3. Where we stand?
• Endorsement of the Pillar 3 Implementation plan
(P3 GIP) during the 6th Plenary Assembly in June
2018
• Appointment of the new chair in October 2018
• Contact with the regional chairs in January 2019 to
start the implementation of activity 1: development
of an online database of Soil Science R&D
institutions and programmes
4. Online database of Soil Science R&D
• Focus on the identification of all existing soil
research partners, soil research facilities and
infrastructure, soil teaching and research programs,
and soil related research gaps;
• Intended to serve as a knowledge exchange and
facilitation platform for the development of joint
projects or programmes;
• Useful for identifying pools of external experts
under different soil-related topics
• Soil R&D DB should be structured by topics and
regions
6. Activity
Period of
implementation
Actors involved
1. Develop selection criteria for including relevant
research centers/institutes, soil testing facilities, soil
research and academic programs into the inventory
Mar – Jun 2019
Pillar 3 working group
and ITPS
2. Publish and distribute the questionnaire through
GSP channels and newly identified channels

7. How to contribute?
• Let’s put a name! Sci-Soil Hub, Sci4Soil,
NetworkinSoil
• Regional P3 WGs, led by regional chairs, contribute
to the development and feeding of the global
database
conduct an analysis of the situation in the
region/country to identify at least the most
relevant research institutes and contact them
directly to ensure their participation
9. Global Assessment of Soil Pollution
Responding to:
• UNEA3 resolution “Managing soil pollution to
achieve sustainable development”
• GSOP18 outcome document “Be the solution to
soil pollution”
• The 6th Plenary Assembly endorsed it and
recommended to involve member countries
10. Global Assessment of Soil Pollution
1. What information is publicly available? (regional consultants)
• National/international reports
• Inventories
• Legislation
• Case studies
• Public records on health and environmental issues
2. What information do the countries have? (questionnaire)
• Polluting activities list
• Inventories
• Legislation
• Soil contaminants analysis
• Approaches to remediate soil pollution
11. Global Assessment of Soil Pollution
3. Information gathering and gap identification (regional
consultants + GSP Secretariat)
- Is the information gathered rich, robust, comprehensive and well-
developed?
- What are the main gaps related to soil pollution in each region?
- Is the situation comparable globally? Regionally?
- Is the information gathered relevant to SoilSTAT?
- Is there quantitative information on soil pollution that can be
mapped?
12. Global Assessment of Soil Pollution
4. What is the regional/global situation when considering
soil pollution? (GSP focal points, RSPs, regional partners)
- What is the regional extent of polluted soils (local and diffuse
pollution)?
- What legislations are in place to prevent, minimize and remediate
soil pollution?
- What are the regional trends of soil pollution?
- What are the major constraints and needs to prevent and remedy
soil pollution?
Regional workshops to discuss
and agree on recommendations
and conclusions
13. 5. Preparation of the final technical report and policy brief
(ITPS, GSP Secretariat and partners, RSPs)
- Sources of soil pollution
- The health and economic costs of soil pollution
- Global extent and trends of soil pollution
- Regional status of soil pollution (drivers, extent, case studies,
priorities, constraints)
- Actions to tackle soil pollution (legal instruments, management
and remediation approaches)
- Conclusions and way forward
