Tableau On-site trainings FAQ
Can I customize onsite training?
The Edgematics training department has put
considerable effort into determining the most effective
way to learn our product. The training materials and
exercises walk you through activities that will help you
learn and understand the important concepts within
Tableau. As a result, we find it is best not to veer too far
off the path of our training best practices. That said, we
are open to modifying the emphasis of the course or
substituting certain topics based on your needs.
How many students can I have in a
class?
Classes are very interactive, with a lot of hands-on
activities and a forum to ask questions. We find that 6-8
is an ideal number of students in a class in order to
ensure each student gets focused time with the
instructor. We allow a maximum of 10 students per class.
Can the training be modified to be
based on our data?
This is a common request and seems obvious at the
surface. However, we believe that your students will
better learn the concepts of Tableau if they are first
abstracted from your data and based on sample data and
activities that are built to ensure that the important
concepts of Tableau are well understood. Working from
customer data tends to sideline teaching into data issues.
For those that want the opportunity to work from their
own data, we offer our Custom Data Workshop. This
one-day offering can be added to any of your other
onsite packages to allow students to learn the product
using standard training samples and then to apply the
concepts to their own data in a following workshop. This
is a training add-on, and is not delivered on its own.
What are the requirements for hosting
an onsite training class?
To host a Tableau training onsite you will need a
classroom with a projector and white boards, one PC per
student with Tableau installed, and internet access
available on each machine. The expectation is that the
classroom and PC will be set up prior to the arrival of the
instructor. Upon booking onsite training, we will provide
you a detailed setup checklist.
What materials are provided?
Edgematics will provide all of the materials required for
the training class, including one training manual and USB
drive per student. The training manual provides a handy
take away reference for the student. The USB drive
includes copies of all of the completed activities, plus
many sample workbooks and documents that the
student can reference after the class.
A participation certificate will be provided to all the
students.

Course Description
Audience
You are a strong Tableau user who wants to learn more about best practices in visual analytics. The Visual Analytics
course helps experienced Tableau users connect the science of data visualization to the principles of visual best
practices. In this course, you will also learn how to leverage research on human perception to create Tableau
visualizations that truly help people see and understand data.
This course uses Tableau to develop and discuss visualizations, but does not include instruction on how to use Tableau
products—we expect that you already know how to navigate and use Tableau. The primary goals are to develop your
visual analytic skills, to engage in active planning for elegant visual design, implement dashboards that reflect best
practices, answer your data questions, and best communicate answers to your intended audience.
Duration
Two days of live classroom
Pre-requisites
You should already know how to use Tableau well. Ideally, you have taken the Fundamentals and Advanced courses,
but this is not an official prerequisite. Be aware that we won’t introduce you to product features or walk you through
step-by step instructions.
Course Includes
This course includes a workbook containing key concepts on each topic covered and hands-on activities to reinforce
the skills and knowledge attained. It also includes a flash drive containing Tableau workbooks and data sources to
support the hands-on activities.
What to bring
Please bring three examples of visualizations you’ve created in the past. These examples don’t have to be complex, just
something you’ve actually used or presented. Any format (.twbx, .twb, image) is fine.
Formats and Procedures
We use a combination of traditional teaching methods (lecture, class discussion) and in-class activities.
Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to add to your visual analysis toolbox. You will strengthen your analytical skills and gain an
understanding of visualization best practices. You will become a better analyst, designer, and communicator.

Dashboards Design to Inform
Course Description
Audience
You are responsible for providing your business with overviews of data. Upon this information your business has to
make decisions. You are ready to implement best dashboard design practices and data visualization theory into your
own designs and become a beacon of change in your organization.
Dashboard design is an intricate play between demands, form, data and limited screen real estate. Every choice you
make has consequences. The mastery of weighing all choices and create a design your users love to use for their tasks
is what dashboard design is about. In this training you will obtain the knowledge to do just that. During the practical
part of this course we will use Tableau software to implement what you have learned. This can either be on your own
projects and/or on case studies provided.
Duration
Two days of live classroom
Pre-requisites
It is recommended to have taken part in the ‘Data Visualization Unveiled’ course. With this knowledge you certainly
have an edge during the Dashboard design course. For the practical part of this course where we will use Tableau
Software it is recommended to have done the Tableau Fundamentals course and also the Tableau Advanced course (or
have knowledge at this level).
Course Includes
This course includes the slides of the presentation used during this course and a flash drive containing workbooks and
examples.
What to bring
Please bring Five (5) examples of dashboards used in your organization. The visualizations can be made with any tool, it
does not have to be Tableau. If you want to work on your own data/dashboard designs please make sure to bring your
data/dashboard designs.
Formats and Procedures
The course is a combination of traditional teaching methods (lecture, discussion) and in class activities (case studies,
working in small groups). Underlying this method is learning by experiencing. In this way the different theoretical
aspects will be made your own in no time.
Course Objectives
The objective is to have you design dashboards which inform your clients in a clear, transparent and easily accessible
manner.
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
 Design clear, transparent and easily accessible
dashboards
 Deconstruct your customers’ demands in information
needs
 See and pinpoint the difference between good
and bad dashboard designs
 Improve or redesign existing dashboards
 Explain to others why you have made certain

