The document provides a reflection and evaluation by Emma Garthwaite of her work on creating a magazine and website for a beauty/makeup publication. Some key points:
- She reflects on the planning, research, and drafting process, noting what worked well and aspects that could be improved. This included flat plans, mood boards, and mind maps to develop ideas.
- Her front cover design went through several drafts incorporating feedback. While she likes the final version, she wishes she had not changed the original color scheme as much.
- The double page spread was improved by cutting out photos instead of using block images, but layout could still be refined.
- Additional practice on skills like photo editing
2. Front page progress
Firstly I got the main idea that I wanted with an existing
photo which I think was a good way of starting. It definitely
helped me realize wat I wanted to do for my front cover. I
firstly found a background similar as I wanted something
simple which looked okay but also wasn’t as eye catching as I
wanted to be. I think the colour scheme I used to match with
the eye make up worked really well and I do kind of wish id
kept this incorporated. I personally just think that it tied
everything together better. I learnt a lot of skills within photo
shop such as smoothing tools and the blemish tool. This will
help me when I need to smooth images out or hide certain
things within images if I come to do print again as my big
project. The text was also something I liked getting used to.
Using certain effects on it to make it stand out more on the
page and make certain things more noticeable which is
helpful with any project as there are always things you need
to make more noticeable and knowing what to add to make
that happen is a very important thing to know.
3. Front page progress
As for this version which was after my initial draft. This was also after I had got feedback on my work
on survey monkey. This helped me have a fresh perspective of what other peoples opinions were on
my work and see what they thought needed improving. I definitely thought this was a helpful way of
learning what looks good to an audience and what doesn't. Also what catches peoples eyes in a
positive way so I get to see what was right with my magazine which was things like the lighting of the
photo and the editing of the photo. However things such as the background being to bland and it just
looking generally bland was a problem that came up a lot. Therefore I changed the background to
something more interesting which led to me changing the colour scheme a lot more. Part of me
wishes that I hadn’t changed the colour scheme so much as I think the previous colour scheme went
with the main idea of the article I wanted to do about the specific eye shadow palette which was warm
toned so I do think I should’ve kept it the same to completely tie everything together and link the
article with the colour scheme. On the other hand I do really like the current colour scheme and the
way that the purple and green contrast but also compliment each other and make everything stand out
more. Also the connotations of purple are luxury and that foreshadows the luxury brands that would
be covered within this magazine.
4. Front Page Finished
This is my finished front page that I did. I still stick by wishing I hadn’t changed the colour scheme and
next time I think I will stick with my gut feeling at first. With this one what I changed was mostly the text.
I gave the text more drop shadow which added more depth to it and helped it be more prominent against
the background. Also with the main taglines I put a stroke around the edge of it in a yellow/green colour
which helped the text stand out more a lot within darker backgrounds and make the text a lot more eye
catching. I did this wit the title as well which again helped it stand out against the smaller tag lines within
the cover. The editing from the last one to this one was just about little details because after getting more
peer feedback it was clear that I still needed to do some slight improvements to make it better and some
of the text wasn’t readable so it needed something else to it. Which is why I added the stroke. I think this
will be helpful when I come back to print for if I use more complicated backgrounds with text over them.
This knowledge will be helpful if I was to put text on a video as well when I go back to film. I also colour
picked the purple from the lipstick mark to make al the colours pull together and make it so it worked
together more. Also the darker purple contrasted with the background more therefore made it more
prominent within the whole cover.
5. Comparison – Front Page
My Work Professional example
These front covers, although very different, also have similarities.
They have a main photo of a model. Although mine is a lot
smaller that the other one which I think was because I wanted
enough space to put my tag lines which looking back on wasn’t
the best move I wish I’d made it bigger. Both models have
airbrushed skin to give the idea that they have better skin than
they do. They both also have main colour schemes, the Elle one
has the grey and yellow with white text for more subtle tag lines.
Where as mine has the purple, green and black for smaller
taglines. My background is a lot more busier that the other one as
well but I don’t think that’s specifically a problem with my image
being bright enough or it to stand out against anything else which
was important due to the photo being the most important thing
to me to catch peoples eyes as then people would notice the make
up and be drawn in. I definitely think the Elle magazine is more
minimalistic compared to mine.
