- DNS filtering is going to be a key cornerstone of world cyber security. The Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ) and the new National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) are scaling up DNS filtering and are going to work with all UK ISP’s on implementing. http://www.scmagazineuk.com/gchq-planning-use-of-dns-filters-to-curb-cyber-attacks/ Key message: DNS filtering is the future
- What’s important about it is that it is NOT a proxy… which are infamously difficult to manage (we know we sell those too), expensive and cause latency. It’s 100% cloud based, so no client installations, it can be rolled out very quickly, easily managed by the user and it scales
- Ok, so it’s a threat.. A very REAL threat as we just saw.. So what SHOULD you be doing about it?? From our perspective there are a number of key things, that if taken care of can and will significantly reduce the security risks that your customers are facing. Threat Vector has changed. While there are may angles of attack, Web more specifically, HTTP is number 1. While an attack can and does happen at any layer, a growing number of attacks and the majority that are aimed at end users happens via the Http layer. For example.. A link in an email… a web site, a downloadable game etc. Users spend a lot of time using HTTP and that’s attracted a lot, if not the majority of cyber criminals as the hook with which to snare users. So what we say, is AS A PART of your overall security approach, nail down HTTP(s) and take a very significant step to mitigate the risk that your users are exposed to. So when I talk about Security, I’m actually talking about security at the HTTP(S) level. THAT justifies the need for content filtering.
- What do we mean when we say ‘malicious site’? We’re talking about phishing, rogue software (malware), virus, ransomware etc. 60,000 malicious sites per day/4 new ones per second/3 per employee per day Stop and think about that. EVERY employee comes across THREE malicious sites EVERY day. 100 employees = exposure to 1500 per working week. AND this problem is growing So you need to block these sites and you need ‘Zero day updates’ to protect your customers as they arise.
- So why even let users go to sites that are compromised or categorised as dangerous? Not so much Content Control as much as blocking the sources of these threats. Filtering the content has security/productivity AND compliance implications
- The sledge hammer doesn’t work… whitelists, blacklists etc. Not all people or locations need to be controlled in the same fashion For example, office users vs night time staff etc The office network vs the wifi network Compliance is different from one industry to the next Different considerations for different environments so you need to have flexible policies - There are ALWAYS exceptions so a rigid approach for a wide range of customers will just not work.
- BYOD is an important consideration if you are allowing people to access your network (HUGE for education) You are obliged to have protective measures in place and this is a very different environment to your traditional office network
