Workflow (in progress)

• Current status of accident cost calculations in the European countries:
– General structure of valuation methods:
• complies with recommendations of former EU projects (Component structure, valuation
methods), e.g. COST 313, HEATCO, UNITE
– Definitions of ‘fatality’ and ‘injured victim’
• ‘Fatality’ is defined consistently in all EU countries
• ‘Seriously injured’ has very different definitions
– Components and the included items
• Different combinations in every country (see next slide)
– Underreporting
• Is considered in very few countries
Accident cost calculation in EU countries and
its adaptation concerning VRU safety
www.indev-project.eu
• Inclusion of the additional injury category ‘MAIS 3+’
• Average unit costs per casualty
– Include medical costs, production loss and human costs
– Not included: property damage and administrative costs
• Dealing with Underreporting

Next Deliverable: Development of calculation options with an emphasis on VRU
Injury: slight < serious < ‘MAIS3+‘ < fatal
• What type validation is best/feasible?
• What conflict indicators are most valid?
• Performance improvement of technical tools
• Accident cost calculation: What are the options to adapt it to VRU?
• Handbook of safety analysis for vulnerable road users
