Overview
• Your engineer leadership
team is your competitive
advantage.
• I began my career as an
engineer
• now I am in the people
business.
• The general population typically
perceives our engineer brethren
as
• NOT being in the people business,
NOT being great leaders of people.

Through their critical thinking, obsession for details, natural
curiosity and passion for problem solving Engineers just make
things better.
• While these worklife strengths
are often conducted as a
solitary endeavor
• engineer leaders need to lead
many other engineers and non-
technical personnel in pursuit of
solutions.

Engineers often monopolize certain challenging personality
traits
• and workplace behaviors that
can make their evolution from
a
• solitary operator to
• motivational or
influential leader
• quiet difficult.

Engineers’ challenging personality traits can be
overcome…
• Consciously developing a
deeper degree of self-
awareness,
• Consciously developing a
deliberate awareness of
others, and
• Purposely developing a
deeper understanding of
organizational behavior and
the interplay of self and
others within organizations.

#1. Consciously Develop Your Self-Awareness.
• Self-awareness
involves an ability to
identify your strengths
and areas for growth
and improvement.

Being self-aware includes consciously noticing what you
do and how others respond to you…

Noticing is a form of self-monitoring…

Although initially difficult, request and listen to feedback
from others…

Think critically about the feedback, then use it
constructively to address worklife behaviors…

#2. Consciously Develop An Awareness Of Others.
•Awareness of
others involves an
ability to consider
the needs and
motivations of
individuals and
groups.

Being aware of others includes consciously noticing what
they do and how you and others respond to them…

Because we don’t usually notice the cultural content in
our own behaviors…
• it’s easy to become annoyed
with the behaviors of others that
seem very different from what
we perceive as natural and
normal.

Awareness of this phenomenon gives us a basis for
responding to differences in others in a rational way…

To achieve this perspective, you need to focus on the
underlying logic that shapes the attitudes and behavior of
others.
• Through purposeful
listening and
observing, with the
intention to identify
the underlying logic
that shapes the
attitudes and
behavior of others.

When others’ logic becomes observable…
• it can help explain
many aspects of
their behavior that
may be confusing,
annoying or
contrary to your
leadership
expectations.

One of the easiest way to improve awareness of others..
• to observe oneself
carefully (self-
awareness as
described above) and
then reflect upon the
differences and
similarities in others.

With careful observation of the patterns of behavior in
both oneself and others…
• you can learn to see
things more easily from
the perspective of others
and respond to behaviors
that seem different or
even annoying in a calm
and rational way.

#3. Purposely Develop An Understanding Of The
Interplay Of Self And Others Within Organizations.
• Workplace organizations
are living breathing entities
with their own rhythms and
logic.

Diverse behaviors and cultures occur within
organizations and …
•it’s easy to become
annoyed with the
behaviors among and
between workgroups
and micro cultures
•that seem very different
from what we perceive
as natural and normal.

Awareness of organizational micro cultures gives us a
basis …
• responding to
differences among and
between work units in a
rational way
• and allows us to modify
our own behavior to
meet the leadership
needs of different
groups.

When other groups and work units’ logic becomes
observable…
• it can help explain
many aspects of
their behavior that
may be confusing,
annoying or
contrary to your
leadership
expectations.

Understanding the micro-cultures created within
organizations is a key tool in good leadership…
• and it requires effort,
• particularly when it
comes to
•at recognizing
the assumptions
and values
• that motivate the
group.

Workgroup conflict is usually a product of the inability to
not only recognize the ways culture shapes the actions of
others, but also our own ideas, attitudes, and actions.

Great leaders understand that workgroups are living breathing
organisms that require understanding and nurturing at the
individual and group level.
