• Leaders must wear a seemingly infinite
number of hats but 5 are critical:
1. Bare headed
2. Pith helmet
3. Pulled-down fedora
4. A talking hat
5. Baseball cap
Which Hat Do I Wear?
Roles That Leaders Play
• The Truth-Seeker
– A leader needs to have some sense of where
they are trying to go and how to get there…
This requires information
• Triangulating information
• Gathering intelligence
Bareheaded before God
• The Direction-Setter (explorers hat)
– After you have the information you need you must
set a course that others can follow
Pith Helmet
• The agent from C.H.A.N.G.E.
– A good leader is responsible for being the catalyst
for change
Pulled Down Fedora
• The Spokesperson
– Selling, both internally and externally the change
that needs to occur
• Making the impossible seem difficult
• Making the difficult seem as just another days work
Talking Hat
• The Coach/Team builder
– Helping the team maintain focus in the face of
internal conflicts and external pressures
– Living the vision
Baseball Cap & Whistle
• Understanding the many roles leaders take on
• Becoming a truth-setter
• Being a catalyst for change
