OVERVIEW
Depreciation is the gradual reduction of an asset's value over time. In most countries,
assets are determined by how much time they will useful economically for the company
(useful life). During this period of time, assets are being used by the company making
their value reduce gradually along the way. This reduction is programmed based on the
its economic life and in SAP it is called ordinary depreciation.
At the end of this procedure, users will be able to classify assets in groups that can
have different ordinary depreciation calculations, its base values for calculations as well
as the minimum value that assets can have, and account determination for each type
asset classification.

GLOSSARY
Asset depreciation Reduction in the book value of an asset due to its use over time or
due to legal framework for taxation reporting.
Calculation key Code used for calculation of depreciation amounts and controls
automatic calculation of ordinary depreciation and maximum percentages of manual
depreciation.
Calculation method The calculation methods are used to set the parameters of the
depreciation calculation program.
Chart of depreciation Object that contains the defined depreciation areas, and the
rules for the evaluation of assets that are valid in a specific country or economic area. It
is independent from the chart of accounts.
Cutoff value key Absolute or percentage value in which depreciation stops for an
asset.
Depreciation area An area showing the valuation of a fixed asset for a particular
purpose.
Depreciation key Code used for calculating depreciation amounts, and is defined by
specifying calculation methods, interest calculation, cutoff values and other control
parameters.
Maximum base value Base value used for the calculation of depreciation.
Ordinary depreciation Depreciation calculation which brings down the value of the
asset after every planned period until it is fully depreciated over its life period.
Period control A function that determines the start or the end of depreciation
calculation at the time of a fixed asset acquisition or retirement.
