Old Dhaka, also known as Puran Dhaka, is the historic
center of the city of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
The area has a rich history that dates back over 400
years.
The city of Dhaka was founded in the early 17th century
by Mughal prince Islam Khan, who established a fort in
the area to control the region. The fort was named
"Jahangir Nagar" after the Mughal emperor Jahangir.

Old Dhaka was also a center of political activity during the
struggle for independence from British rule. The area saw
intense fighting between the Pakistani army and Bengali
nationalists during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
Today, Old Dhaka is a densely populated area with a
mix of residential and commercial buildings The area
is known for its many mosques, temples, and historic
landmarks, including the Lalbagh Fort, the Armenian
Church, and the Star Mosque.

 Dhaka, Bangladesh- People on the street of Old Dhaka: The Asia-
Pacific region is urbanizing rapidly. While for the world as a whole
the urban population growth rate is 2.0%, in Asia and the Pacific it is
2.3%.

Culture of OLD DHAKA
Shakrain: Shakrain Festival(also known as Kite
festival or Ghuri Utsob) is an annual celebration in
Old Dhaka,which is observed with the flying of
kites. This day is also known as Poush Sangkranti.
It is one of the oldest annual festivals and a
significant event in Bangladeshi Culture.It is also
the symbol of unity and friendship in Bangladesh.

Language: Dhakaiya Kutti and Dhakaiya
Urdu are mainly used in Old Dhaka region.
Dhakaiya Kutti is spoken by the original
Dhakaiyas of Old Dhaka which is a dialect of
Bengali and Dhakaiya Urdu is spoken by
Khusbas, Bihari and Mujahir.

Education: Jagannath University is a leading public university in our country
located at Old Dhaka. Sir Salimullah Medical College was founded in 1875 in Old
Dhaka also. These institutions are having a very important impact in our
educational sector & also carrying the culture of Old Dhaka.

Biriyani: When Mughal rule arrived in the Dhaka
region in the early 17th century, it brought - along with
intrigue, grandeur and tantrums - the biryani. Back then,
it is said, the biryani could be prepared only for members of
the ruling family, that too on special occasions.

Bakarkhani: Dhakai Bakarkhani is the
traditional food/snack of the people of old Dhaka.
It is famous for its quality and taste and it was
highly praised by the Royal court of the Mughal
Empire in Delhi.

Beauty Lachchi: Beauty Lachchi is one of the best drinks in Old Dhaka. This
business is about 100 years old. It’s famous for It's taste. Because they do not use any
blenders or other modern machinery to make the lachchi. They use their traditional way and
hand. So, this is the main secret of their Lachchi.

Economy of OLD DHAKA
Retail and wholesale trade: Old Dhaka is home to many shops, bazaars, and
markets selling a wide range of products, including textiles, clothing, electronics,
hardware, and food.

cultural heritage. Many visitors come to the area to visit historic landmarks and
sample the local cuisine.
Handicrafts: Old Dhaka is famous for its traditional handicrafts, including

workshops and sell their products in local markets.

Solution for the Problems
The government plans to specially develop and bring back the traditional architecture
of old Dhaka keeping the original heritage of the ancient city unharmed.
It is known that Dhaka is at the bottom of the list of livable cities in the world and
within this city, Old Dhaka is the most unplanned residential and commercial area.
RAJUK has taken the initiative to redevelop such an unplanned area on a block
basis.

Traffic congestion and the unorganized infrastructure is still the main problem in old
Dhaka. Initiatives are needed to solve these problems. It is possible to solve this
problem permanently, especially through redevelopment.
The landowners need to be offered a convincing amount of benefit in exchange for
their involvement in the plan. It may seem to be unrealistic to achieve, however, if
factors are considered in the plan where the landowners are assured better return, it
can be possible.

Old Dhaka remains a must-visit destination
for anyone seeking to explore the unique and
diverse culture of Bangladesh.
