Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago said that Chicago Fed
National Activity Index rose to a seasonally adjusted 0.20,
from 0.53 in the preceding month whose figure was re-
vised up from 0.14.Analysts had expected Chicago Fed
National Activity Index to rise 0.20 last month
China will maintain self-sufficiency in its main food
crops, including wheat and rice, in the coming decade,
said an agricultural report released yesterday. However,
the country is likely to see continued increase in its food
imports. The report, China Agricultural Outlook 2014-23,
released by the Agricultural Information Institute of the
Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, estimates that
China's annual output of three main crops - wheat, rice
and corn - would surge to 578 million metric tons in
2023, still maintaining a high self-sufficiency rate. The
total demand for these crops would hit 596 million tons
by then. The nation's foodgrain output hit 602 million
tons in 2013, the 10th consecutive year of increased grain
harvests, the annual output of rice is expected to rise to
204 million tons in 2023 .
COMMODITY BUZZ
The Commerce Ministry today pitched for removal of restric-
tions on gold imports saying it is not sustainable in the long-
run."The present gold import policy is workable only for a
short distance. When this policy was conceptualized it was
for a limited objective...the Department of Commerce has
taken a very clear decision that this policy is not sustainable
in the long-run," Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher said at an
event. He further said it needs to appropriately amended. In
order to check rising current account deficit (CAD), the gov-
ernment had raised import duties and the RBI had imposed
curbs on import of the metal.
Hailing the Supreme Court order on mining in Goa, stake-
holders today said the state and Central governments should
collectively work towards early resumption of iron ore ex-
traction activity. The top court today allowed an annual cap
of 20 million tonnes of iron ore to be extracted in Goa which
was banned by it in the state for nearly one-and-a-half years.
The state and Central governments should work together to
restart the mining industry as soon as possible.
