so that they can kill their prey and they will normally kill it by its belly and
then it will let the victim to bleed very badly. These cats will are also known to be a scavenger just
like any other meat-eating animal will do. The type of habitats that the saber-tooth used to look on
grasslands, shrubby areas, and they can also be found in pine forests. They like these types of areas
that is because so that these places can support the prey animals that they hunt. The Smilodon first
came on the planet which was about 1.6 million years in the past . The Smilodon is now extinct in
about 11,000 years ago. These cats used to live during the last Ice Age this was the time when the
world started to become very cold. There were so many different types of Ice sheets and lots of
glaciers that covered all over the land and on the sea to.
• When sea level fall into the sea then then they will start to froze up turning the water into polar ice
and they will also turn into glaciers as well. The Smilodon used to live during the Pleistocene Epoch
( that means that they lived in the early part of the Quaternary Period).
Big cat senses
• There are a lot of big cats that will usually hunt alone and there are some that will hunt at
night. So to help them to look for food or to see well when it gets dark then they have very
special senses that can help them to hunt and to see well at night.
Sight
Cats have the best Eye vision
they can see things much
better than people do
especially in dim light.
Big cats are very known for
their amazing eyesight. The
reason why they are so
amazing is that they can
glow in the dark. When it is
start to get dark out then
the eyes’ pupils will start to
spend so that they can let a
lot of light into their eyes so
that they can see well. When
it get brighter then the
pupils will start to narrow
again.
Eyes Smell Taste
A big cat’s nose can
be very sensitive
their sense of smell
can help the big cats
to know where their
territory is it can help
them to look for a
mate, family and
their sense of smell
can also come in
handy for when they
are looking for food.
In a big cats nose
there is about 19
million nerve ending
that can be inside of
their nose.
Inside of an big cats
mouth they have a
very long and a very
rough tongue that
they use to groom
themselves, their cubs
and they will also use
their tongue so that
they can lick the meat
off of the bones off of
the dead animal and
they will also use their
tongues to lap up the
water for when they
are drinking from a
nearby watering area.
Big cat senses part 2
• Every single big cats in the world all have
extremely sensitive to vibrations that will
usually come from the air there are some
cats that can even tell when bad weather
is happens or when there is a earthquake
or a volcano is about to erupt just right
when they even come.
Big cats have very long whiskers
That happens to have very stiff
hairs that can be found on the
nerve ends of the roots. A cats
whiskers help the big cats to feel
its way around its habitat. Their
whiskers gives these cats

The trouble with big cats
• There are so many reasons why big cats are in trouble today and the dangers
that they are facing is that they are getting killed by poachers, livestock
farmers and they are also getting killed by get rode over by different types of
cars and trucks and other objects that people can drive in.But the most biggest
threat to these big cats is that they are losing their homes that is because
people are taken over their homes so that they can make room for towns,
cities and houses. Losing their habitats is the worst threat that the big cats are
facing today. In the past there has been about seven different big cats that
have already become extinct and they are so many of these cats are
endangered today. There are so many conservations all over the world that
are keeping a really close watch on these big cats and they are also watching
on their population and they are also watching out for poachers to. The other
reason why these cats are endangered that is because people are killing them
so that they can clothes and carpets out of their fur that is the reason why
these beautiful cats are also endangered to. There are so many reasons why
big cats are endangered in the wild and that is because of poaching, they are
losing their habitats and they are also being hunted to.

What makes a big cat a big cat • A big cat are usually 4 members of the cat family and those cats are leopard, Jaguar, lion and the tiger are known to be really big cats that is because these cats know how to roar and they can not purr like the cats do or like a house cat does. These cats can purr but they can only do it when they breathe out. Every single big cat is known to be an carnivore which means they only eat meat this also means they also have very special adaptations that can help them to get the job done and those special skills is that they have very powerful jaws, long sharp claws and they also have dragger like teeth these are the adaptations that makes these animal amazing on what they do and that is to hunt. Big cats also need a lot of room and also lot of prey so that they can have a full stomach and to help them with their survival on their environment.
