Agriculture sector significantly contributes to Timor-Leste economy;
In 2014 the Agriculture sector contributed 5.9% to non-oil GDP;
The 2004 & 2010 National Population and Housing Census (NPHC)
integrated five agriculture questions, while the 2015 NPHC integrated
improved Agriculture Module;
1st National Agriculture Sample Survey (NASS) conducted in 2007/08;
The 2010 NPHC 70.4 % lives in the rural areas, of which 86% were
engaged in crop and livestock production;
Limited structural information and institutional capacity on agricultural
statistics;
The current government is highly committed to realize the 1st Timor-
Leste Agriculture Census (TLAC) – as part of the strategy to improve
bench mark statistics for better planning and fiscal allocations to
achieve food security and poverty reduction.

4. What are included in the Agriculture Module of the 2015 National
Population and Housing Census
• Crop production (by season and type of crops planted);
• Livestock rearing (including number and type of livestock);
• Fisheries and aquaculture activities
• Levels of agricultural activity (Minor agriculture activity (backyard);
Producing mainly for home consumption & Producing mainly for sale)
• Use of tractors (type and sources/ownership of tractor);
• Use of technologies (including mulching, fertilizers, pesticides,
herbicides, improved seeds, and irrigation);
• Estimated crop land/area under cultivation;
• Land tenure status;
• Agricultural labor (household, hired labor, group ).

Agriculture Sector at a Glance
• Analysis of the Agricultural Module is on-going
• Initial results as follows:
• Total Number of Private Households enumerated: 204,597
• Number of households engaged in agriculture: 183,633 (90%)
• Number of households engaged in crop production: 162,806 (97%)
• Number of households engaged in livestock rearing: 178,363 (89%)
• Number of households engaged in Aquaculture & Fisheries: 68,413 (37%)

Minor agricultural activity (backyard): 84 ,217 (46%)
Producing mainly for home consumption: 94,159 (51%)
Producing mainly for sale: 5,257 (3%) 5

7. Analytical Output and Dissemination
The products from the Agriculture Module of the 2015
NPHC will include the following:
Complete range of tables by household, to first and
third tier of the geographical area (Municipality,
Administrative Post and Suco/Village - to be
released in September 2016);
Thematic (analytical) report - to be released in
October 2016);
Inclusion of agriculture module information into a
Census Atlas- to be released in early 2017).

All methodologies and sampling design will
consider concepts and definitions from the
World Programme for the Census of
Agriculture 2020.