Tableau Drive
Course Description
Audience
You are an executive responsible for business results, an IT (change) manager, an IT project manager, a Tableau power
user or a professional who sees the power of data analytics.
Your organization is getting slowly but surely convinced by the power of Tableau software. People spread across your
company see fast results. Other people in your organization are getting curious and want to know what this visual
analytics is all about.
It is time for your company to adopt the culture of analytics. It is time for Drive. In this course you will be introduced to
Drive. A proven enterprise deployment methodology for self-service analytics. Companies like Cisco and Facebook
used this method to successfully implement visual analytics throughout their company. They now have employees who
are identifying problems and fixing them for themselves in hours instead of days and building reports in weeks instead
of months. Welcome to the road forward.
Duration
One day of live classroom
Pre-requisites
It is recommended to have some basic knowledge of Tableau Software.
Course Includes
This course includes the slides of the presentation used during this course. Furthermore you will receive formats for
certain parts of the Drive method. During the course you will work on a organization specific presentation so you can
start sharing the method right away.
What to bring
Prior to the training you will be asked to collect certain information in your organization and bring that to the course.
You will use that information to fill in Drive formats.
Formats and Procedures
The course is a combination of traditional teaching methods (lecture, discussion) and in class activities (case studies,
working in small groups). Underlying this method is learning by experiencing. In this way the different theoretical
aspects will be made your own in no time.
Course Objectives
This course is designed to give you understanding of the Drive method in such a way that you can start implementing
this method in your own organization. During the course certain aspects of the method will already be done by
yourself in a group setting.
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
 Share the Drive method with others in your organization
 Step by step start implementing the Drive method

  • 11. 8 www.edgematics.com Edgematics’ Tableau Training Catalogue H1 2016 Tableau On-site trainings FAQ Can I customize onsite training? The Edgematics training department has put considerable effort into determining the most effective way to learn our product. The training materials and exercises walk you through activities that will help you learn and understand the important concepts within Tableau. As a result, we find it is best not to veer too far off the path of our training best practices. That said, we are open to modifying the emphasis of the course or substituting certain topics based on your needs. How many students can I have in a class? Classes are very interactive, with a lot of hands-on activities and a forum to ask questions. We find that 6-8 is an ideal number of students in a class in order to ensure each student gets focused time with the instructor. We allow a maximum of 10 students per class. Can the training be modified to be based on our data? This is a common request and seems obvious at the surface. However, we believe that your students will better learn the concepts of Tableau if they are first abstracted from your data and based on sample data and activities that are built to ensure that the important concepts of Tableau are well understood. Working from customer data tends to sideline teaching into data issues. For those that want the opportunity to work from their own data, we offer our Custom Data Workshop. This one-day offering can be added to any of your other onsite packages to allow students to learn the product using standard training samples and then to apply the concepts to their own data in a following workshop. This is a training add-on, and is not delivered on its own. What are the requirements for hosting an onsite training class? To host a Tableau training onsite you will need a classroom with a projector and white boards, one PC per student with Tableau installed, and internet access available on each machine. The expectation is that the classroom and PC will be set up prior to the arrival of the instructor. Upon booking onsite training, we will provide you a detailed setup checklist. What materials are provided? Edgematics will provide all of the materials required for the training class, including one training manual and USB drive per student. The training manual provides a handy take away reference for the student. The USB drive includes copies of all of the completed activities, plus many sample workbooks and documents that the student can reference after the class. A participation certificate will be provided to all the students.
