an offer. Dr. M L Saraf is one person who
had the guts and determination to refuse
offers to practice in the UK.

3. M L Saraf had just won the Norman
Roberts Prize for his thesis on the subject
of pediatric orthopedics. No other Indian
had won this prize before him. This
prompted many people to advise him to
stay back in the UK and have a lucrative
practice.

4. He rejected every such offer because he
had a dream in his mind to serve the
millions of languishing Indians in his home
country. This is patriotism at its best.

5. M L Saraf returned to India and joined his
alma mater KEM Hospital to work as a
resident doctor. He had seen the troubles
people face when he was an intern at the
same hospital. He had already made up
his mind to ease their troubles. This is the
noble side of M L Saraf.

6. He undertook a mission to cure the poor
people of their orthopedic problems by
venturing to go to their villages and offering
free treatment. Many of his rich friends
joined him and together they did a great
job of serving the poor and the
downtrodden villagers.

record of never having stood second in any
competitive examination in life. In fact, he
always used to top the examinations. Very
few people in the world can boast of such
an impeccable academic record.

8. The Government of India honored his
services by entrusting him with some of the
most prestigious assignments. They had
great faith in him as an extremely efficient
orthopedic surgeon.

9. Many foreign dignitaries come to India for
medical treatment because India has some
great medical facilities. They have some of
the greatest doctors as well such as Dr. M
L Saraf. Indians have done some great
pioneering work in knee replacement
surgery.

10. The Government of India chose him for
heading the medical team that operated on
luminaries such as Hamid Karzai and
Manmohan Singh. He has also assisted Dr.
Ranawat during the knee replacement
surgery of former Indian Prime Minister
Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

11. Maybe, his greatest moment came when
he was chosen to lead the medical team
attending to the most powerful man in the
world at that time, the US President Bill
Clinton. That is a great honor reserved for
very few people in the world.

12. He has won many other accolades as well
having been nominated on the educational
boards of many medical colleges in India.
He has a sporting connection as well when
the Board of Control for Cricket in India
chose him to be an honorary medical
advisor. This game invites a lot of
orthopedic injuries and he did his best to
treat some of the best cricketers India has
