Immigration <ul><li>America is a Nation of immigrants. Somewhere down the line you will find that everyone’s ancestors have come from somewhere other than America. The earliest Native Americans may have even walked here on a land bridge from Siberia to present day Alaska. The majority of immigrants came from Europe up till the twentieth century. At present, the majority of immigrants come from Asia, Mexico, Native America, and the Caribbean. The number of people immigrating to America has increased from the past. There are up to one million immigrants coming into America each year plus 500,000 undocumented entrants who are coming in illegally. This means greater impact on America’s population growth, the economy, schools, and welfare and healthcare systems. The question is, does immigration hurt or help America? </li></ul>

Who Supports Immigration and why? FACTS OPINIONS <ul><li>Thomas Donohue, president of U.S. Chamber of Commerce-from 1996-2002 more than 90% of employment growth was ascribed to foreign workers and the New England parts of the country </li></ul><ul><li>Thomas Donahue- foreign workers make up approximately 11% of U.S. population and 14% of the labor force </li></ul><ul><li>Thomas Donohue- the U.S. economy has projected 22 million U.S. jobs by the end of this decade but the work force growth has projected to be only 17 million </li></ul><ul><li>Ernesto Zedillo, President of Mexico- supports unrestricted immigration and says that much of Mexico lies in the United States </li></ul><ul><li>Billy Strasberger- the employers are not complaining so we should be satisfied </li></ul><ul><li>Robert Parry- supports unrestricted immigration and says it is crucial to the U.S. economy, especially in California </li></ul>

FACTS OPINIONS <ul><li>National research Counsel(1997)-every household in California was paying $1178 a year in both state and local taxes to cover services used by immigrants </li></ul><ul><li>U.S. Department of Labor- The unemployment rate for white teenagers was 15.3% with 892,000 unemployed and 270,000 black teenagers(35%) were out of work </li></ul><ul><li>Paul Harrington, center for labor market studies at Northeastern University- study this month found immigrants displaced U.S. workers in the last three years </li></ul><ul><li>George Borjas, Professor at Harvard- Immigration is causing wages to decrease for low-income workers which widens the U.S. income gap and displaces Americans in the income gap </li></ul><ul><li>Alan Auerbach, Economics Professor at University of California (Berkley)- Immigration burdens the government at state and local level </li></ul><ul><li>Jim Lott, executive vice President of the hospital Assn. of Southern California- we are in health care meltdown in Los Angeles county due to immigrants </li></ul>

My Position on Leading Issues Question # 1 Q: Should immigration be unrestricted? A: No, unrestricted immigration displaces U.S. workers and increases need for education and healthcare. Our taxes pay for many of their needs and they don’t pay any taxes. We need to have more control on our borders and regulate the amount of immigrants coming in.

My Position on Leading Issues Question # 2 Q: Does unrestricted immigration help or hurt the U.S. Economy ? A: Excessive immigration hurts our economy because immigrants are taking our jobs, especially from our teenagers. However, some immigration is beneficial to our economy because many immigrants are willing to take some of the lower paying jobs that Americans don’t want. America is a nation of immigrants. Without them, America wouldn’t have the population that it has today.

My Position on Leading Issues Question # 3 Q: Should immigrants have to assimilate into the our culture? A: Yes, if immigrants are going to be here, they need to abide by our rules, speak our language, and they need to follow our systems. They don’t need to throw away their traditions as long as they realize that they are in America now.

My Position on Leading Issues Question # 4 Q: If you were the authority on immigration, would you allow immigrants to move across borders unrestricted? Why or why not? A: Definitely not. There needs to be a screening process. We need to know who is crossing our borders and their reasons of why they are coming over.
