What is Mission San Luis?
The Mission San Luis was among the largest and most important
missions in Spanish Florida. Its ancestors were Apalachee Indians
who were descendants of the village of Hernando de Soto. The
Apalachee Indians were the most culturally advanced of Florida’s
native people. The mission of San Luis was home to 1500
Apalachee.

Importance
The Mission of San Luis is still a historical
significance because it is still the only
reconstructed Spanish mission in Florida.
The state of Florida purchased it in 1983
and is being managed by Florida
Department of State’s Division of
Historical Resource.
What is the Castillo
San Cristóbal
• The importance of Castillo San Cristobal is
that it is considered as one of the biggest
fortresses built in the Americas! It was built to
protect the city of San Juan from attacks by
land by the east.
• It was built in 1634 by the Spanish settlers.
Several attacks were from the English/ British
in 1797 and was also used as a U.S. Army
base in 1961!(Castillo de San Cristobal)
