Super Productive Things You Can Do When You’re Bored

The myth of productivity despises boredom. Our civilisation looks down on this absolutely natural state. Is boredom really the opposite of productiveness? Does not doing anything should be perceived as wrong? Well, we’re not at all suggesting that you should slack around doing absolutely nothing thought it is sometimes tempting. We’re just thinking it should be ok to let your mind get bored sometimes.

  2. 2. 15 super productive things you can do when you’re bored The myth of productivity despises boredom.
  3. 3. let your mind wonder Creativity is born from… boredom. Melanie Jean Juneau suggested even that kids need time to get bored as that is the way creativity is born. When bored do not stress yourself about the things you could have done. Do not push yourself intentionally into productivity as this may be counter-productive. Instead just fool around and try to something creative, even if you think this is a waste of time. Anyway… do not feel always guilty about it! Legendary Psychoanalyst Adam Phillips wrote an amazing book on Why the Capacity for Boredom Is Essential for a Full Life. You can read about it in a very good review by Maria Popova from the Brain Pickings. CLICK TO READ THE ARTICLE
  4. 4. have your favourite coffee Coffee boosts productivity – it is a well proven fact. It not only stimulate the adenosine receptors, it is healthy and helps fight away stress. Make sure it is not instant crap but a true to form espresso or espresso based coffee drink. Preparing it should also be a pleasant ritual. You can even meditate the crema! Take time and observe it and than take time to appreciate it. Like the Italians appreciate ‘dolce far niente’ – sweet doing nothing.
  5. 5. Work on your mental health Try doing mental exercises that help you focus on positive experiences and mindfulness to alleviate you of what you’re perceiving as boredom. A few simple steps towards improving your mental health can go a long way, not only towards productivity but your happiness in general. With the aim of teaching as many people as possible to be happier, The Happiness Institute offers a range of services based on extensive research, particularly from the growing field of positive psychology. It is one of my favourite resources to look for solutions based on the science of positive psychology. CLICK TO VISIT THE HAPPINESS INSTITUTE
  6. 6. Work on your physical health To tired or bored to do something really meaningful? Try just walking! If you don’t have a lot of energy to do something mental, hopefully you at least have the energy to partake in a physical activity. Some productive things to do when bored are running, walking, biking and lifting weights. Any kind of exercise is likely to free you from boredom. Providing you feel like being freed from it. Looking for motivation and inspiration? Visit Sophie Guidolin’s blog. It is based around everything from a healthy eating lifestyle to clean eating with children and everything in between . You’ll find a more holistic approach to physical health. CLICK TO VISIT SOPHIE’S BLOG
  7. 7. Do something arty Even if you are not an artist or do not consider yourself very artistic. Creative activities like painting or creative writing could be the perfect productive things to do when bored. And if you are looking for inspiration , you might want to visit some great blogs, like 2craftand2create. CLICK TO VISIT 2CRAFTANDTOCREATE
  8. 8. Work on your… work Work is probably the hardest thing to do when bored, but it’s still possible to muscle through the lethargy and get things done. If you’re unmotivated, remind yourself that your time best spent is doing the work that pays your income. A cash incentive goes a long way towards productivity. One of my favourite blogs on productivity is Zen Habits – a blog with a totally different approach to the subject of productivity and lifehacking. CLICK TO VISIT ZENHABITS
  9. 9. think good culture Tristan White from Culture is Everything blog focuses on a different kind of culture – the organisational one. And I think it is great idea to think of this kind of culture every time you are bored. What are the values, what is important, what matters? Tristan White from Culture is Everything will guide you through the world of good organisational culture. His blog is a great resource to start with. CLICK TO VISIT TRISTAN'S BLOG
  10. 10. consume good food Not to eat but to nourish yourself. And that is the most important distinction. And remember it is truly a myth that good things are not healthy things. It just happens that artificially sweet things are highly addictive. But preparing a good quality meal when bored can set your creative spirits free. Christina Soong a writer, recipe developer, photographer, stylist and consultant from the Hungry Australian blog can help you with that – she is an amazing source of inspiration. 11. 11. consume knowledge When you’re bored is an opportune time to learn. Productive things to do when bored might be to read how-to books or watch YouTube tutorials. Or read good blogs. Or have coffee and read good blogs. Gregory Ciotti – a contributor at Entrepreneur says “As healthy food fuels the body, so does brain food fuel the mind. Garbage in, garbage out as they say.” To learn how to differentiate between what matters and what matters less, read his article CLICK TO READ GREGORY’S ARTICLE
  12. 12. consume meaningful information Not to just digest but to understand the world better. Information isn’t the same as knowledge. Are there names, terms, dates, statistics or something similar you need to ingrain in your head? Studying data is one of the most productive things you can do when bored. The apps can put the world’s event in the palm of your end, completely with tailored recommendations and the ability to share content among flagship social networks, rendering them easy to access and share no matter your location or choice of smartphone. You can try one of those. We love them CLICK TO DISCOVER FLIPBOARD CLICK TO DISCOVER FEEDLY CLICK TO DISCOVER DIGG
  13. 13. eliminate clutter & distractions One of the reasons you’re not as prolific as you want, may be that you have too much clutter. Productive things to do when bored include tidying up your desk, removing books you’ll never read from your bookshelf and deleting the smartphone apps you never use. This also helps eliminate distractions in the most natural way. JOSHUA BECKER from Becoming Minimalist says “Our world has become a constant feed of information, noise, and entertainment” and suggests 10 unconventional to live distraction-less CLICK TO VISIT BECOMING MINIMALIST
  14. 14. eliminate worries & concerns Are you worried about something? Is that concern getting in the way of your productivity? Deal with the problems that are keeping you from spending your time as well as you should. Examples include tasks like double-checking your schedule and sending follow-up emails. By removing all of your stressors, you’ll be a lot more prolific. As the psychologists from the HelpGuide.org say “Worrying can be helpful when it spurs you to take action and solve a problem. But if you’re preoccupied with “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios, worry becomes a problem.” To learn more about the self-help visit their site to discover the free resources.
