25 percent of lesbians and 20 percent of gay men have actually attempted suicide. Gay males are 6 times more likely to make an attempt then heterosexual males.,[object Object],Lesbians are more than twice as likely to try committing suicide than the heterosexual women in studies. ,[object Object],A majority of the suicide attempts by homosexuals take place at age 20 or younger with nearly one-third occurring before age 17.,[object Object],One-third (33.2%) of transgender youth have attempted suicide.,[object Object]

On October 8th, 2010 the New York Times ran a story about a 16 year old, four 17 year olds, a 21, 22 and 23 year old going under the name the “Latin King Goonies” luring a 30 year old gay man to an abandoned house. Before the older man got there they targeted two other 17 year olds, beating them and torturing them for being gay. When the older man got there the nine boys tied him up and tortured him through the night. They beat him and burned various parts of his body. The victims names have not been released. Two of the attackers haven’t been found.,[object Object]

There were 6,604 criminal incidents characterized as hate crimes reported in the United States in 2009, according to an FBI report released.Nearly 19 percent of the crimes were due to a person’s sexual orientation.,[object Object],That is roughly 1254 reported hate crimes committed against Gay and Lesbian Americans in 2009. ,[object Object],According to the Gay and Lesbian human rights organization, an estimated 75% of hate crimes against the community go unreported. Many victims remain silent out of fear of losing their jobs or homes in states where Gay and Lesbian Americans are not protected against workplace or housing discrimination. Still others fear retribution from homophobic police officers.,[object Object]
