OS Assignment Feb 2022-١ (2).pdf
1. What am I required to do in this assignment?
Introduction
One of the main tasks of an operating system is scheduling processes to run on the CPU. A good understanding of how a CPU
scheduling algorithm works is essential to understanding how an Operating System works.
The assignment
This is an individual assignment. In this assignment, you will create presentation slides based on process management, CPU
scheduling algorithms and present the findings. This assessment contributes 40% towards the overall grade.
You may choose any of the topics given below:
Topics:
1. Discuss the different types of Operating Systems.
2. Discuss the Functions of Operating Systems.
3. With a process state diagram discuss the different states of a Process.

Assignment number and title Assignment 1 – Individual Presentation
Assessment type Individual Presentation (1-A)
Weighting of assessment 40%
Module learning outcomes 1. Describe and analyze the principles underlying the design and construction of operating
systems and to differentiate the trade-offs existing in employing certain algorithms.
2. Demonstrate an appreciation of the complexity of computer systems and to describe in detail
how the main components of an operating system work.
2. 2
4. With an example discuss the Bankers Algorithm.
5. Compare any three Pre-emptive Scheduling Algorithms.
6. Compare Preemptive and Non-Preemptive algorithms using examples.
7. Discuss the different conditions for a Deadlock.
8. Discuss with examples the Shortest Remaining First Algorithm.
9. Compare the pre-emptive and Non-Preemptive type of Priority Algorithm.
10. Compare SRTF, Pre-emptive Priority and Round Robin Algorithms.
11. Multiprogramming and Multitasking OS
12. Threads and the benefits of multi-threading with suitable examples.
13. Protection and Security in Operating systems.
Submission
Presentation slides should be prepared in MS PowerPoint using the following guidelines:
Introduction
Brief Description of the selected topic. Outline the topic; State the significance of the topic.
Content
Main Body which includes the method used (algorithm) and results (images/graphs).
It should convey the key information. Use schematic diagrams, graphs, tables and other strategies to direct the visual
attention of the viewer, rather than explaining it using text. It is not allowed to convert text to graphics.
Conclusion/Summary
The conclusion should briefly summarize the results of your presentation without repeating too much.
References
Well Researched and References sources used should be clearly referenced using Harvard format.
For Operational Guidelines refer to Student Handbook Section IV: ASSESSMENTS.
NOTE: It is not allowed to convert text to graphics

Deliverables
Presentation MUST be submitted on-line (through MOVE) in week 8. This submission will be checked through Turnitin for
Plagiarism. The presentation should be presented in week 9 for 10 minutes (2-3 minutes explicitly for Question & Answers).
Note:
The presentation file will not be accepted if the student did not attend the presentation time then the student will have to
appear for the referral after the semester gets over.
Is there a word limit (Number of Words ± 10%)?
NA
What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations)
• The presentation slides must be organized with a very little synthesis.
• At least some of the relevant dimensions must be discussed.
• Demonstrates few critical thinking and few analytical skills.
• Demonstrates satisfactory ability to evaluate, even if you are unable to provide enough reasoning and evidence.
• Demonstrates few decision-making skills, even without having any citations or references.
• Demonstrates satisfactory level of confidence evident from adequate level of subject knowledge and preparation.
• Demonstrates an ability to understand the questions only at the surface level, respond with some explanation, focus
and reasoning.
• Some confidence demonstrate through language, expression and body language seems artificial. Rarely keeps eye
contact.
How do I produce high quality work that merits a higher grade?
• The slides must be clearly structured and well synthesized, a logical flow of information slides that enhances the
arguments.
• Presents in-depth information on the chosen topic. Multiple viewpoints are presented and wide variety of sources is
cited.
• Demonstrates excellent critical thinking and analytical skills
• Excellent confidence evident from command over subject knowledge, preparation. Confidence demonstrated through
language, expression and body language. Maintains continuous eye contact
• Demonstrates an excellent ability to understand the essence of questions, responds with confidence with clear
explanation, focus and reasoning.
How does assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
• During the first 5 to 6 weeks, the topics related to this assignment are discussed in detail during the class. Discussion is
based on the different functions of the OS, Various CPU scheduling Algorithms, different types of OS, Process

Management and Deadlocks in OS. Note that you will also be expected to do some research to prepare your
presentations.
5. How will my assignment be marked?
