The dilemma of the neighborhood board
1. Name: Emilio Moreno Chávez (A01451252)
Title: The Dilemma of the Neighborhood Board
Objective: Identify emotions and manage an action plan
Context: This is your first year as leader of your neighborhood board; lately, you have thought about
not continuing with this job because some of the residents have been calling you constantly to
complain about the cleanliness of the common areas, the lack of security, and the poor lighting in the
neighborhood.
You have been very patient, and you are always willing to listen to your community, and as such you
have even received calls at dawn from complaining neighbors. As much as you have tried to help and
pay attention to them in a cordial way, you question whether continuing with this commitment is
worthwhile since you feel worn down.
You have always been aware of the responsibility that comes with living in a community and, being
a new neighborhood, it needs people who want to participate and be open-minded like you.
1. Includes a self-diagnosis based on self-knowledge.
Self-knowledge is critical to self-management; we must ask ourselves: what am I like? Am I
really the way I think I am? Am I aware of my emotions and what causes them? Reviewing
the context of the situation given, if I’m really thinking about not continuing with this job in
my first year as a leader then I might come to a conclusion that I’m not the right fit for this
job. The irritation and desperation that this is causing me should be a sign of how my
personality really is. Maybe I’m not as tolerant as I thought I was therefore, making this self-
diagnosis opens my eyes and brings me one step close to make a wise decision.
2. Includes a self-diagnosis based on emotional intelligence.
Combining self-knowledge and empathy together, is the basis of emotional intelligence.
Therefore, in this situation I need to put together my self-awareness, self-management, and
relationship management. I need to have the ability to understand why am I feeling like this
(worn down, irritated, not tolerant). I also need to manage my own emotions in positive
ways; maybe this can be a way out for not quitting this job and keep working hard for the
neighborhood.
3. Includes a self-diagnosis based on social intelligence.
Developing a self-diagnosis on social intelligence, we must first understand that this is the
capacity to really know oneself, as well to others around. I must analyze and identify “why”
and “how” others act or are in their persona. Looking back to my experiences with other
people and the learning I’ve gained from those failures and successes; this is an example of
how social intelligence develops and helps me create a self-diagnosis.
2. 4. Includes an action plan that has a self-development element.
A self-development element that I would choose in this situation which can include an action
plan is self-knowledge. I can achieve this with education and work, knowledge, and skills
update, and with a responsible and proactive attitude. I chose this element due to the context
of the situation. I need to know myself better before I decide to make a commitment with any
job. If I dominate this, I will make smarter decisions and as well as making a good job in
anything that I work on.
5. Includes an action plan that has a positive relationships element.
An action plan that has positive relationships element is to live in the gratitude cycle process.
Also invest my energy in enjoying a fulfilling and meaningful life. This can also help in this
situation, because we always need to be grateful and show gratitude; even for the things that
do not go as planned.
