  2. 2. School trips are an incredible opportunity for young minds that are constantly seeking information, experiences, and acquiring knowledge. In our experience, when these young minds go beyond the classroom, they cement and build upon curricular subjects and lessons. Outdoor learning helps the students develop a more holistic understanding of themselves, their skills, their curriculum, and how all this ultimately relates to the development of the world. Queen Mary’s School, Tis Hazari, is committed to create a vital link between learning in the classroom, the students’ inner lives, and the world at large. The pages that follow are representative of the aim of our institution, which is to take teaching beyond the walls of the classroom into the freedom of outward exploration and creativity. We chose this particular program to Uttarakhand for its unique approach to understand the chief historical and cultural aspects besides its special focus on wildlife conservation. We visited several places including Naini Lake and Jim Corbett National Park. Helping us to organise and implement this journey was a company that specialises in student education travel. EdTerra Edventures brings over ten years of experience of having helped over 30,000 students learn from the diversity of our planet. We are happy to state the success of this collaboration stemmed from a deep alignment of EdTerra Edventures vision with our own. We seek to make our students global citizens who actively understand and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Further, from EdTerra’s travel curriculum and to develop 21st Century Skills amongst millennial students, we opted for Student Media Projects especially EdTerra’s Travel Journalists Program. This magazine — Students Travel Chronicle (Jim Corbett – Nainital) is a product of our students’ concerted teamwork to write and collect their journey experiences and impressions in a comprehensive manner. We hope you will enjoy reading this Chronicle and have valuable points to take away from students’ experiences. Finally, we at Queen Mary’s School, Tis Hazari would like to acknowledge our teachers. The success of this journey is only possible with their responsible and informed efforts. We also thank our parents, who remain our most fervent partners and collaborators for the education of all the students who study and work together. Principal Dr. (Ms) Ritu P. 5. 5. Team Members Aafiya, Baharika, Diya, Kanishka, Sana S., Samya, Sanya, Vanshika, Tanya & Tejal Everyone should visit Jim Corbett National Park and Nainital because it is like a fresh breath of air. Everyone is somehow frustrated with their daily lives and surrounding yourself with nature, even with limited or basic necessities, will make you realise that you can live without a lot of things that you think. The journey started on a note where we all were nervous. We did not know what to expect from the journey but we were looking forward to it anyway. The night journey in the bus was full of music and laughter. When we finally reached the resort, we were in awe and full of giggles while checking into our rooms. Luckily, we got very spacious rooms. We had our breakfast, went to Girija Devi Temple and also enjoyed a live music performance. It started with the singer singing and ended as a music festival with lots of dancing. The Nainital trip was the most memorable one. We strolled around the streets, went to the temple, which was very peaceful. We ate from Domino’s and it was the best decision ever made. We went to a four-person paddle boat. We were scared at first but then ended up enjoying it so much. Then we went on the jungle safari in the morning and had a DJ night. The whole experience including the laughs, the late night talks, the views, dressing up and getting ready together, the pool time, the safari, crying because of homesickness, the food, panicking while losing stuff, dancing our hearts out; all these made our journey very memorable. It was an unforgettable experience. Everything we did here led to our happiness. OUR JOURNEY 01.