6. Double Page Spread
This was my first double page spread. I did quite like the idea of it. I
think I actually prefer this version of my double page spread to my next
one. I was tying to create a step by step tutorial with the gradual photos
I took while doing the models make up which was a good idea I just
think it could have been done in a better way rather than just putting the
block photos into it. I do like the simple style of the background a I
think it draws your attention to everything else more which is what I
wanted, I wanted the attention to be more on the photo side of it. I
wanted there to be more images than text in that ratio as well. I don’t
think this was a bad way to start out. I just needed to match it with the
colour scheme change. I also wanted it to be more artistic and look
better put together than this.
7. Double Page Spread Progress
This was my second attempt at a double page spread. I was trying to
incorporate the colour scheme I’d used within the front cover. I also
tried to cute the photos out more so they look less blocky and square as
I think it looked better in the idea of the photos and the background
with the text as it makes things more outstanding within the page as a
whole. I also liked the link with the lipstick mark on the front page and
the DPS. However I do not like the page as a whole. I thought it looked
too bland and there is too much negative space. Looking back on it I like
the techniques I used to improve it because I think the photos look
more professional however I don’t like the general layout of everything
as I think it looks unprofessional and sloppy.
8. Finished Double Page Spread
This was a final draft. I think it could still do with some
improvements such as I’m not the biggest fan of the title however it
may look better once exported. With this one I Definitely prefer the
pictures in this, I really like the layout and the general idea of having
quite a few images overlapping at the bottom of the page. I think the
text looks a little bulky and if I have time I’m going to wrap it round
the images so it flows easier around the page. I will also do a better
title. This double page spread is a big improvement from my last one.
I definitely don’t think its perfect but I think its a lot better than my
past ones. I liked the idea of cutting the photos out to make it less
boxy which I think worked a lot better and made it look a lot more
professional and put together. Everything worked smoothly therefore
I am happy with it and I still think this was the general idea I was
going for minus the step by step tutorial I wanted to put in but I
wasn’t sure how to make that work.
9. Comparison - DPS
Mine Professional
First thing you notice when comparing these
two are the colour schemes. Mine is a lot more
colourful where as the other one is more
simplistic. I liked the idea of keeping the colour
scheme from the front page which I’m not sure
whether I still stand by that decision or not.
There is also more of an equal photo to text
ratio in the professional one as there is one page
with one photo and one page with text. I didn’t
want to do that as I wanted mine to be more
artistic due to make up being a way of
expressing yourself. I do like the way that
they’ve got the big quote from someone here as
I have a smaller quote after my article which
could’ve definitely been bigger. However the
professional one is a fashion magazine as I
couldn’t find and beauty ones on issuu therefore
they are bound to be a lot different.
10. Website
This was my first draft of my website I wanted a lot of photos
of different looks to give ideas of what make up the magazine
covered. The colour scheme was originally to match my first
drafts of everything else. With the light beige and pink tones I
thought it looked very feminine and minimalistic. I liked the
fonts within this website design I chose as a template and I did a
general idea this time with other peoples images just to get an
idea of what I wanted it to look like. This helped me learn what I
was sure I wanted to include and what I didn't want to include.
With it being my first draft it was very hit and miss and I was
including things I wasn’t sure if I wanted them in as they didn't
look as good as I thought they would. It also helped me get to
grips with wix as a website creator and learn how everything
worked and how to do things that I wanted to do.
11. Website progress
This was the second draft of my website where I had
put in my photos to give a better idea of the layout it
would give with my own photos therefore I could really
plan it out. I originally wanted a slide show of the looks
I wanted but the pictures weren’t good enough quality to
do this so I learnt that some things you want don’t
always work out the way you want them to. Therefore I
settled for a collage of all the photos I wanted to post
on the website which I think worked just as well if not
better because you get a quick overview of what make
up the magazine covers and what kind of things the
editors like. This also gave me a better idea of how to
use wix. I learnt things like how to change the fonts or
colour schemes which is why the colour scheme wasn’t
full what I wanted because again it was a lot of playing
around again.
12. Finished Website
This was my final version of my website. This was when id
learnt more about what I was doing with wix and found
what I really wanted to do. I kept the colour scheme from
the front cover and the double page spread and
incorporated them into the colour scheme of the website.