  • 4. Types of Big cats • There are about 37 big cats on this planet. The animals that are in this animal group are tigers, Lions, Jaguars, Leopards and Cheetahs Tiger Lion Jaguar Leopard Cheetah Cougar Lynx Snow leopard
  • 5. A cat’s life • The does not matter how big or how small the cat is these animals spend a lot of their time doing different types of amazing tracks to keep their cat life's busy and the activates that makes a cat’s life is doing these different types of tracks and they are hunting, eating, sleeping, cleaning and they also love to play to. The type of habitats where big cats can be found is places like high up in the snow- capped mountains, to deserts, grasslands and they can also be found in rainforests to. There are so many different cats that can come in shapes and sizes and that roam the earth today. Big cats can live anywhere in the world but they do not live In Antarctica
  • 8. Tiger • Diet: The food that the tiger eats are or really big ungulates like wild boars, Malayan tapir and deer. When they are not hunting bigger animals then they will also go for really small animals like fowl, monkeys, and fish. These cats can also kill a orangutan but tigers do not catch them very often because they do not spent a lot of their time on the ground so it is really hard for a tiger to catch them. There are some tigers like the Sumatran will also sometimes hunt mice and other really small mammals that is when bigger animals are scarce. • Habitat/Range: Tigers can be found all around Asia . Their range is starting to declined dramatically that has lots of localized extinctions. The biggest population of tigers is in India . These cats • Size: A adult tiger can grow 4.5 feet (1.37 m) to 9 feet, The males are a lot bigger then the females are. The biggest tiger in the world is the Siberian tigg and they can weigh about 500 pounds (230 kg). The smallest tiger in the species is the Sumatran tiger and they can weigh about 250 pounds (115 kg). The size of an tiger ‘s tail is 3 – 4 feet (0.9-1.2 m). There are not a lot of them lifted in the wild today. One of the many threats that they face today is that their habitats are getting destroyed. There are two species of tiger that became extinct for the last thirty years and there are only seven of them are about to head to extinction pretty soon. There are 5 tigers that are still living today and there are three species that become extinct for the last 70 years. • The other reason why the tiger is in trouble t because for so many years the people have been killing the tiger for their fur d so that they can make coats out if them and other different types of clothes . And they are also being hunted fro t other different part body parts that are on a tiger to.. People will also kill them for their bones to so that they can make Chinese medicine. There are some cultures that people will also hunt the tiger for sport to and to demonstrates their own bravely . . Tigers are also being killed to be sold for money to . There are about seven different types medicine that are being used for as tiger body parts. . The other big threat to tigers not just them getting killed. There are also losing their homes to.. The reason why because people are starting to live in tiger near in areas where tigers live. This will forcing these animals to move to place where it is so small that it is so hard to hunt and to raise their young. .
  • 9. Lion • Diet: Lions will eat will big animals like wildebeest, impalas, Zebras, buffalo, and warthogs. They will usually hunt these animals in Africa and in nilgai and those animals are wild boar and seven different species of deer that those are the lions that live in India. • Habitat/range: Lions live in Sub-Saharan Africa. These cats can also be found in Asia to but there population is starting to be really endangered. The lions that live in Asia only live in a national park that is called the Gir Forest. Their population is starting to declined that can be half till 20 years and they are counting to shrink really fast. They are also getting killed for their fur . They are also getting killed for sport . This probe is also includes their habitat and the prey that they catch. They are also getting killed because they killing the peoples livestock for food.
  • 10. Jaguar • Diet: Jaguars are known to be carnivores that means that they only eat meat. And it also means that they are predators to. They will normally hunt mammals, reptiles, birds and eggs to. This will also means that they hunt peccaries, tapirs, turtles and they will take down a alligator to. If they are not done . After they are done killing it then it will start to bury it so that it can eat it later. The time that they will mostly hunt is when it gets dark out which means that these cats are nocturnal. • Habitat/Range: Jaguars live on North America, Central America and they can also be found on South America. The type of habitats that they will live is in rainforests, Swampy areas, grasslands, woodlands, dry forests and they can also live in deserts to Size: The Jaguar can grow about 4 to 6 feet (1.2-1.8 m) long. Their tail can be 2 to 3 feet (0.6-0.9 m). The Jaguar is mush bigger than the leopard . Life span When the jaguar is in the wild then they get to live about 12 to 15 years and they can live about 20 years when they are in the zoo. • Threats: Jaguars are in trouble because they do not have a lot of habitat to live on and people are also hunting them to. Jaguars are known to be The top predator in their habitat. These cats have no natural predators the only predator that they have are humans. The reason why because they want to kill them because for their spotted coats and also for their skins to. People all over the world have been killing these animals for a their skins and for their spotted coats to. These animals started to be hunted in the 1960’s till than the Jaguar population has put these cats at risk. The people that are in The CITES are making laws that can easily stop people from saling their skins in stores ans they are making them as fast as possbile but these laws are not being successful because people are not listening to these people so that means that Jaguar coats are still being sold and people are also still buying in so many different types of countries on where Jaguars are found. The other problem that Jaguars are having is that these cats are killing ranchers livestock that is because there is not a lot of wild prey for these cats to eat. So Ranchers are setting up traps and they are also poisoning these cats to. The other threat that is hunting these cats is because of deforestation that is because of logging, mining and also farming is also a problem for these cats to. This is really destroying these cats homes and that means that these cats have an really hard time looking for food and looking for a mate to have babies with.
  • 11. Cheetah • Diet: The food that the cheetah will eat is impala, gazelles, rabbits, birds, and they will also eat other small animals to.
