19. Development of Modern Paediatrics
The term тАЬpediatricsтАЭ is derived from the two Greek words, pais meaning child and iatros meaning
doctor and healer. As such it is intended to mean the healer of children.
1. We can't find a systemic division of paediatrics for clinical purpose in modern science in the initial
period as in Ayurveda.
2. Father of modern system "Hippocrates" had been greatly influenced by Ayurvedic principles as
evident in history.
3. Hippocrates says, there is great difference in pathology and physiology of child compared to adult.
4. In 1553 a book in english was published by name "Book of Children" (Thomas Fries).
5. John and George Armstrong in 1769 opened a hospital for infants.
6. 1892 Pissee Budin opened a hospital called тАЬconsuttants des nourrissonтАЩsтАЭ.
7. Dr. Balantyne opened an antenatal clinic.
20. 8. 'Psychic disturbances of children was the first written book by Hermann Emminghaus in1887.
9. 20% century, there were great advancements in child care and neonatal care, with invention of
newer techniques like Vaccination (By louis pasteur, Ejenner, etc).

15. During the last few decades, modern paediatrics achieved a very high place due to its success
rate in the field of neonatology and paediatrics by bringing down mortality and morbidity rate
with the help of advanced technology.