  6. 6. 07 OUR JOURNEY It was awe-inspiring to find out about these huge termite mounds created by such tiny termites We were transported to a different world after the soothing live performance Blessed with a natural bounty, Jim Corbett National Park has six hundred species of trees, shrubs, ferns, grass, climbers, herbs, and bamboo We had a great time strolling around the streets of the Tibetan Market for shopping
  7. 7. Team Members Aanya, Arshita, Avantika, Chanchala, Ilsa, Manya A., Riya, Tuba, Vania, Tanishka & Yashi Famed Hunter–turned–conservationist James Edward ‘Jim Corbett’ was born on July 25, 1875. He was a colonel in the British Indian Army and was known for the hunting of man-eating leopards and tigers. Jim Corbett was frequently called to the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to places where a large number of leopards limited for their prey. Corbett also played a key role in creating a national park reserve for endangered Bengal tigers. Did You Know? Project tiger is a tiger conservation program launched in April 1973 by the Government of India during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure. The park, which was named Hailey National Park at its inception in 1936, was renamed after Jim Corbett two decades later. Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand is located close to Nainital. The National Park is a favourite destination for people looking to spot tigers, making it one of the important national parks in India. 02. HISTORY OF JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK
  8. 8. 09 HISTORY OF JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK Towards the final hours of our educational trip, we decided to record our learnings as part of the Travel Journalists Program by EdTerra Edventures We learnt about the flora and fauna of Jim Corbett National Park — dominated by Sal, Oak and Pine Jim Corbett Park is located in the foothills of Himalayas and about 50 km northwest of its headquarters in Ramnagar We discovered that the area of the Corbett National Park came under the ambitious ‘Project Tiger’ in 1971
  9. 9. Team Members Aditi, Dakshita, Himani K., Ifra, Manya A., Nehal, Rachel, Saanvi, Sharmen, Suhani, Urva & Yashika We went on the jungle safari. At first, it actually felt a little boring since one of us was separated from our friend circle but our Journey Mentor made it interesting. Our Journey Mentor ensured that we had a lot of fun. We enjoyed seeing animals and trees. We didn’t get to see a tiger but saw its footprints. We really enjoyed clicking pictures of the natural scenery and ourselves. We picked some curry leaves as a souvenir and are going to preserve it. Overall, it was fun. Jungle Safari was fun even though we were tired. It was calming to be in the lap of nature. It was a peaceful time for one of our friend who was trying to write a good poem and document everything. We really enjoyed our Journey Mentor’s company. He was very enthusiastic and fun loving, which boosted our energy a little bit. We wanted to see a tiger so badly but we could only see the footprints. We saw a hornbill for the first time and got to see the spring water. The whole journey was very beautiful. We also saw deer twice, an elephant and some extremely naughty monkeys. We enjoyed standing on the jeep experiencing the wind but it took us time to untangle our hair. It was an open jeep and just looking around, talking to each other, clicking pictures and making videos was so much fun. It was an unforgettable experience. Thanks to the team of EdTerra Edventures for being so amazing. JUNGLE SAFARI 03.
  10. 10. 11 JUNGLE SAFARI Jungle safari was made all the more interesting by riding in an open jeep with beautiful landscapes We were thrilled with the prospects of spotting the Bengal Tiger On our jungle safari, we saw a variety of birds and animals that instilled in us the need to protect wildlife Our excitement built up as we boarded the jungle safari jeep
  11. 11. Team Members Aashita, Anoora, Ashnoor, Bhavya, Dakshita, Mujnazza, Nehal, Sadiya, Sania, Tannu & Warisha To be honest, we truly enjoyed the day we went to Nainital. First, we went from our resort to Mall Road in Nainital by bus. We had a fun and enjoyable journey as we finally reached Nainital. Our teachers, the team of EdTerra Edventures and all the students had a lot of fun. We went to Domino’s as we were a bit tired after the long bus journey. There we had an appetising pizza and some Pepsi. Then we were split into many groups, each group consisting of eight to ten students. Our group went to several places like Tibetan Market, House of Candy, a lake view café, and we also went for boating. We had some milkshakes and other drinks at the café. Our best experience on this whole trip took place on the last night of the trip. It was a starry night and to be honest we were sitting on the ground that was filled with stones and there we chatted and enjoyed our time. We made many memories here that we won’t forget. We loved spending the beautiful time with our friends in the last year of our school. We would like to thank EdTerra Edventures for giving us this opportunity. NAINITAL 04.
  12. 12. 13 NAINITAL We learnt that Naini lake was made due to action of tectonic plates in the Himalayan region We all came together for a group shot with the Naini Lake in the backdrop Posing on the last day of our trip at the Mall Road Naini lake is spread over two miles and has a depth ranging from six metres to twenty-eight metres
  13. 13. Team Members Akansha, Anusha, Ashna, Irfa, Kanishka, Louriya, Mehak, Palak, Rameesha, Rimjhim, Tenzey & Waniya Any imbalance in the natural surroundings on the account of human activity will lead to the extinction of species that are necessary for human survival. Thus, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, and national parks are designated places for protecting wild plants, animals and natural habitats. Owing to the biodiversity of Uttarakhand, protected areas make up twelve percent of all land including six National Parks, seven Wildlife Refuges, four Conservation Reserves, and one Biosphere Reserve. Do you know any sanctuary or national park that is declared as reserved by the central government? The powers and duties of that sanctuary or national park are given to the Chief Wildlife Warden and an authorised officer on behalf of the warden. Under the Wildlife Protection Act, the Chief Wildlife Warden is the designated individual who has full administrative control over Protected Areas located inside a state. Park visits help students connect what they learn in the classroom to experiences in nature. Unfortunately, we cannot visit a national park frequently as it is not in my state. 05.
