2. LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to:
Describe the functions of hardware components of a
Define some terms associated with the workings of the
central processing unit.
5. Power supply unit
Power supply unit is a hardware component
that supplies power to other components inside the system
unit by converting an alternating current to a direct current
from standard wall outlets or directly from batteries.
Slots are physical connection points on a motherboard that
allow the hardware of a computer to be expanded.
Examples include RAM and Expansion cards.
RAM Slots PCI Slots
RandomAccess Memory is a hardware component where
the operating system (OS), application programs and data
in current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by
the computer’s processor.
9. Cmos chip and battery
CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) is a
chip on the motherboard that contains BIOS configuration,
date, time and other information that the computer needs
during startup. The CMOS battery supplies power to the
CMOS chip, even when the computer is shut down.
10. Heat sink
Heat sink is a thermal conductive metal device designed to
absorb and disperse heat away from a high temperature
object such as a computer’s processor.
It is a type of storage medium that permanently stores
software instructions also known as firmware needed to
startup a personal computer and other electronic devices.
A motherboard is an electronic circuit board in a computer
which interconnects hardware devices attached to it. Other
names for this electronic circuit board are; system board,
mainboard, or printed wired board (PWB).
