RÈGLE DU JEU – 1939
C'est toujours une bonne chose de ramener à l'écran un vieux film. C'est un morceau
d'histoire du cinéma en tant qu'art. Mais parfois, le contenu de ces films est surprenant, voire
franchement décevant.
Ce film a quelques bonnes qualités. L'action est très bien dominée et contrôlée de sorte
que le rythme est rapide et puissant. Les combats et les courses, un homme à la poursuite d'un
autre homme, avec les femmes qui jouent les obstacles et à la fois l'incitation et la dissuasion dans
la poursuite, une chasse à l'homme qui se terminera finalement par une personne abattue.
Mais le son est médiocre et cela fait que les dialogues ressemblent parfois à du latin parlé
avec un fort accent espagnol qui a des problèmes avec ses voyelles, ou est-ce ses intestins (Ah !
Ah ! Ça marche bien en anglais mais pas en français: pour les Espagnols vowels/voyelles et
bowels/intestins se prononcent de la même façon.) ? En un mot, ce n'est pas clair et
compréhensible. Je suis sûr que cela aurait pu être amélioré.
Mais le contenu est sans le moindre intérêt. Qui se soucie d'un "Monsieur le Marquis" qui
organise une chasse sur ses terres pour tuer des lapins et des faisans ? Qui se soucie du
braconnier local qui est promu laveur de bottes ou polisseur de bottes ou cireur de bottes par le
"Monsieur le Marquis", mais la femme du garde-chasse encourage le braconnier à braconner
quelques faveurs sous le nez de son mari et cela ne peut que mal finir. Vraimentr rien à cirer sinon
quelques bottes de chasse.
Le garde-chasse tue quelqu'un, et "Monsieur le Marquis" couvrira cet acte en le considérant
comme l'abattage légitime d'un braconnier – bien que dans ce cas, il ne s'agisse pas du tout d'un
braconnier – mais le garde-chasse pensait simplement qu'il s'agissait d'un braconnier, du moins
c'est ce qu'il dit et ce qu'il dira au tribunal si nécessaire, et cela fera l'affaire. Le garde-chasse est
aussi propre qu'un sou neuf.

Une caricature d’une quelconque situation sociale qui n'a rien à voir avec l'amour, la
jalousie et les conventions sociales protégeant l'élite et ses serviteurs. D.H. Lawrence a fait
beaucoup plus et mieux dans ce domaine avec Lady Chatterley et son amant.

Note how the English title plays on “game,” “gamekeeper,” “hunt,” and a few other words
connected to that game of shooting innocent animals or people like rabbits or pheasants.
It is always a good thing to bring back to the screen, an old film. It is a piece of history about
the cinema as an art. But at times the content of such films is surprising if not frankly disappointing.
This film has some good qualities. The action is very well dominated and controlled so that
the rhythm is fast and powerful. The fights and the running around, one man chasing another man,
with the women who play obstacles and both incitation and deterrent in the chase, a manhunt that
will eventually end up with one person shot dead.
But the sound is mediocre and that makes the dialogue sound, at times, like Latin spoken
with a strong Spanish accent that has problems with his vowels, or is it his bowels? In one word it
is not clear and understandable. I am sure that could have been improved.
But the content is without any interest at all. Who cares about a “Monsieur le Marquis” who
is having a hunt on his land to kill rabbits and pheasants? Who cares about the local poacher who
is promoted boot-cleaner or boot-polisher or boot-shiner by the “Monsieur le Marquis,” but the wife
of the gamekeeper encourages the poacher to poach some favors from herself under the nose of
her husband and that can only end badly.

The gamekeeper kills someone, and it will be covered up by “Monsieur le Marquis” as a
legitimate shooting of a poacher – though in this case, it is not a poacher at all – but the
gamekeeper just thought it was a poacher, or so he says and will say in court if necessary, and
that will do the business. The gamekeeper is as clean as a mint silver dollar.
A caricature of any social situation that has nothing to do with love, jealousy, and social
conventions protecting the elite and their servants. D.H. Lawrence has done a lot more and better
in this field with Lady Chatterley and her lover.