The purple and green work so well together especially with
these specific shades. I tried a few different colour
schemes within this project to work out what I liked best
and I think the purple and green really stood out to me.
One thing that I found helpful was learning how to go
from page to page to be able to edit each page. For
example I had a page for my latest issue of the magazine
and a layout of what it included to draw the audience in.
13. Comparison - Website
These two websites are very different looking but also fairly similar in different ways. Such as My own website is a lot more colourful that the other one as
the professional one is more white base than anything else with a slight part of blue in the border. However they are both very simplistic and have a lot of
images within the front page of make up looks. The categories are different between them though which means they will both have different content. The
professional one has more articles that they have used as well where as I only included one article and this was only a top 10 make up products which was
more of an “editors picks” than an article. The fonts are similar though they both have rather similar simple text although the professional ones text is a
lot larger than mine which is a smart move due to it then drawing your eyes to the title over anything else.

14. Reflection – Research
The research we did was to look at magazines and their websites that already exist and picking things apart from them to help
inspire what we wanted to do within our own work. I did three different magazines. One music, one animal one and a car
magazine. I clearly realized I didn't want to do any of these categories but these were the ones that interested me at first
which were still strong subjects I am passionate about however once I started planning I realized how hard the photography
part of it would be for things such as animals and cars for me as I don’t have any cool cars and I don’t have many pets. As for
the music I wasn’t sure what to write as an article when it came to that part so I changed my mind completely and went for
something that I was still passionate about and I knew what I wanted to do fully with it. This thought process helped me
realise what I really wanted to do which helped me when it came to researching things I wanted to write about. This form of
research helped me work out what magazines needed to look more professional and what I wanted mine to be set out like.
Such as ideas for colour schemes and how magazines link their magazine to their websites and how they keep certain things
like colour schemes and font style carrying on throughout the front cover, inside the content and in their websites. I liked the
form of research we did as it helped me learn what kind of design route I wanted to go down within my own work. I do wish
id done some more research on beauty magazines though when I decided what I wanted to do in hindsight. I think the
research helped a lot with working out what magazines and websites consisted of.
15. Reflection - Planning
The planning process was pretty simple after the research process, I had a good idea of what I knew I wanted to do within
my magazine and the kind of style I wanted to stick with even if I didn't end up sticking with what I was expecting to. I
definitely am happy with what I ended up deciding on and I did plan things to do with my final idea that I decided on. We did
all sorts of planning for this project. Such as flat plans which were a big help within the layout side of things. I also did a
mood board which helps a lot within the style side of things. Originally with my original idea which was a music magazine the
idea was to do a certain few artists styles of photo shoots that they do and I got photos for my mood board to get inspiration
from them. As for my beauty/make up magazine I got inspiration for looks I wanted to recreate for the cover and looked at
what new products are being talked about in the media at this point in time that I actually had myself so that I could actually
use the product for the photoshoot to get the real effect and to be able to give a full review. I also did a mind map of what
genres I could of done to make sure I had a full idea of what I wanted to do as my magazine. It also was to help me work out
what articles I wanted to write. The amount of planning really helped and I do think the amount of planning that goes into
something reflects in the final product.
16. Reflection – Final product
Looking back at my work I am pleased with it. I have learnt so many techniques such as the blemish tool and liquify filters on
photo shop. I also had never used In design before so everything I learnt within in design was new to me. Considering the
fact that most the things I have learnt within this project I think it went quite well. I like the colour scheme although I think it
could’ve matched the make up look I was covering a little better although because the red clashed it stood out a little more. I
also think that I could’ve added a little more detail to my website as well and maybe more animation. I think the best thing ive
done was my front cover as I think I’ve learnt to make a mock up of something first and do a few drafts before doing the
main thing rather than just diving into what I know I want and thinking that’s it. I like the fact that we have had more time to
practice with things within print. Within the irn bru project I didn’t practice as much as I think the thought within things
shows within things such as this. I have also learnt that not always everything you do after your first mock up is specifically
better than your first mock up. In the future what I will do is make a few different versions and compare them all, working
out which one I like best and work from there. I wont get any feedback until I am sure which one I like best and what I know
I like about it.
