  2. 2. DEFINITION • Myopia is the condition in which parallel light rays from infinity, as they refract on cornea and lens, converge at a focus in front of the retina either because the refracting power of the eye is too great (index myopia) or the anteroposterior diameter is too long (axial myopia).
  3. 3. CLASSIFICATION Continue 1- Myopia may be classified according to the size of the refractive error; however, there is no universally accepted system. The American Optometric Association (AOA) definitions are: • Low (<–3D) • Moderate (–3 to –6D) • High (>–6D).
  4. 4. 2- Myopia may be physiological or pathological. • Physiological myopia: It is common (20–40% population), is usually <5D, and appears to be associated with increased time spent doing near work (usually reading) through teenage/early adulthood. • Pathological myopia: It is less common (around 2% of the population) and is defined as enlargement of the eyeball with lengthening of the posterior segment. It is usually associated with much higher levels of myopia (>– 6D). CLASSIFICATION
  5. 5. COMPLICATIONS OF PATHOLOGICAL MYOPIA • Choroidal and retinal degeneration • Retinal detachment • Staphyloma • Open-angle glaucoma.
  6. 6. TREATMENT Correction of myopia requires: • The provision of a concave lens external to the eye (either as spectacles or contact lens) • Reduction in the refractive power of the eye itself (refractive surgery) • Myopia progression can be slowed by orthokeratology and multifocal lens designs or pharmacological treatment.
