Dylan P (host) : You’re tuning into Radio D 96.5, the local station you love where the best music is
made and played. I am most excited to introduce to you Tomiwa Abiola, a top NFL prospect currently
playing for Michigan Wolverines, stealing the college spotlight
Tomiwa A : Thank you for having me on your show
Dylan P (host) : The pleasure is mine. So we’re just going to go straight into it, I’m going to ask you a
few questions for the listeners at home who are eager as I’m sure to understand the man behind the
highlights
Tomiwa A : I’m ready
Dylan P (host) : So first off, how did you manage to make an American college team growing up in
England, where football, well American football, isn’t the biggest of sports?
Tomiwa A : Honestly, it was down to luck. I was initially playing rugby coming into high school, but
my family were always big on American football, so I just sorta’ fell into it and developed a love for it
and wanted to start playing it at a competitive level. Now this is where the story picks up, I signed up
for some tryouts, not far from the studio actually…
Dylan P (host) : Oh really?!
Tomiwa A : Yeah yeah, at the Redgrave Sports Centre, literally just down the road from here
Dylan P (host) : Oh of course, really good facility there
Tomiwa A : *kmt*, you obviously haven’t been to America
2. Dylan P (host) : *laughing* yeah
Tomiwa A : But anyway, I pull up to these tryouts and I’m like what… 6ft 81 kg coming into second
year high school, soooo that’s… year 10?
Dylan P (host) : Year 10 yeah… wow so you were a big kid then!
Tomiwa A : Well I mean everyone was a lot smaller than me for sure, and so I stood out in these
trails and just everywhere I went with football, even if I wasn’t the most technically sound player I
was just big and Athletic. Then one day, my friend’s dad is driving us home from practice, and his dad
just turns round to me and says, “I know a fellah interested in you ‘Wa” – that’s what they used to call
me “Wa”- and as it turns out, this guy interested me was like some college scout…
Dylan P (host) : Damn!
Tomiwa A : Yeah, apparently my friends dad and this scout go way back, like primary school days but
became distant. Anyway, this guy only saw me play once
Dylan P (host): Once?!
Tomiwa A: Exactly, so that’s why it was luck because he obviously just seen me stand out amongst
these smaller kids even though my actual footballing ability and knowledge for the game wasn’t the
greatest, he still decided to take a chance on me and well… the rest is history
Dylan P (host) : Well there you have it, that’s how one of the greatest college corner backs began his
path to the NFL. Now I’m gonna move swiftly onto the next question, at such a young age , how do
you manage to stay so humble and not let the overnight fame effect you?
Tomiwa A : Oooo good question… I guess [long pause] I guess I just try not to read too deeply into
the comments on social media and like dwell on the hate or hype I receive and you know, just stay in
my lane and focus on being the best version of myself I can be whether that be on or off the field
Dylan P (host) : Right, and would you say that your career gets in the way of your personal life?
Tomiwa A : I mean of course, but you know that’s my choice and that’s just the lifestyle, I feel obliged
to be the best at my craft and what I do because at the end of the day its what I’m devoting my life to
so I wanna be the best at it, a contract in the NFL is also a major motivation for me, because that’s
3. when I feel my work has paid off and I’ll be able to make my name heard and pour my heart out to
what ever team takes me on
Dylan P (host) : Perfect, well that’s all we have time for today with Tomiwa, thank you for your time
I’m going to let you get back to your busy schedule
Tomiwa A : Anytime, pleasure to be here
