  1. 1. I’ll Fix it! Genesis 16
  2. 2. Big Idea …abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 1 Peter 2:11b 2
  3. 3. I’ll Fix it! Genesis 16
  4. 4. Christian Context Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through Galatians 4:21–31 (ESV) 4
  5. 5. Christian Context promise. Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. Galatians 4:21–31 (ESV) 5
  6. 6. Christian Context But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.” Now you, brothers, like Galatians 4:21–31 (ESV) 6
  7. 7. Christian Context Isaac, are children of promise. But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall Galatians 4:21–31 (ESV) 7

  13. 13. Big problem And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 13
  14. 14. Who could have foreseen this? So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. Genesis 16:3–4 14
  15. 15. Not going as planned Follow the flesh you get certain results. The Law would be given to restrain the flesh. The Promise was given to set us free. 15
  16. 16. Our Promise …so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:14 16

  18. 18. Whose Idea was this? Our ways are not the Lord’s way. God has a plan. Sari has a plan. 18
  19. 19. Pass the buck But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. Genesis 16:6 19
